Its one year since the untimely death of Shane Warne, aged 52, a few hours after the slightly less untimely death of Rod Marsh aged 74 Marsh had suffered a heart attack while on his way to an event eight days earlier and died in hospital. Warne was on holiday in Koh Samui, and had paid tribute to Marsh on social media before he too had a fatal heart attack.

Its 32 years since the death of Howard Head, aged 76. Head was an aeronatical engineer in his early 30s, working for Glenn L. Martin, when he went skiing for the first time; frustrated with the heavy traditional wooden skis, he decided to look into developing a lighter, easier to handle, ski, and quit his job, living off his earnings from playing poker. Early prototypes were certainly lighter, but broke too easily, but he persisted; By the end of the winter of 1947, he'd developed a pair of skis that were as strong as the wooden ones, but only half the weight. The Head Ski company was founded in 1950, and soon became the leading alpine ski supplier in the US, and diversified to other sports equipment, the most notable being the Arthur Ashe tennis racquet, made from an aluminum (sic) honeycomb. In 1969 Head sold the ciompany and retired. On retirement he decided to take up tennis, which lead him to become majority shareholder and chairman of the board of Prince, the manufacturer of his tennis ball machine. He improved the machine, but that didn't improve his tennis. He determined that the size of the racquet's "sweet-spot" was hindering him, and developed an oversize racquet, which he patented. He also pioneered graphite as a material to replace wood, leading that to become industry standard.

Its 30 years since the death of Hans Hilfiker, aged 91. He was a Swiss engineer and designer, most famous for his design of the Swiss Railway clock for Swiss Federal Railways, (SBB). The original 1944 design had no second hand (as timetables don't list times to the second) but one was added in 1953, in the style of the baton used by despatchers to signal a train to depart.

British comedy actor and writer George Layton is 80 today. After a few minor supporting roles his bigbreak came when he was cast as Doctor Paul Collier in 1969's Doctor in the House, a role he reprised in subsequent 'Doctor' series, '...at Large', '...in Charge' and '...at the Top' (he'd also had small a role in that other 'Doctor' programme, as technician Penn). He also began writing for the 'Doctor...' series and other writing credits included My Brother's Keeper, Nearest & Dearest, Executive Stress and Don't Wait Up. He continued in acting, with a starring role as Bombardier Solly Solomons, in It Ain't Half Hot, Mum. before leaving at the end of the second season. He had two guest appearances in The Sweeney and a recurring role in Minder (which he says he lost because he took a break to appear in panto), and was one of the original hosts of That's Life. Other works include voiceover & narration for cartoons, TV commercials (Sydney of The Tetley Tea-folk) stage acting & directing and author of childrens books. Another It Ain't Half Hot Mum alumnus, Stuart McGugan, is exactly one year younger. IAHHM was his big break, playing concert-party strongman Gunner 'Atlas' Mackintosh - made to appear bigger by positioning him in close proximity to Don Estelle and Melvyn Hayes. Alongside his IAHHM appearances he was also a presenter on children's TV series Play School, from which he was nearly fired for drop-kicking Humpty over the set. Another major role was as Bomba MacAteer in the drama Tutti Frutti (alongside Robbie Coltrane & Emma Thompson) and then a regular role alongside Robert Carlyle in Hamish Macbeth. -
Looking forward to this now.

No, that would be 99 Luftballons.

As Wikipedia might say, "citation needed". I'd be interested in seeing some numbers.

Its 32 years since the death of Artie Mitchell, of the Mitchell Brothers (not those Mitchell brothers), noted pornographers of San Francisco and environs. The brothers opened San Francisco's O'Farrell Theatre in 1969, (appropriately enough for an 'adult' cinema) facing immediate opposition from neighbours and the authorities - a situation they would find themselves in repeatedly over the years (they faced over 200 prosecutions on obscenity charges, each being imprisoned over 180 times). As film-makers their most famous work was Behind The Green Door, which cost $60,000 to make and grossed over $25million. (The sequel, made in 1985, was less successful, and has been called one of the worst porn pictures ever made. It was the world's first 'safe sex' film, with the male actors wearing condoms). By 1991, Artie was drinking heavily and friends and associates implored Jim to 'do something'. Jim visited Artie with a rifle, intending, he said, to scare him. Artie was hit 3 times, out of 7 shots fired, one hitting him in the right eye, killing him. He was 45. Jim was sentenced to 6 years (serving 3) for manslaughter.

Its 31 years since the death of Jean Yawkey. A one-time fashion model, she assumed ownership of the Boston Red Sox on the death of her husband Tom Yawkey, in 1976. She was also the first woman board-member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, on her election in 1983. During her ownership, the Sox reached the World Series Final of 1986, losing in seven games to the NY Mets chiefly remembered for the sixth game when a ground ball eluded first-baseman Bill Bucknor, with the Sox within touching distance of victory. On her death, after a stroke at age 83, control passed to the Yawkey Trust, who sold to New England Sports Ventures, now Fenway Sports Group, in 2002.

I voted 60s but not fussed if it’s 90s. My interest in Eurovision spans late-60s to mid-90s with a huge gap in the 80s, so this KoS would be my least-best option.
