  1. ***Random off-topic factoid***

I suppose this is common knowledge but I only just learned that the current pope is a former nightclub bouncer.

    ***Back on topic***

    He hasn't died yet.

    ***Back on off topic***

Years ago bookies received a flood of bets on the next pope will be a Newcastle United supporter; betting was suspended when they realised Cardinal Basil Hume was amongst the favourites for the papacy. He's dead.

  2. I've done a couple of searches but haven't seen this being mentioned.

Former deputy prime minister under Boris Yeltsin, and outspoken critic of Putin was shot in the back 4 times and killed, last Friday.

Dr Z mentioned it the other day I think in this thread and then got Hein to move it to Ukraine Crisis. DZ didn't mention the guy by name though.

  3. I have extensively googled Lord Healey and I can confirm that his last public appearance or comment was the day Tony Benn died last year ,March 14, 2014, when he gave an interview to Newsnight. He appeared very frail in that interview. In the preceding year , by contrast, he made numerous public appearances and comments. Clearly his condition has deteriorated a lot in the past year or someone like Healey would not resist commenting on the political situation, esp with a general election coming up. Does it mean he's going to die tomorrow? No ,not necessarily. But he's worth keeping a close eye on. That's all I'm saying ...

Why aren't you posting all of this Denis Healey stuff in the Denis Healey thread?

I have to admit, when I was very small, Star Trek always freaked me out.

Was it the full face of the alien in the closing credits?

Actually, I just happened to turn it on during a scene where somebody was beheading someone.

I am still trying to work out which episode featured a beheading (I am by no means a Trek expert. I am mostly familiar with the films.) RadGuy or Bibliogryphon, any idea what the episode was called?

    Bread and Circuses.?

I think that was the only episode I've ever watched of Star Trek, but to be honest I don't even remember there being a beheading in it.

I don't think that wasn't the same episode ... I was very small also, so I don't really remember if it was a beheading or being stabbed some other part of the body, but it scared the crap out of me!

Does this scene ring any bells?

He tweeted about an hour ago. Damn this iPad. I still can't copy and paste from Twitter.

I don't give a shit as long as I get my stick of rock! :D

Sorry cat. Security wouldn't let me take it on to the 'plane. They said it resembled a stick of dynamite. ;-)

Aw bugger! Such is life! :(

I live in Poland, we border Ukraine and Russia (via Kaliningrad) so Putin might invade us too if all the rumours about his plans to invade more countries is true.

How close are you to that border? Does your gut instinct say it's just speculation or do you think he might really do it?

I live in Kraków, it's rather in the East of Poland but not very close to the border. I don't think he'll really do it. I think he's too scared to invade an EU country.

Let alone a NATO member. All for one ...

Feel like enough time has passed for me to admit that I was very close to picking my uncle on this year's DDP (he'd get a local BBC radio mention no problem) but backed out at the last minute because that would probably have been too much even for me.

Did you ask him whether he had any objection?

Also could you name him so those of us not related can pick him free of moral issues?

Yeah, good points above. There are those - like Keith Richards - who appear happy to be picked hereabouts.

EH? I must have missed him say that?

On topic - does anyone have certain people to whom they have absolutely no familial connection, no work or friendship etc connection and is not a famous for being ill type who they won't pick out of admiration and or it just feels wrong?

    Currently, Norman Winton.

FAO Maryport, Mr Richards and the Deathlist. He was apparently on some other Deathlist in the 70s and is mixing them up due to all the drugs. Or something.

Bald Rick posted a link to The Sun article way back in 2006 but it no longer works.

    Here's his post.

"Excuse me, are you Terry Gill....."

    "I am!"

"Wow, I loved your sketches in Monty Python!"

You're thinking of Terry Gilliam.Different bloke altogether !

I bet you think Gill.i.am is in The Black Eyed Peas.

Excuse me if I ask something stupid, offensive or blasphemous, but wouldn't it be better if the Scottish footy leagues played their games in summer, as the Swedes and Norwegians do?

    regards,

    Hein

But it would clash with the cricket season. :P

God job crickets an English sport then..

Ah well now, I wondered about that, but decided that Mr O'Falk will know that well enough hence the :P on the end. I mean you can't live here and not know of Midlothian or Dumbartonshire County Cricket teams can you? :S

The Netherlands have a national cricket team too.

And you only need to look at the post above yours to see that it was posted 14 hours earlier

    Haha.

So long as you understand when I 'complain' I'm only mocking those that do and mean it.

I'll just let it go... CuZ I couldn't care less if we post 10x but I DO care if we miss an obit altogether.

Thereby creating 10 possible discussions over a potential 10 threads and making us search to find what's being said about the deceased, instead of one discussion in one thread. You posted previously that you would do a search in future; you did clearly not on this occasion. I'm new here on this British site and you guys are gonna change and do this the American way.

Edit: Apologies to newbie Buried In Carolina who seems to be a thoroughly decent chap.
