  1. Why do Americans always sue for such ridiculous sums?

Good question Cerby. They sue for ridiculous sums because US juries are often gullible enough to award outrageous settlements based on the unfortunate concept of "sending a message". This is to encourage the defendant and others in a similar position to refrain from engaging in whatever conduct led to the lawsuit. A good example is the $8 million award to the woman who put a cup of McDonald's coffee between her knees while leaving the drive thru window, then shock of shocks spilled it and burned her legs. Her lawyers made the case that McDonald's served their coffee too hot, so their client's dumb behavior shouldn't preclude a massive payout. The jury sees a little old lady with burned legs up against a greedy corporate client, and hey presto, 8 mill. What's not often mentioned about that case is that on appeal the amount was significantly reduced as it was dealt with by a judge. And McDonald's does now serve their coffee at a cooler temperature.

I think they now also include a warning message on the cups that says

'Danger - contents may be hot' :)

  2. Link here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/t...dio/4176910.stm

Wouldn't fancy his chances  if he's found guilty, these celebs don't do well on prison food.

No, but they always seem to get a book out of it.

Next up Jonathan King's ' Banged up for Buggering Boys '

    Allegedly....

Always best to adopt the 'Have I Got News For You' approach to forestall possible libel actions

Not that I think his appeal will succeed, but you can never tell. I'm sure some ex-public school judges reckon buggery of young boys perfectly normal behaviour

  3. I was mighty surprised reading the Courtney-Coogan story this morning - I would have put that down on my "things least likely to happen this year" list...just below Pete Doherty getting it on with a supermodel

too bad, surely Hollywood's due for a 21st century version of The Partridge Family

More like the Addam's family

  4. I believe HCW was added to the Mods team as an afterthought in an attempt to give it some sex appeal, but going by her avatar, she's a bit of a boiler if you ask me.

What a thing to say - HCW an afterthough.

I'd have you know that raising HCW to the hallowed rank of Moderator was carefully planned - although not so much trying to address the gender imbalance, more making sure we had someone to make the sandwiches and clean up after our regular team meetings. ;)

  5. What on earth is this about banning people from Malta ? Do not be so racist please. I think that certain members on this forum, particularly "Windsor", should be banned as they contribute very little.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to be racist. Just I didn't know that Maltesers were a race, as opposed to just the inhabitants of an insignificant island. Just as well I didn't differentiate between white chocote and dark chocolate Maltesers!

  6. Alas, your vote was indeed wasted on me. I will live for many years, my friends, and laugh in the pig English faces...........I will trample on Peter Shilton`s grave just as I punched a ball over his head.......mark my words English pigs.........

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

PS - I'm not English. Nice goal though

  7. A definite for next year if she doesn't go too soon I'd say. She's in a different league to the widow of the honourable Elijah Muhammad. Coretta King was hands on with a lot of human rights work and played a prominent role well after her husband's death. She was a force behind the scenes when he was alive. Definitely in the Hilary Clinton, Cherie Booth mould of partner. In fact it would be a bit of an insult to write her off just because of who she was married to.

And we all know that Martin was very hands on....

  8. Speaking of money, Lord Callaghan's estate is estimated to be worth of over One point nine million pounds according to his will.

And like any true socialist he will have left all his wealth to the people.

By my calculations (based upon a population of around 55 million in the UK), that makes it 3.5pence each. Don't spend it all in the one shop

  9. I believe Coretta Scott King will die before Rosa Parks does.

I think just a little bit different. I have my fingers crossed that

Rosa is the bus drivers first stop.

But will she remember to get off???

  10. Uki, if you're into collecting Tyson fights the best thing to do is find out where he's staying and hang around. The man is so volatile some full-on action seems to kick off wherever he is these days and the ringside seats are free.

But remember to wear some ear protectors...

  11. Does it constitute an arrestable offonce??

As in: you got off once, but this time you're nicked?

    regards,

    Hein

    Grrr....

That's the worst thing about posting on a Friday night after hitting the pub. Spelling goes to hell.

And anyone who says the quality improves gets banned!!!

  12. I can't find a decent one - thats why I keep changing.

But TF does tamper with his avatar quite abit more than me.

I get the feeling he tampers with many things quite a lot more than you, Windsor. But it is not something he likes to advertise :referee:
