  1. There was a report on News 24 last night (relayed from ABC in America) about

Astor and how badly she's treated. There should no probs with the obits for her, which

    might come quite soon...

  2. After a rather inert period of suggestions, here are some new ones...

Grahame Crowden (b.1922) - veteran actor

    and two Goods...

I.J 'Jack' Good - Mathematician. Worked at Bletchley Prk in WWII. Probably get an

obit in The Times or Guardian. Born 1916...

Jack Good (b.1931) - TV Producer, actor, now a monk...

  3. Probably not the right to die at the moment for Gerald, with all this stuff

going on in the Middle East.

A nice quiet period news-wise would be just the ticket for him, particularly as

we wasn't president for very long...

Incidentally, who has had the shorter presidency: Kennedy or Ford?

  4. No other bugger's had the good grace to say it, so WELL DONE MADAME!

And please spare our eyes and sanirty... alright, eyes, then.

Thank you , pulphack. And props to you for even jokingly suggesting

that it was Mo. I was convinced that the bow or whatever she has around

her neck was disguising an Adam's apple.

I'm curious to see what TMIB will choose for his next avatar.

    .....which is this!!

(Again, just so as you know....)

  5. it is with the deepeest sadness that I have to announce the death of the director and producer David Maloney. He was most famous for his work on many episodes of Doctor Who , also Blakes Seven, and he brught the brilliant tv series Day of the Triffids to tv

Oh dear. He was a great director - 'The Deadly Assassin' was my favourite (that's the story when he returns to his old planet folks!).

He wasn't that old was he? He must have been ill.. ;)

  6. Whilst I'm still trying to sort out names and also on the back of stinging abuse ;) by CP over the Barnard Hughes atrocity,

    Jack Warden,, actor, is dead.

That's a shame although I thought he was dead anyway.

Anyone seen the film 'Used Cars'? Good film. Warden has 2 roles in it..

  7. The Velvet Underground, sans Nico?

    Give that man a cigar!

Correct. Probably taken late 69/early 70. Mo Tucker's at the front, so its not

a long-haired geezer. Doug Yule 'The Underated One', Sterling Morrison and

    the Louster complete the lineup....

I'm off to find another Avatar which you can guess...

(Just so people know what the hell we're on about here...)

  8. MIB, I might've missed it elsewhere on this site but who is that band on your avatar picture? The guesses at MPFC towers include Thunderclap Newman and The Rasberries.

Wrong. Anyone else for a guess?

  9. Syd Barret has died at 60.He was as you probably know the founder and lead singer of Pink Floyd and an iconic figure in the 60s.

I think I need to steer clear of my record collection, I was listening to his album The Madcap Laughs at the weekend.

Oh well in for a penny, in for a pound *slides out the Max Bygraves record from its sleeve with a sly grin*

    I wonder, I just wonder.....

GET OUT YER BEEFHEARTS, HE'S ON MY LIST....

  10. Very strange.

Last night, while watching Saxondale on TV, I started to strum on my

electric guitar. Towards the end of the jam, I tried out a song on

'The Madcap Laughs' called 'Here I go'. I hadn't played the guitar in months.....

Staying on the Barrett theme, I played a few tracks from his 'Barrett' album

whilst doing some ironing. I hadn't played that album in months.....

Then today, I was at work and this thought came into my head that someone famous

had died, and I immediately went to the BBC News website. Lo and behold....

The first album I ever bought was 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn'....

When I started playing guitar, I instinctively sought to learn the chords of his songs...

He was one of my heroes

  11. I didn't think that it was that bad a tournament. There were some

    great goals.

The Best World Cup is always the one when you're 6-10 anyway (in my case 1982).

I must admit that 2006 does bear some relation to Italia '90.

They'll have to change the rules a touch. Try and up the pace a bit.

Too many stoppages for non-existant injuries etc, etc.

I think the media are a bit down because England were shite. They all thought

that is was going to be the one. Turned out to be the same as before.

It comes to pass when the Germans are the exciting team....

  12. Another disappointing day of footbal in Germany. Australia have much to complain about the ref, but at least they played a good match. Switzerland v Ukraine was perhaps exciting for the Swiss and Ukrainians, but I fell asleep during the second half.

Ok, back to yesterday. This match showed the weaknesses of the Dutch side: the midfield and lack of experience. In the group stage the Dutch managed to hide those flaws with good results, but Portugal managed to exploit them to the fullest. They must have prepared well, I can't blame them for it.

The Dutch display of assault and battery rather than football, against an opponent well versed in cold & hot war was a huge mistake. During half-time, after the first Portuguese was sent off, Van Basten should have substituted Boulahrouz, who already had a yellow card. He should have instructed his players to ignore Portuguese provocations and time-wasting and get on with the game. As for the 16 yellows and 4 reds: this is another example of poor preparation. It's not the first time Ivanov showered a match with them, they should have known.

The greatest flaw of the Dutch side was lack of a solid midfield. We have some excellent strikers, but they need a steady supply of balls from the midfield, which happened too rarely to make them work.

Of course things could have gone differently. To win a match like this you also need a bit of luck. We obviously hadn't.

All in all I think the Dutch side made a bad impression. I have reasonable hopes for the future when a more experienced Van Basten can sort out the mess and manages to get the best out of the many good players we have.

    regards,

    Hein

It's high time we buried the myth of Dutch football. They were good in the 70s, but now they're just a so-so team of players, who foul and cheat with the best of them.

Its the same with Brazil, all this cooing over them, like they were going to reproduce their 1974 magic, and they clearly wont.

The Dutch are like any other European team...

  13. I think this World Cup has been good so far: the football has been great (esp. Argentina)

and the supporters have been great, including the English. But the media have been apalling,

right through from the tabloids to the broadsheets and television.

There's nothing wrong with supporting your country, with hope as well as expectation. But it's the

snide comments, paricularly from the commentators that has been off-putting.

Take Tyldesley for example. He commentated on the Czech Rep vs Ghana game (great match BTW),

and he was very good: his voice was on a lower register than for England games and imparted the

occasion with a studied impariality (as you would). But when it comes to England games, he chucks

any sense of proportion out of the window and witters on hysterically.

The best TV commentators are Steve Wilson (BBC) and John Champion (ITV) who are both ranked third

in the running by their channels. And don't get me started on the pundits....

  14. It's all starting to dribble away from him. Even the NME have turned their

backs on him. He's a druggie bum, left in the gutter, while that arch parasite

Kate Moss saunters off with a fat new contract and dropped drugs charges....
