Still alive and still rabble rousing. I'm not really for anarchy, but do subscribe to lots of lefty email newsletters and Martin Wright's name popped up in the last missive I received, with him making some quite pertinent points about the Brexit. I find it hard to argue with much of this, tbh Right on!

Can't disagree with you at all, Iceland fully deserved the win. On the final point, at least we reach the tournaments to fail miserably. There are kids north of the border now reaching adulthood who weren't born the last time the Tartan Army reached a major tournament. I mean, at least you used to qualify, then go out in the group stage. Now you don't even do that. Quarter Finals start tonight, thought we might start having a few (ill advised) predictions: Poland-Portugal: Portugal to score a last minute/extra time winner, just as in the Last 16, 0-1. Wales-Belgium: Much as a I fear a Wales win, I'll say 1-2 Belgium. Germany-Italy: Toss-up. Could be a cracking match. Italy, because they've never lost to Germany in a major tournament. (True dat) France-Iceland: France finally find their form and Iceland's fairytale ends to a competent opposition, 2-0. Of course, I tipped a Croatia-Belgium semi-final, so if I were you I'd be looking at Poland, Wales, Germany and Iceland... They've got a chance now, England are in their qualification group for the World Cup! I'm tempted to put a sneaky fiver on England not qualifying...

I'm more hopeful, now that Boris has dropped out of the race. And it was a big bet. I'd cash out now if I were you. It says a lot about the current state of British politics when May is the least worst option! -
The timing of the Blarite coup is strange considering that there is a ticking timebomb that's just about to explode - the Chilcott inquiry. If that verdict proves a damning to him and his acolytes as is suspected then their credibility will be utterly destroyed. The only solution I can think of is that the Labour Party split into two discreet groupings with the tacit agreement of both sections fighting the GE in the areas of the UK where they can get votes. Left to the North/Scotland and former industrial heartlands with the centrists seeking votes in the south and more "aspirational" areas and position themselves as a more adequate opposition to the Tories than the Lib Dems should they make a comeback... The two sides would then gather at Westminster as a loosely affiliated centre/centre-left "bloc"... Tricky but possibly the only practical opposition to the Tory government should they be returned with a majority.

With the 1922 Committee announcing that a new Tory leader will be in place by September 2nd, that pushes forward the possibility of an early election to October 13th...

Looks like my tip Belgium are looking pretty good...

Fair dos to the French, they improved massively in the second half. Coman made a difference, I thought. All they need to do is tune up on their penalties and they're in the semi-finals..

If Ireland continue to play in they way have so far, they should beat Iceland...

Thing is, the reason Corbyn was nominated in the first place was because they wanted to "widen the debate", so some Labour MPs who would never normally nominate anyone like Corbyn made sure he was on the ticket. They wont make that mistake again... Of course there may not be a Tory leadership contest at all. When IDS was forced out, Howard was proclaimed as the new leader unopposed. The clock's ticking, Europe are demanding that Article 50 declaration asap. It would be more convenient for the government time-wise if Johnson was elected unopposed in July and takes the reigns early so the Brexiteers could begin negotiations earlier.

Portugal just shaded it. Quietly impressive was their DM William Carvalho. Just goes about his business amongst the Ronaldo histrionics. Portugal are well placed now in the "weak" side of the draw. Iceland did them a big favour I reckon. Why oh why didn't Croatia play the impressive Pjaca from the start?

One thing I know about Tory leadership contests is that the favourite rarely wins...
