Fifty years ago today shopkeeper Alf Roberts died aged 77. This Alf Roberts was Margaret Thatcher's dad though, not a TV character.

Former world junior welterweight champion (WBA) and would-be 1980 US Olympian Johnny Bumphus has died of cardiac arrest aged 59. He lost the title at his first defence to Gene Hatcher and in his only other title fight, the WBC welterweight title, he was stopped by Lloyd Honeyghan after 2 rounds. He never boxed again, retiring with a 29-2 record.

British playwright & screenwriter Charles Wood has died aged 87. His screenwriting credits include The Knack... and how toget it, The Bed-Sitting Room, and Help!, amongst others, while his TV work includes episodes of Kavanagh QC, Inspector Morse and Sharpe amongst others. His plays included Prisoner and Escort, which was written for TV but was performed on Radio and Stage before TV.

Guitarist/composer/filmmaker Ivan Kral died yesterday aged 71. He worked extensively with Patti Smith, but also with Iggy Pop, Mick Ronson, John Cale amongst others.

This UK top-10 hit was the only real chart success* for this legendary US band, though they fared much better on their side of the water, where it reached number 1, back in the latter half of the 70s. *if real chart success is being defined as reaching the top-40.
