The Weatherman Death Pool

No problem w90. Luckily I posted the entire list of teams and their selections right here in this thread, shortly after the competition started, so you should be able to easily retrieve them without any difficulty. Regards, ff Thanks - fortunately a friendly wikipedian provided me with all the source code from the previous headquarters. Everything has now been copied over and the new HQ is fully updated. There are still some minor tweaks - like brining in some images, straightening out the old news page, and getting rid of certain links. Other than that, WDP 06-07 is nearing its final days, and registration for 07-08 is a month or so away. I still think that we will be able to get a couple more hits out of the current pool - coming close to my Sep 30 prediction of 17. -

Good news - I was able to retrieve the lost code - everything now just needs to be copied over. Should be done by later this evening. http://weatherman90.googlepages.com -

India: - 2005 estimate 1,103,371,000 - 2001 census 1,027,015,248 United States: - 2007 estimate 301,055,000 - 2000 census 281,421,906 You're correct indeed, but remember, picks have to have an article on the English wikipedia. So very few indians have articles there. -

Thanks for the help - I'm in contact with a Wikipedia admin who should be able to supply me with the entire page before it was deleted. That would be the ideal scenario. I will continue to give updates. -

Now some good news - the new headquarters is up and running as promised, located at http://weatherman90.googlepages.com/home. I'm pleased to say that its "sleek" new design even outmatches the previous. Unfortunately, I still have to sort out the list of teams and their picks. It is unlikely that I will be able to re-assemble the list for everyone's team, because I only have the information from the teams that registered here on the PM's. But do not fear, I still have the master list of all celebrities picked as well as the number of teams who selected him/her, so if a pick or two is yet to go this year, we will easily be able to sort out who the points belong to. I will be able to completely reconstruct the scoreboard by using the "old news" page as well as this topic where I always posted who chose the celebrity and how many points were given. All in all, there is no reason for alarm - the winner will still be "official", and not just a guess. When visiting the new and improved headquarters, make sure to scroll to the bottom and check out the 07-08 rules page, as well as the 07-08 registration page. Once again, registration for WDP II begins on March 1, 2007. -

I have some not-so-great news - you may or may not have already noticed that the WDP homepage is no longer accessable. The evil Wiki-mods have finally gotten to it, and it is now history. Fortunately - all information regarding scores was saved, and I am now assembling an alternate WDP Headquarters which is located Here. The Url is "http://weatherman90.googlepages.com" there is no "www'. So, change your favorites/notes accordingly. I knew this would happen eventually - but I was hoping it would happen after the end of the 1st pool. But do not fear, the new site will be up and running by the end of today. Apologies for the confusion - registration for the WDP II will continue as normal on March 1, and the pool will take place at the new and improved headquarters. Remember - either PM your picks here, or email them to wdp0708@gmail.com. -
24 days and still no hit. Hugo Chavez of course insists that Castro is now "jogging", but of course one can assume that Chavez just doesn't want his good pal to die.
-
#5 in just 24 days - of course world's oldest person Emiliano Mercado del Toro.

WDP I obviously has quite a bit of steam left. Here is strike 15. The world's oldest person and world's oldest man, Emiliano Mercado Del Toro has died at the age of 115. Del Toro was unique in that he is the only validated world's oldest person to be a man out of the last 40 oldest people. The second oldest man under him was 4 years his junior, and had he survived for a few more months he would have been the oldest fully validated man ever in history. Three teams selected Del Toro, RMHED, Icelandic Hurricane, and Octopus of Odstock. Since Mr. Del Toro was rather old, all three teams receive only the minimum of six points. RMHED now surpasses Football Fan for 3rd place with 32 points. Canadian Paul still maintains the top spot. 66 days are now left in the pool. -

Aww...Don't feel so bad OoO! 15 other teams did the same thing. On that topic, we now interrupt the discussion of the 07-08 pool with the news that Art Buchwald is now dead. He is the 14th hit for the WDP. Four teams selected Buchwald: RMHED, Canadian Paul, Obiskobilob, and Maryportfuncity. Those four teams receive four points each. This is the fifth hit for Canadian Paul, who now reclaims 1st place with 38 points, leaving Slave to the Grave in 2nd place with 37. Football Fan and Obiskobilov are now tied for 3rd place with 30 points. So, congratulations to Canadian Paul as we now inch closer and closer to the end of the pool. It has been a dead heat between CP and Slave to the Grave for almost the entire pool. Both teams have had 5 hits and have 5 selections left. CP has Ariel Sharon, Saad Al Sabah, Gabriel Marquez, Windsor Davies, and Deborah Kerr left. SttG has Bobby Bland, Tammy Faye, Billy Graham, Ariel Sharon, and Larry Hagman. Both teams have some picks that are in failing health, but my prediction for the winner is for SttG to reclaim 1st place with the death of Tammy Faye. Link to WDP HQ -
Americans, and anyone else who reads English wikipedia have a tendency to read dirty articles: 16 out of the top 100 visited pages, found here, are sex related. I won't post them for obvious reasons, but if you browse through, you will indeed see the 16 sex related articles that made the top 100. I suppose most of this can be attributed to the fact that the average man who discovers wikipedia will instantly wonder if it has an article on "boobs".

This is the kind of thing that could get a Tammy Faye fan ranting on here for hours.

I would permit "born in the Netherlands" - since it would be difficult to come up with such a list as you mentioned. The general guideline for anyone considering a theme team: If you don't have to research and find people who fit your category, it is probably too broad. The best way to see if it will be allowed is just to notify me of the type of team you are considering and I will either approve or disapprove. Remember: Theme teams are just an option. It's probably a bad idea if you find yourself adding people who probably won't die to your theme team just so you have a full 10. I can't cover all the possible teams, but here is a random list of types of theme teams I won't allow: Born in USA Born in UK Suffering from CANCER - be more specific (stomach cancer, panceratic cancer) and I will allow it. I don't know if that was sarcastic or not , but those were 2 examples of possible theme teams. -

A good question indeed - I'm not sure what to say. Has any other pool addressed this issue? It is literally two deaths, but then again they are sort of a package deal (one goes, the other has to), so I will give some thought to this. Ahh - it is a wiki-pool, as I like to call it, and the first of its kind. Picks must have a permanent article on wikipedia (meaning you can't create it only to have it deleted by admin later). That is the only requirement. -

Right - some examples of theme teams could be "born in 1940" or "suffering from alzheimers", etc.. Theme teams can't be too broad either (born in USA) - so submit them early because I might have to ask you to narrow it down. -

UPDATE: The New Official Rules for WDP II For a bit of a refresher - this is a wiki-deadpool. Your 10 celebs must all have valid wikipedia articles. No other restrictions except those mentioned below are in place. DL MEMBERS - Submit your list of 10 celebs through the Private Messaging system. Include a substitute in case one decides to go early. If I can't get ahold of you in time, you might lose that slot if you didn't provide a substitute. OTHER MEMBERS - Submit your list to wdp0708@gmail.com. * All Entries Must be Received Prior to 00:01 UTC on April 1, 2006. * NEW BONUSES: Theme Teams - pick your 10 celebs so that they all have something in common(not too broad) and receive a bonus of 3 points if and when your first celebrity dies. TIP: Make sure you note that you have created a theme team - I might not realize it! Unique Picks - will now be awarded an extra point on their demise. (A unique pick is a pick that only you have picked.) NEW RULES: One team per person! - (Pretty self-explanatory) No Picks on Death Row - Since it would be easy to find 10 inmates on death row with wikipedia articles, no picks on death row are now allowed. (Thanks for the tip, CP!) SCORING: Scoring is the same. * Aged 1-30 Years - 10 Points * Aged 31-55 Years - 9 Points * Aged 56-70 Years - 8 Points * Aged 71-85 Years - 7 Points * Aged 85-122 Years - 6 Points Remember: This pool's 12 month run spans into two different years. Ages will always be confusing - The ages posted on the site will be as of the pool's end. Points are given on the basis of how old the person was at their time of death, so don't sweat over what ages are posted on the site. Enjoy WDP II, Registration begins March 1. Happy pick finding! -
A user on wikipedia tried to create a category for survivors of the 19th century, but it was deleted by administrators per some odd technicality. He kept the list on his userpage: here. Although note that these are the survivors that have wiki articles. GRG (Gerontology Research Group) has a continually updated table of validated supercentenarians (110+). 83 are currently on the list. In 3 years, survivors of the 19th century will be essentially the same as the list of validated supercentenarians. For now, I would guess that there are easily 3-400 survivors of the 19th century left. Since the validated 110+s break down like so: 115: 2 114: 2 113: 6 112: 13 111: 25 110: 35 One could project 109: 56 108: 94 107: 145 I would say that the list will be narrowed down to a number similar to the WW1 vets in about 3 years. Until then, a sizable amount of survivors are still alive.

You just beat me to it - the deaths will have to slow down at some point - at this rate (5 a month), they will all be gone before December.
-
I agree - the video is very soothing.

Thanks for the huge response of ideas everyone - I will be implementing many of them in the next pool. As for the entry process, I will request that all DLers registering do so through the Private Messaging system here at the DL, ensuring privacy for all teams. Entries coming from Wikipedia viewers &/or other sources will submit their picks via email - that way privacy will be protected, and I will have an email address so I can contact the team member should they score a hit or win the pool. I'm lucky that WSDA (who presumably found the pool on wikipedia) did not do well in the pool as I have no means of contacting him/her - this method will eliminate that problem. Theme teams - I have been considering this concept ever since I saw Canadian Paul's pool. I am still unsure whether or not I will offer this - but if I would, the bonus would probably be 3 points - just enough to give a team an edge in the event of a tie. I will be considering these items and more prior to the entry opening date of March 1st. -

That's my second gender error of the week. My apologies, VT. Perhaps everyone should follow my example and have either "man" or "woman" at the end of their forum names. That would just be too funny. -
I don't have a myspace, but I do have This, which Magere Hein used to create This entertaining image.
