Shirley Jones is 88 today. After starting out on Broadway, she achieved worldwide fame in musical productions Oklahoma! & Carousel, before becoming the mother of the performing Partridge Family. -

Cricketer Norman Gifford is 82 today. Born in Lanacshire, he was a Worcestershire player for over 20 years, ending his career playing for Warwickshire, retiring in 1988 at the age of 48, with a tally of 2,068 first-class wickets. The winner of one-day games between the two counties is awarded The Norman Gifford Trophy, named in his honour. He won 15 England Test caps between 1964 and 1973, then twelve years later, two ODI caps, making his debut days before his 45th birthday. -
Eighteen years since singer Timi Yuro died aged 63, succumbing to throat cancer.

Everyone's favourite slightly dodgy history teacher & slightly dodgy uncle, Richard Griffiths died 9 years ago today aged 65, as a result of complications following heart surgery. His last film appearance was uncredited in Richard Curtis's "About time", released posthumously.

Humphrey Burton is 91 today (and, astonishingly, doesn't appear to have ever had a mention on these boards previously). He was the BBC first head of Music & Arts before a stint with LWT before returning to the BBC. He was responsible for LWT's Aquarius, which was the forerunner to The South Bank Show, and BBC's Monitor, an early Arts programme. He's won 2 BAFTAs and four Emmies and was knighted in the 2020 New Year's honours. He's also the father of BBC classical presenter Clemency Burton-Hill. -
