Some Vogon poetry for you: Oh saint Patrick he drove out the snakes With his prayers but that’s not all it takes For the snake symbolizes An evil that rises And hides in your heart As it breaks And the evil has risen my friends From the darkness that lives in some men But in sorrow and fear That’s when saints can appear To drive out those old snakes once again And they struggle for us to be free From the psycho in this human family Ireland’s sorrow and pain Is now the Ukraine And saint Patrick’s name now Zelenskyy Did I say Vogon? I meant Bono. This is, by all accounts, what Nancy Pelosi read out at the Friends of Ireland lunch today.

It's 64 years since the death of Dubliner John Pius Boland, at age 87. In 1896, as an academic on a study break in Athens, he was persuaded by a friend to enter the tennis competition in the newly revived Olympic Games; thus he became the first tennis gold-medallist, winning the singles and then the doubles with the German player he beat in the singles event. He's reported to have insisted on the Irish flag being flown instead of the Union flag, though this has since been (reportedly) disproved. He was later an Irish Parliamentary Party MP for South Kerry at Westminster, from 1900 to 1918.
