The last of the ANZACs

Recommended Posts

There's only a few ANZAC soldiers left that served in the Great War (that's WWI for the youngsters) and they're all looking like they've marched in their last parade.

See the line up at the Last ANZACs

Not sure who's keen to be next over the side, but they're a bunch that's definitely worth keeping tabs on for 2005.

But is being an ANZAC famous enough in itself.

Other than the film Gallipoli being about them.

Well, Ted Smout, the last one to hang up his army boots, got a good write up in the UK's Daily Telegraph.

Not sure if he made the pommie press obituaries though.

...should have been "the rest of the pommie press obits"

From the article

Smout had half-hoped to be the very last Australian survivor of the Great War. Perhaps this would have come to pass if, before his 105th birthday, his grandfather clock had not fallen on him while he was resetting its weights.

Truely a case of time running out for him....

 And the clock struck Ted...

Time weighed heavily on his hands...etc etc

I guess he looked death in the face.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls...

Or is this just a wind-up?

What a great bit of history from honez. About 5 miles from where I live, we have 114 Anzac graves at St. Mary's church, Harefield - the victims who died of their wounds at Harefield hospital - now more well-known for its heart transplants. I love all the nicknames: The Sniper, The Gunner, The Last Witness???? I don't actually understand that one can anyone explain? Also are the nicknames a product of the journalists over-active imagination, or have they carried these titles for some time? Anyway, great history, but, alas, probably not DL qualifiers.

DWB

Depends on how far you want to go back and what your definition of "full list" is.

I believe there were quite a few of 'em back in 1914 and it's been downhill ever since.

Quote from The last Anzacs:

"This is how Dr Jonathan King has described meeting and hearing the life stories of these brave Diggers"

... his predilections have gone from one end of the spectrum to the other then?! :D

I think this is out of date - the Telegraph had an obit of the last ANZAC a couple of years ago

untrue there's still a couple left here in Australia. Not too many though.

Fair enough - maybe it was last one at Gallipoli
