There are only 12 coins. One of them is either heavier or lighter. If you weigh six against six, you still have no idea which is the dud so you have used one of your weighings and discovered nothing. My understanding of a counterweight is not the scale itself but a weight used to counterbalance. "You are given eleven identical coins of equal mass and one counterfeit coin which is either heavier or lighter than the other eleven. Your are also given a counter balance which you can use just three times to determine the counterfeit. How?" Nowhere is a counterweight mentioned. The "counter balance" is a balancing scale, the type of which adorns many justice type statues. It is simply used to balance one set of coins against the other. There are no additional weights -- just 12 coins, one of which is a dud (counterfeit), and a balancing scale.

I would tell them, tosser or not - of course I would enjoy telling them more if they are a tosser. Do it. Just tell him you've been dreaming about him. Don't be specific, but make sure you say something about "head" and give him a knowing wink. That should help sort things out enormously.

"Patrick has been undergoing pioneering Cyberknife radiotherapy at California's Stamford University Medical Center, and had been making a steady recovery from the illness." Their definition of "recovery" is a little different to mine. Cyberknife therapy sounds rather gruesome too.

North or South? That's my point deadsox. The United States is part of the North American landmass. It is not the entire landmass nor populace of it, no matter how much it ignores everyone else. Failure to see this is one of the reasons why the USA is regarded as arrogant, insular and self-centred. As an example, this is like South Africans referring to their country as "Africa." Other, less important countries in Africa must, however, refer to themselves as their own country name. We all know how stupid some US politicians sound when they refer to a continent when they thought it was a country. The reverse is also true of a nation that refers to itself as a continent. Good God, honez, why are you so testy? Have I expressed myself to anyone in this forum in anything but a polite way? Sure I enjoy a good argument but do I have to shoulder all the misdeeds of every American who ever offended you? (Oops, there I go again) Every country and every people in the world have been guilty of crimes against someone. The history of the world is full of them. What's so bad about being grateful and happy and wishing all the same to all of you? LOL, sorry D/S my point isn't really aimed at you per se, and certainly not aimed at being grateful. It's just you're the lucky Yusan (which is what "Americans" should be called) that took the hook. I've known many Canuks over the years, and they all seem to dislike the US vehemently because of the kind of examples I gave. The US doesn't seem to notice, nor care, that they have this effect on other people. Just an observation. If my post makes just one Yusan think about it, then I'm happy (and can give thanks )

You simply must of a read of this.

Perhaps you're referring to a splendid celebration in just one of the North American countries, not a celebration right across the two (North and South) American continental landmasses. I don't think they celebrate it in Mexico, and Canada has their own on a different day, and I don't think it rates a mention in Brazil, Peru, Argentina, etc.

Winny, sweetheart. Would this not have been better suited to Ask a Deathlister? I know you meant to post it there but the pull of Room 101 was, for you, like a Dog pissing up its favourite tree. Never admit to being a cheapskate! To be fair, it was a difficult choice. On the one hand it is a general question, but on the other it is very annoying. I'm interested in the answer to this one too, I have a similar problem. With Word, I mean, not with being a cheapskate. If I were you I would uninstall as much Microsoft "trialware" as you can and head off to Open Office for some quality free alternatives. I've been using Open Office software for ages. It pretty much does everything most people need, they're free, they're good and they're not Microsoft. This is where the phrase you only get what you pay for does not apply.

If people are saying this - and if they're not being facetious - they have larger issues than celebrity death, as there were a great many films made in colour prior to TWOZ without any on-screen time from Mr. Raabe. You do realise that holding a conversation with yourself is not the done thing? -
Perhaps not a bad idea. My choice for today is green pea or yellow pea...both vegetarian options again. Green pea soup is suitable for vegetarians, however, yellow pee is not.

I suspect you are starting from a false proposition here. No, most people I know put them away upside down. Maybe I just know the wrong type of people. But thanks for such a prompt and thorough answer all the same. I quite like this deathlist site. Bars have historically placed their glasses upside down - as you said - to keep dust etc out of the glass. However, I agree there are then issues about what surface the glass rim is sitting on. We use drip mats that raise the glass off of the main surface (and run them through the dishwasher to maintain their cleanliness). However, I never thought about the way other establishments maintain hygiene/cleanliness - until TAFKAG raised the point. I suppose we all trust bar staff to ensure a clean glass storage environment(?) I store mine on their side, corks facing me. When I fancy a snifter, I simply grab one of the long-necked glasses from the rack in glass cellar, take the out cork and drink from it, being careful to align the glass label side down, to catch any careless drips whilst I am quaffing. When I have finished the entire glass, I wash it and toss it in the recycling. When I fancy another glass, I simply grab another long-necked one from the rack.
