I'm not sure if he is famous enough. Does being a Nazi give you instant fame?"as second-in-command of Bordeaux area police" - I don't think that's famous enough but I'll let the experts decide.
Ask Channel 4!

Apparently there were fears of another tremor earlier today. But it turned out to be a false alarm - it was only the rumble of journalists/bloggers rubbing their hands....

No. That's a suprise, all those years in the headlines. But he's still alive so thats good judgement then...

What's the state of health of actor Corin Redgrave? He had a massive heart attack some months back. And wasn't he in line to be the next Rumpole of the Bailey?

themaninblack has many connections: Death, Satan, Johnny Cash and The Stranglers. There was a radio actor in the 1950s who was called 'The Man in Black' as well...

There's a BBC Four profile on cartoonist and creator of St Trinians, Ronald Searle (b.1920). Now a recluse...

November 22nd 1990 was the real big day when she announced her resignation. A day I'll never forget. Funnily enough, my Parents were probably the first in Britian to know this, as they were listening to Irish radio on shortwave when they heard the news. They rushed to the TV, but there was no announcement in Britian untill shortly after.

She'd be hard pused to reach her 81st by the way she's going...

Again a tangent...but is there any truth in the 'Una Stubbs in pre-fame porn flick' rumour I heard from a friend whose dad claimed he saw it?I'd quite like to see that, she was quite a looker in her prime.

Don Arden (b.1926) - leg-breaking Rock manager of Black Sabbath/ELO and father of Sharon Osborne. Not been well, so I've heard...

So who saw the re-run of the BAFTA tribute show tonight then? There were plenty of prospective DL choices there: Warren Mitchell, Eric Sykes, Bill Cotton, Leslie Phillips, Peter Vaughan ... surely one of those gentlemen could oblige next year?Vaughny might, he's the eldest.
Sykes is still in good nick, although he has got round to writing his autobiography, preparing the ground maybe?

I intend to enter DDP in 2006.
Pinters a deffo, but I've looked at noted down other picks for possible entry - there's over 80! Its going to be bloody difficult.

Reading in the Independent an interview with Harold Pinter, who turns 75 at the weekend. The piece described him as frail and walking with the aid of a stick, although he has written a new radio play. Apparently he's been fighting cancer of the oesophagus for three years. That particular cancer is difficult to beat. John Thaw died from it.
A stick on for '06 if he holds out.

Is Tony Blackburn the moderator of this thread?
Oooh you're all cruel

With the death of Ronnie Barker, you have to consider the Rev. Ian Paisley, who seems to be going through the same process of big man to little man.Having seen him on the news, he's looking a lot more chipper, so I take it back!
-
Oh, now then. I think I can vaguely remember that one, can you refresh my memory?Clarence was Ronnie Barker's last sitcom, made in 1988. It was set in the 1930s and centred around the titular short-sited removal man, played by the man himself. All I can say is that it was no wonder that he retired.
'Going Straight' has been repeated on UK Gold. It's not bad, just not as good as Porridge.

Barry Letts (b. 1925) Producer of Doctor Who (1969 - 1974) I say this as the death rate amongst producers/writers of the show is impressive:
John Wiles producer (d. 1999)
Innes Lloyd (producer (d. 1991)
Graham Williams producer (d. 1990)
John Nathan-Turner producer (d. 2002)
Robert Holmes script editor (d. 1986)
David Whitaker script editor (d. 1980)
Terry Nation creator of the Daleks (d. 1997)
Gerry Davis co-creator of the Cybermen/script editor (d. 1992)

Nah! Going Straight was ( I thought ) his worst. You've not seen Clarence then!

And in honour of the late Ronnie Barker:
What is the difference between a malopropism and a spoonerism?
Knuck Fows!

Here's one I've come across - John Freeman (b. 1915) was the the probing interviewer of Face to Face from 1959 - 1962. Famously interviewed Tony Hancock and reduced Fifties TV star Gilbert Harding to tears. He is also one of the last surviving people who were elected in the Labour 1945 landslide (for Labour).
Definitely one to think about putting on the list!

I just heard a classic quote on sky news..."Its a bit like losing Eric Morcambe again"....pass the sic bagShouldn't that be ...pass the sic (sic) bag?

You wouldn't want to go there anyway - there's a war on you know!
The point I was making was that journos seem to rather overplay reports of the bleeding obvious. 'There's a disaster' they cry. Yes, we know! All systems are in place, or at least should be in place, to deal with that kind of disaster. There's no need to labour the point, particularly in view of the Tsunami, which has somewhat raised the bar as far as disasters are concerned. But be it Russian school seiges, Tube bombs, earthquakes or whatever, TV journos report in the same, pompous, emotive, trill way as ever. They might as well report from the scene and play 'Waltzing Matilda' repeatedly with a banjo, for all the difference they make.
This is a consequence of 24-7 news reporting - indifference....
