I've found the reverse (so far). I seem to be surrounded by death this last year. One of my boyfriends' best mates was shot dead very publically last summer. My cat fell unexpectedly ill between Xmas and New Year, and died 10 minutes into New Years (we took the call from the vet with Auld Lang Syne still being played on the telly). And now I am about to go and visit my father who was diagnosed with liver cancer back in January. He had some chemo but the quackage tell him that the tumour is getting bigger, so they are taking him off the chemo as he is 74 and too frail to take it. So I am flying home to NZ this Sunday to spend time with him before he dies - I have no idea when that will be, no idea when I will return to my family in London. I started lurking on DL somewhere in the middle of all that lot: it seems to me that the contemplation of other people's potential demises is a helpful diversionary tactic from feeling one's own grief too deeply. So I reckon this will be one of the several places I will take refuge from the onslaught of waiting to see how my dad gets on (or not). I like Deathlist: I like its irreverence; the academicness (is that a word? it should be!) of the amazing research you lot of mad geeks actually DO into your unseemly passion; the acceptance that hijacking of threads into random other subjects will make no difference to the end product; and the attention to detail ... even the "heckling" of the Guests. Ah life/death/taxes/everything in between

I really hate having to make my first post a really blonde one. Been lurking here for a few months now, flicking through posts and seeing if I like you enough to actually register ... ... but I've still not been able to figure out what the MU (/u) symbol means in the Deathlist I'm sure you are all sick to the gills of telling every dense newbie, but I can't figure it out, and I can't even find a FAQs thingie. I read (most of) the "instructional" sorta posts, but I still can't find any explanation of it.

Did his trip go ahead, then? At one point a few months ago, I read that his trip was going to be cancelled BECAUSE of the Olympic Flame Up Everest thing ... the Chinese ordered loads of trips up there cancelled, so that they could take it up there. I remember reading that Fiennes was one of them, due to his ascent being very close to flame-takeage time. And it got to the top a couple of days ago, actually. Personally I think Fiennes will last for ages, one of those annoying old men who live forever and (in his case) pester you to do the typing when they need to text someone. -

Sounds like your bedroom could do with some extra mirrors, sunshine. The messrs hellkat were quite pleased to discover my innocently efficacious placement of a seemingly-bland mirror in my bedroom wall-unit. -
Do we bet? Or what ... I've REALLY tried to do my homework before I registered here, but its all so INTERESTING ... one keeps getting sidetracked with amusing and interesting diversions, so I still haven't read all the "how it works" threads. *hides*

*looks annoyed* Sod it ... Just as I am about to leave the country for 2 months, I discover you might be planning a piss up. Ah well, the perils of being a Jenny-come-lately. I'm rubbish at turning up to planned events, or at least, I'm rubbish at committing to them. I occasionally turn up if I know the venue, and then people are so surprised I turned up, they forget who I am by the time I turn up at the next one

Woe, schmoe ... Never give up hope, Mrs ... for that's when they seem to be able to smell that you are desparate, and treat you accordingly. (or at least, thats my experience: look desparate=pull a W**ker/look confident and independent=pull a lesser W**ker) There's always another one round the corner ... when you least expect them to turn up, that's when they do (and why I'm currently stressed out about two of the buggers falling about all over me, instead of just one). And believe me ... I'm no oil painting (must be me brains, then, or me blowjob technique, can't seem to get properly shot of either one of them *sigh*). So clearly they are both of the "not right in the head" variety. -

Indeed you are not, madam. There is always room for further research on topics of possible relevance. How do you think scientists manage to get away with wheedling huge grants out of corporations, other than by dreaming up some sort of inane research to fund their academic dossing-about. Me neither, till this one loomed handsomely onto the horizon, scared the sh*t out of me, and cut out all my natural light Changed my mind regarding tall people, though. Previous to him, I'd really only fancied that most delectable of All Blacks*: Jonah Lomu, who I have since discovered is of remarkably similar build to my No. 1 Chaperone. The actual mr hellkat is an averagely heighted 5'9", but he IS ginger, so no doubt his death index ratio (is there such a thing?) is probably skewed by that fact. *tragically for you lot, I am a very patriotic Kiwi - albeit mostly based in London ... and what is worse, I am about to head off home for several months, so I shall be pestering you from the underbelly of the world shortly. -

There COULD be something in that. Several lankypeeps of my acquaintence are, in fact, complete knob-heads. Frustratingly, in attempting to tell them so, one often feels like a fox terrier snapping at ankles. I so hate having to shout up at people. Finger-pointing rage is not nearly as effective when you have to point in a northerly direction. Mind you, many MANY short-arses are too, come to think of, and much more easy to harangue eyeball to eyeball. -

I've not noticed a problem in that department -

Where are you finding this interesting information regarding the relative health risks of tall people? Only: one of my blokes is 6'6 (hardly a giant, compared to Leonidko, but quite enough hugeness for me to cope with all at one time ) I'd be really interested to see what he might die of (for purely medicinal purposes, of course ... ) I already have to factor gunshots, knife wounds, runnings-over, and bombings into the equation, so it would be interesting to see what are the actual health risks of being tall. (apart from always banging your head on doorways, and getting a hunch back from having to bend down over a foot to kiss your short fat girlfriend) -
Ah, thank you CarolAnn ... that makes perfect sense now. I couldn't see how they would get straight in to No. 1 with (pardon me) a bullet LOL

Personally I woulda put a Snickers on his head instead of a bounty. He should be meeting our friend "PAINNNNNNN" for what he did.

I'd like to apply for the Terrible Parent Abroad Trophy, if possible. I admit it: only just this weekend, I left my daughter* sleeping alone for several hours in a hotel in Pescara on Monday morning, whilst I scarpered off with a jaunty Italian gentleman for several hours. *(although it has to be said, she is 20, and she was sleeping off a serious hangover) We did return in time for lunch, during which time I plied her with stodgy food to cure the hangover. Do I get a prize?

Don't worry, you won't sound bumpkiny around me. I'm an expert at appearing to sound brainy online, but in fact am quite bimbo-ish at times. Writingly, I am verbose. Verbally (i.e., when talking not writing) I'm a nightmare. Octopus, prolly you can see a star if you have a Mac, but I am still labouring along with one of the Microsoft Management Staff Pension Fund PC's, kindly cobbled together by a techy friend, in fact, I don't think their pension fund has benefitted from my use of this particular version of Windows, but let's not tell Mr Gates that. And yes, thank you Sir Blowjob, I did see my feet only just yesterday, when the ghastly man at the airport made me take off my boots to go through security. Note to self: when travelling by air, wear trainers like everybody else. Fashion and over-anxious airport staff do not mix. I'm looking forward to flitting through here from time to time, you all seem jolly ROBUST types with the correct ratios of warped sense of humour to enable me to fit in. I like the look of your "rant calculations" or whatever it is

Oh, right, so like ... its the first time they've appeared on the list (and they jump to number 1 straight off the bat) ?
-
Yeah, they do, as it goes. Its a bugger being able to speak in words of more than one syllable. Mostly its either because: (1) I use big words; or (2) I am stoned; or (3) I am stoned and am rambling on using big words

Okay ... I can see you are not of a scientific mindset. On the deathlist itself, there is, like a little red symbol, its known in scientific circles as "mu" (I think its a greek symbol, and its used for millilitres, in medical science) It seems to only be on the number-1 listings. Obviously it has some relevance. Let me see if I can cut and paste it. "2 1ยต Sydney Pollack 74 25 posts Actor" That little red dude, next to the "1" Don't worry about me bein' a bird and attracting all the flies like a 12 day corpse: I'm old and fat and a scary biker bird ( ) ... I just put that pic of me boobs up there so you would pay attention. I'll change it back to me normal avatar soon.
