  3. They've treated Suharto's symptoms - his bleeding, his low hemoglobin levels, his fluid in his lungs.

But yet have they even addressed the REASON why Suharto has such symptoms? He's had such problems for years - it's not unrealistic to expect that he'll have them again if he doesn't stay in the hospital or get a pacemaker.

It's entirely conceivable that he'll be back

  4. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/...y-good--doctors

JAKARTA -- Doctors treating Indonesia's elderly former dictator Suharto said Saturday his condition was "very good" and that he may soon be taken off a ventilator and allowed to return home.

lmao what the hell - have they forgotten precisely the reasons why they admitted Suharto into the hospital in the first place?

EDIT: well apparently they treated those conditions WHILE his organs were barely functional - i suppose it's funny when machines are supporting your body.

but he still needs a pacemaker upgrade. and his kidneys - are they improving at all?

  5. Doctor: Suharto Could Recover

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Former Indonesian dictator Suharto's condition has improved and he has a good chance of recovering, his doctor said Saturday.

"We're optimistic," presidential doctor Marjo Subiandono told reporters during a briefing Saturday.

The 86-year-old has been in the hospital for more than two weeks, suffering from multiple organ failure, pneumonia and sepsis, a potentially lethal blood infection. He received dialysis for failing kidneys and a blood transfusion. Doctors said privately he had been near death.

The former leader is still attached to a ventilator, but his heart and lung capacity have improved, and his sepsis is also receding, Subiandono said.

"Most of his sepsis symptoms have gone," said hematologist Harryanto Reksodiputro.

His white blood cell count is still high, Reksodiputro said.

Suharto is conscious and able to respond to his doctors, said Dr. Christian Johannes, another member of Suharto's medical team.

Doctors will continue their efforts to reduce Suharto's need for a ventilator.

If Suharto continues to improve over the next 24 hours, it is possible he will no longer be in critical condition, Subiandono said.

Suharto ruled Indonesia with an iron hand for 32 years and has been accused of hundreds of thousands of murders and disappearances across the vast island nation.

    holy sh*t.............

I have never seen another case in which the media seemed so certain that the person was so close to death, and yet he was able to recover.

    this might be a first...

  8. Doctors said they had contained a severe blood infection, and that he was now able to breath unassisted, according to The Associated Press.

aka there are no (immediate) threats to his life anymore.

the news reports don't even say whether he's been "cured" of something or not. we're all left in the dark. What the hell happened to all his past conditions? it seems like they've all disappeared. the news treat him as better off than he was PRIOR to suffering multiple organ failure now (he was described as with "little hope" PRIOR to multiple organ failure).

and there has been no explicit mention of him not being "very critical" anymore

lmao i am laughing so hard at this

  9. "Tonight, the conditions are safe, there is an improvement in his blood pressure... The indicators show a lower infection (level)," he added.

    hahahahaha

    the trend continues

and wtf happened to suharto's pneumonia? and wtf happened to "very critical" condition? or to "suharto has little hope"?

  10. meh, for the last few days, whenever I pick up the first traces of reluctant consciousness upon waking up, I am reluctant to get up and to check the updated news on Suharto (especially on Monday morning)

though i'm a US West coaster, so I actually get the update on him late in the night. All I know is that he's not dead, so long as the news isn't updated in the 24 hr interim

and I'm worried about the possibility of antibiotic resistance since antibiotics have been applied to him for quite some time now.

already "suharto" has catapulted into 2nd place among my "most frequently googled items" and "Suharto" as catapulted into 6th place

  11. Suharto's condition took another grave turn Tuesday, with doctors saying he had developed sepsis, a potentially life-threatening blood infection, on top of multiple organ failure. He remained hooked to a ventilator and has slipped in and out of consciousness in recent days.

"This is a new low point," Dr. Harryanto Reksodiputro told reporters camped out at Pertamina Hospital. "Suharto's condition is very bad, considering his old age, his previous strokes and poorly functioning kidneys, heart and lungs."

  12. Suharto is a lot like the pope - you can't trace either of their conditions to the top leading causes of death (aka related to artery clotting or cancer) - they just die by becoming really really weak

  13. thursday: suharto improves slightly

friday: suharto suffers multiple organ failure

    saturday: suharto improves slightly

    sunday: suharto very critical

    monday: suharto improves slightly

tuesday: suharto develops sepsis and irregular heartbeat

    and as a comparison...

April 1, 2005 -- The pope is reportedly suffering from a serious bloodstream infection called sepsis.

The Vatican says the pope is in "very serious condition" but is "lucid and fully conscious." Due to the seriousness of his condition, the Vatican reported that last rites -- a Catholic sacrament -- were performed on the pontiff last night. The sacrament is given to people who are seriously ill as well as to those who are near death.

Thursday, the Vatican reported the pope had very low blood pressure and went into septic shock. Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls says the pope's blood pressure is still "unstable."

Septic shock occurs when blood pressure drops severely. With this condition the body's organs, including the kidneys, liver, lungs, and brain, don't get enough blood supply. This can cause them to not function properly.

    sepsis:

There were 2,070 visits in the derivation set, with 110 deaths (5.3%), and 1,109 visits in the validation set, with 63 deaths (5.7%). Independent multivariate predictors of death were terminal illness (odds ratio, 6.1; 95% confidence interval, 3.6-10.2), tachypnea or hypoxia (2.7, 1.6-4.3), septic shock (2.7, 1.2-5.7), platelet count <150,000 (2.5, 1.5-4.3), band proportion >5% (2.3, 1.5-3.5), age >65 (2.2, 1.3-3.6), lower respiratory infection (1.9, 1.2-3.0), nursing home residence (1.9, 1.2-3.0), and altered mental status (1.6, 1.0-2.6). The clinical prediction rule stratified patients into mortality risk groups of very low, 0.9% (95% confidence interval, 0.2-1.5%); low, 2.0% (0.8-3.2%); moderate, 7.8% (5.6-10%); high, 20% (13-27%); and very high, 50% (36.1-64%) in the derivation set. Mortality rates for the corresponding risk groups in the validation set were 1.1%, 4.4%, 9.3%, 16%, and 39%, respectively. The receiver operating characteristic area for the rule was 0.82 in the derivation set and 0.78 in the validation set. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with suspected infection, this model identifies significant correlates of death and allows stratification of patients according to mortality risk. As new therapies become available for patients with sepsis syndromes, the ability to predict mortality risk may be helpful in triage and treatment decisions.

    improves (slightly)

    we're seeing a pattern

    thursday: suharto improves slightly

friday: suharto suffers multiple organ failure

    saturday: suharto improves slightly

    sunday: suharto very critical

    monday: suharto improves slightly (again)

i kept on googling suharto today (hah, I was sick today, and my temperature was unstable for a while). I felt that he wasn't dead since that would otherwise be reported in the media. (his health updates come every 24 hrs)

  15. ironically just 2 hours ago or so i was trying to google up both pinochet and lady bird johnson, who both seemingly improved before dying.

i think "50-50" is overly optimistic at this point (especially considering that we know very little about the physiology of eldery patients - we still can't even make semi-accurate prognoses). i find it ironic that they "just" discovered an obstruction in his airway. suharto is unfortunate for having so many ailments waiting to be discovered before they actually are.

Asked about the patient's chances of survival, he said: "It is 50-50. We may pray that God fulfills (our wishes) and cures H.M. Suharto."

"We have twice already gathered the family and told them of the worst possibilities. They left it entirely to us and to the Almighty," he added.

suharto's heart briefly stopped a few days ago. and now it's even weaker.

  16. Suharto "very critical"

Jan. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Former Indonesian President Suharto, who ruled the Southeast Asian nation for 32 years, is in very critical condition as his health deteriorates, said Mardjo Soebiandono, head of Suharto's medical team.

The 86-year-old was put on respiratory support on Jan. 11 after vital organs stopped functioning. Suharto's condition has been fluctuating since he was admitted to Jakarta's Pertamina Hospital on Jan. 4.

``Chances of his survival are fifty-fifty,'' Soebiandono, said today at a briefing in Jakarta. ``He has been in very critical condition since 8 a.m.,'' local time. Only Suharto's brain and digestive system are functioning normally, he said.

and i thought they were less than fifty-fifty even before this.

  17. Suharto stable:

    http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5ihun7i...7px1EQ4xjLkbH7A

Ari Haryanto Reksodiputro, another doctor on the team, told ElShinta radio that Suharto's blood pressure was stable and his haemoglobin count -- which needs to improve before doctors can operate to install a new pacemaker, seen key to a recovery -- had been rising.

"This shows that we have been able to extract quite a lot of fluid... What is certain is that (the situation) is better than previously," he said, adding however that overall Suharto's condition was not much changed from Saturday.

"The aim is to gradually reduce the use of the breathing aid apparatus," he said, noting that it was inserted through his throat and he was being kept sedated so he was not uncomfortable.

  18. lol

Aids said privately that Suharto appeared to be on the verge of death late Friday, and Health Minister Supari said he should be allowed to die in peace.

Family members, however, decided to have him placed on the ventilator.

  19. hm

He said Suharto, 86, had suffered 'multiple organ failure of the heart, kidney, lung, and brain.'

    http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/...61103083803.htm

    http://sunzi1.lib.hku.hk/hkjo/view/42/4200162.pdf

renal failure + 4 failed organs = Suharto has no chance, period. (according to research above), although maybe if 100,000 people had it, there could potentially be a very small # of survivors

    For example,

a 65-year-old man with coronary heart disease and

    chronic bronchitis developed haemorrhagic shock,

acute renal failure, stress gastrointestinal bleeding,

    pulmonary infection and respiratory failure,

acute left ventricular failure, hepatic failure, and

    disseminated intravascular coagulation after resection

of giant cell carcinoma and was successfully

resuscitated. This suggested that even in elderly

patients with failure of 4 or more organs, resuscitation

is likely to be successful if systemic evaluation

of various organ function have been carried

out to predict the probability of the onset of organ

failure, the rescue techniques of medical staff and

facilities are well trained and prepared, and multiple

resuscitative measures are provided timely and

effectively. Another point is that although less frequent

than heart and pulmonary failure, renal failure

carried great prognostic significance to the patient.

In our patients, 420 of 464 cases (90.5%) with

renal failure died. When renal failure occurred in

the presence of failure of 4 or more organs, the

mortality was as high as 97.3 to 100% (Table 6).

This is probably attributed to the fact that age-related

decline in renal function is often clinically

insidious, and low renal perfusion due to any precipitating

factor is apt to induce renal failure and

    terminate in MOFE.

  20. Critical and unstable condition and worsens.

    then worsens again

i wonder how many possible conditions the label "critical" can really contain

"We are closely monitoring for a possible infection because there are preliminary signs of inflammation" in Suharto's lungs, Hadiarto Mangunnegoro, a lung specialist, told a news conference earlier in the day.

"We have given him treatment to prevent that, including giving him antibiotics and anti-inflammation medicine. Hopefully it will not happen. If it does, it will make things worse."

and he STILL could get worse and not yet die

He says the former general's brain and other organs failed as his blood pressure fell and he had trouble breathing.

"He is still in an unstable condition," he said.

Dr Munawar saya he cannot say how long Suharto can be kept alive.

    his brain failed? >.<

    ==

suharto wasn't on my DDP for some reason since i was retarded when i added names on there early december and then i became too lazy to change.
