Syas, a Bengal tiger, reputedly the last tiger working in a UK circus was euthanised yesterday at Wolds wildlife park in Horncastle, Lincs. Made the papers three years ago when he was spotted in a cramped cage near the M6, as part of Chipperfiled's lions & tigers tour, prompting Sir Roger Moore to call for a ban on circuses using animals. Also made the BBC a year later (see picture).

Its 75 years since Scottish athlete Eric Liddell died in an internment camp in Japanese occupied China, aged 43. Born in China to christian missionaries and a devout christian himself, he refused to race on Sundays, and in 1925 returned to China as a missionary. When Allan Wells won the 100m Gold at the 1980 Olympics, he dedicated the victory to Liddell.

The original version of this song was released in the late 60s and failed to chart in the UK or Ireland, though made number 1 elsewhere in Europe. It was covered by one half of a musical duo in the early 90s and reached the top 5 in the UK and top 10 in Ireland. The cover version benefited from an additional verse written by the cover artiste (and an additional definite article in the title).

Well, there's a surprise. I never got as far as the checking out the comedy soundtrack, but the reason the XTC original failed to reach the top 40 in 1991 was that it wasn't released until 1992
