    Derby Dead Pool 2016

There hasn't, just the two (Kantner and Anderson). Dan Hicks was around San Francisco at the same time as the Airplane but other than that there's no connection.
  2. I used to live a couple of streets away from Jan Leeming and saw her regularly. She's in vey good shape and will be going nowhere for a good few years. Her mother and father were both well into their 90s when they died recently.

    Terry Wogan

I've been musing whether there should be a tribute to Wogan at this year's Eurovision. I've come to the conclusion that unless they make an 'In Memoriam' section (like the Oscars) a regular thing then there shouldn't be a tribute. I don't think we've had tributes and the like before. Udo Jurgens only got a brief moment on screen last year because it was hosted by Austria. We've already lost so many Eurovision legends but, being a morbid sort who thinks the death montage is the best part of the Oscars ceremony, I'd quite like to see such a tribute segment, especially as so many worldwide Eurovision legends are getting on a bit. Otherwise, I think the only people who deserve a special tribute during the show are probably Lys Assia and the members of Abba. I think it's inevitable that there will be something for him at the national final.

    Terry Wogan

Wogan's death is not bigger than Bowie. Otherwise I agree with your post. He's one of the three people who I will never pick for my DDP teams (Grace Slick and June Whitfield are the other two). Perhaps I should have picked him, he'd have lasted longer then...

    Terry Wogan

The pips need to be crashed, giggled through or a song hastily cut off for the full 'Wake Up To Wogan' experience! Glad to see there's another Wogan's Web fan on here. Just 15 shows but what a legacy they left.

No longer a Floral Dance, more of a Floral Tribute. This proud TYG is absolutely gutted by this news. Eurovision, Wake Up To Wogan (proud TYG here), Wogan's Web and so much more. Never met him but did see him twice in the flesh - (1997 Eurovision and at YTV when he was in the dictionary corner on Countdown). Surprisingly tall. RIP

    Dead Pop Stars

2016 continues to be shit. Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane/Starship has died Confirmed by Cynthia Bowman, who is a long-time Airplane associate. Multiple organ failure and septic shock following a heart attack earlier this week. Rather a big death for this huge Airplane fan.

He co-wrote it so not sure what's funny unless they make it sound like he did it himself SC Pffft. Frey was notorious for taking credit for the tiniest of suggestions (very much "change a word take a third" kind of thing). Don Felder wrote the music, Don Henley the lyrics. I think pretty much all Frey did was suggest a key change or something. I seem to recall in his autobiography Felder was surprised when he saw Frey's name on the credits. Still sad news though. Saw the Eagles in 2011 at Hop Farm (Supajam offer so cost me £5.20). They were excellent, of course, even if they did look like accountants. I remember Boys Of Summer and Life's Been Good were played and always wondered if Frey was pissed off they didn't do The Heat Is On.
  9. Far too many to mention (pretty much any Blondie, Abba, Duran Duran, early U2, Madonna, Jefferson Airplane for starters) so I'll name just the one: Echo Beach - Martha And The Muffins

I rather like 'Name the entire universe after David Bowie myself' too. As Mike Thomas of Streatley says, it's the sensible option.

Biggest 'miss(es)' by the DL Committee 2016

I've only heard of Pat Harrington Jr because I've just read Mackenzie Phillips' autobiography (ooh, now there's one to watch if she relapses) and so have vaguely heard of One Day At A Time. I don't think it was shown in the UK - I certainly don't recall watching it and I probably would have done had it been on here. Most people don't care about baseball in the UK so Monte Irvin is unkonwn. As for other people mentioned, only Robert Black could have a contender but even then he wasn't *that* old and wasn't known to have any recent ailments (it looks like he died of natural causes, so...). Bowie, despite the heart attack over ten years ago, wasn't even on the radar. So hardly big misses from the DI team.

    David Bowie

You are joking, aren't you? As great as Springsteen, Prince and Wonder are, she's miles above all three in musical importance stakes. It will be a big deal when she dies, though I agree that it probably won't come as a surprise and most people will put it down to her recent ill health.
  13. Tsk! As a certain Edina Monsoon once said: "you can never have too much Lulu". And, regardless of what people think about her, she's got a cracking voice. No-one mentioned 'Imagine' yet? Up there with Hey Jude and Let It Be as overplayed and we're all supposed to get mawkishly emotional over it. R.E.M.'s Everybody Hurts is another one. Mawkish tripe and not a patch on anything from their IRS years either. And on a personal note, if Blondie (or Debbie Harry solo) never played The Tide Is High live again I wouldn't shed any tears. Can't believe someone's mentioned a Boney M song, and Seven Tears is a perfect example of classic Schlager. Cloth ears, the lot of you!

The only trouble with the Wiki page suggestion is that there are quite a few people who should have pages and don't - actress Toni Palmer for one. I'd like to see non-famous entries banned too, unless they've done a lot to highlight their disease throughout the years and have in turn become, if not famous, then a familiar face, rather than just "brave mother of three" whose sent news of their dying blog to the Daily Mail. So - someone like Hayley Okines (age notwithstanding) or Jane Tomlinson would be accepted but some otherwise unfamous "brave mother of three" who's publicised their "last Christmas" in the local press and somehow the DM have sezied upon it wouldn't. Not that I'm whinging either, by the way. I think TMIB does a tremendous job.

I wonder how Ken Bates' health is? Don't mind me. I'm just testing the above theory.

    David Bowie

Yep. Many of the "greats" are passing or past 70. I know when discussing out DDP team, me and my sister always have arguments about the so-called 'boomer' pop stars as any of them could drop down dead just like that, so without knowledge of illness they're very difficult to predict. Also, most of my heroes and idols are getting to or beyond that that age. If I'm this upset about someone who I liked just a lot, I don't even want to think what it's going to be like when Debbie Harry, Grace Slick or one of Abba goes.

    David Bowie

I'm glad he was able to keep it quiet if that's what he wanted. A fuck you to the corpse chasing media and indirectly to wankers like us. I reckon there's a few dozen would get similar coverage if they died unexpectedly like Bowie: Prince Mick Jagger Paul McCartney Bob Dylan Madonna Elton John Cliff Richard Any member of Abba Edited your list to people who would be in anyway as big a death as Bowie, and I'd say McCartney and Madonna are probably the only ones who encompass as big a musical *and* cultural space. (I've left Abba in for personal reasons, and I'd possibly add Debbie Harry to that list). But, of course, even if it's out of mode for here, death isn't a pissing contest.

    David Bowie

I've just had to break the news to a couple of schoolkids in Tesco that 'The Man Who Sold The World' was not actually a Nirvana song but in fact by Lulu. I'm surprised at just how much I'm in bits about the news to be honest. As much as I loved Bowie he has never been my god (Debbie Harry is), but this is a horrible reminder of the mortality of our idols and heroes. Plus he was top of my list of people who were (past tense now sadly appropriate) still alive and likely to tour who I've never seen live, and now that will not happen. Probably going to be watching The Hunger in tribute tonight.

Mine are in my signature. The almost certainly a unique pick I spoke about earlier is Silvio Ciccone aka Madonna's dad. My sister has tickets to see Madge in Melbourne, where she hasn't played for donkeys years and has form in scrapping Down Under tours before so it'd be typical if something happened on the eve of it.

    2016 DDP salvage lot

Helen Fawkes - seems to be at that stage of terminal cancer where she's all right and reasonably healthy. Of course, the cancer could take hold with a vengeance at any moment but I'm willing to take the risk she'll be around until at least 2017. Gazza - I know he's just been in rehab again but he's looking less ill than he did a year or so back when he looked gaunt and like a walking corpse. I have no doubt alcoholism will get him in the end but he's probably good for a liver transplant and a few more years yet. Clive James - those experimental research drugs have done him the world of good. See Helen Fawkes above. Caroline Aherne - haven't really heard much about her recently, though I think she did a voiceover for something not so long ago. One to watch.
