Its 33 years since the death of Ric Grech. Grech found fame with UK rock group Family, joining in 1965, playing bass guitar and violin; he also had songwriting and vocal credits on their second album. HE left in acrimonious circumstances, having agreed to join Blind Faith, but not telling the rest of the band until they were on tour in the US; following Blind Faith, Grech and Steve Winwood joined Ginger Baker in his eponymous Air Force. After two albums, Grech joined Winwood in a re-formed Traffic (also featuring the recently deceased Jim Gordon, with whom Grech co-wrote Rock N Roll Stew). He was sacked from Traffic owing to his use of alcohol and drugs, but continued in session work, attempted to form groups of his own, and released a solo album. He retired from music in 1977. He died of liver failure brought on by alcoholism, aged 44.

A to Clare (C.P.) Grogan, who is 61 today. (She was initially billed as C.P. Grogan owing to there already being a Claire Grogan on Equity's books) As a singer she's best known for fronting Altered Images, who achieved 3 top-10 hits in the '80s, and as an actress, came to prominence in 1981's Gregory's Girl; she was also the first incarnation of Kochanski in TV's Red Dwarf. She makes a cameo appearance in the music video for The Bluebells' Young At Heart.

Sir Roger Norrington, British conductor (of the orchestral variety, rather than buses - that was yesterday) is 89 today. He retired from live conducting in 2021, and conducted his last recorded piece last year, despite being told he was dying from a rare and rapid cancer almost 30 years ago.

Pakistani-British billionaire entrepreneur Anwar Pervez is 88 today. Born in Rawalpindi in what was then British India, he emigrated to the UK in 1956, becoming a bus conductor in Bradford; he opened his first shop, Kashmir, in Earl's Court in 1963, specialising Asian spices and halal meat, and within a decade had expanded to 10 stores, renamed Bestway, with a wholesale warehouse following soon after. He was made an OBE in 1992, and knighted in 1999, and awarded the Hilal-e-Pakistan (The Crescent of Pakistan - the country's second highest civil honour) in 2000.
