I don't go in any "chat" either. I never did. I haven't been in the chat in about a year . Aren't these contradictory statements? Just wondering.

My side (and Charlton's) won an important Supreme Court decision today, 5-4.

Thanks Phantom. If anyone has any idea as to what exactly is ailing harold, I'd be interested.

I generally have a positive view on things since I have been tremendously blessed. I have fun every day and advise everyone else to do the same since, as this forum ultimately proves, none of us are getting out of here alive. Get out and enjoy all the wonderful and fascinating things the world has to offer. Love someone and spread some good karma because that is the only way we can really influence things. As for my dotage, if I've been as good a father and grandfather as I should have, I shouldn't have to worry about that. I have no fears (but then again, I have a shotgun).

I don't think BS is bright or resourceful enough for the kind of skulduggery that might erode my edge. I don't feel anywhere near strongly enough for a fight in the car park [although I'd give myself pretty good odds on that, too]. I'd happily open a book on such a good old fashioned scrap, though, if anybody else fancies some hand-to-hand with what I imagine is a pretty scrawny and anaemic sample of half-masculinity. [um, how did I get drawn into all this....? ] Alph, you poker playing scrapper! Are y'all from Texas?

I recently read in a blog that Harold Pinter didn't show up at Cambridge University to accept an honorary degree due to ill health. Anyone out there have any more detailed information?

Sorry BC but I think you're way off base on Fossett. He's dead. This guy, however, is not http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jsOFaOt...qp-QKQD91BD3NO4

I actually like this thread. It's a lot more interesting than a lot of the others. So I want to keep the thread and BS for anyone who's counting.

Liberals aren't "live and let live" anymore, Mary. They are the new fascists.

I voted to keep BS and buy him a dictionary.

Just like in sports betting, it's best to keep emotions out of it. I wouldn't bet on teams I like, e.g. because I'd always be thinking up reasons why they might win instead of rationally figuring if they were likely to win. In my league, one team used their "franchise" tag on Osama bin Laden for six years. Needless to say, he didn't score and they lost money all of those years.

I say "Why lie?" Here is one of the latest articles which this A.E. Hotcher claims to be misquoted by the media. Some political figures (Probably Than Shwe.. Umaru Yar’Adua... Yasuo Fukuda) are all names who tried to conceal their health struggles, but that's politics. From the reactions in some of the articles, I'm being given the impression (He had surgery, he is now recovering) sort of vibe. I don't think it's impossible that he has cancer but having it be terminal is an example of how tabloids overreact. The answer to "why lie" is that celebrities don't like their personal struggles to be aired publicly (a perfectly understandable reaction). There is far too much evidence here to deny that Paul Newman has a very serious type of cancer (lung cancer is probably it). If we were sitting in a bar I would ask how much you want to bet. As I said in a previous post, "sad last days" stories are one of the things that tabloids often get right. I've had Paul Newman as a strong candidate for my deathlist of 2009, even 2008. But at this juncture, if Paul Newman doesn't want to be bothered right now, re: any potential illnesses, let him be. He's a wonderful act who's always been low-key and private. With that said, as much as I'm rooting for him to recover (if he's indeed sick), at his advanced age (83) and the way he has looked, I don't have much hope for him. Yes, BC, I'll "let him be". I won't go to his house or call him on the phone, OK? Regarding whether I want him to recover, although it's been said, the idea of this sort of thing (death pools, death leagues) is to correctly predict who's going to die, not wish for it. One of my first picks in the Death League was Mother Teresa. I admired her as one of the best people in the world and certainly didn't want her to die, but as she was old and sick, I selected her as a terrific candidate.

Guests, A Deathlist Enhancement, Or Detriment?
deadsox replied to Tempus Fugit's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Let them post. What are you afraid of? -
BS, you can't possibly be serious. Agents and other mouthpieces are paid to lie. It's pretty much certain that Newman has cancer.
-
Well, he was extremely sprightly on TV when he was interviewed on Thursday & looking forward to the proposed merger of CART & IRL this year, and announced plans for the 2009 & 2010 season. If he's in his last days, then he's doing extremely well, that's all I can say. I'd think we know if Newman was really ill, as he has too many fingers into too many pies, that if he WAS gravely ill, someone, somewhere would notice. He's meant to be working on a new movie at the moment. I forget where I read about it. Can't even remember if he's just directing it or if he makes an appearance in it too. I'll try and find the news article. edited to say: my mistake, He's directing a stage production of "Of Mice and Men" What did I tell you?

Regarding the insect repellent discussion, only repellents with a lot of deet are effective. I always make sure I wash it off when I get out of the woods but you won't enjoy your outdoor experience with a bunch of mosquitoes biting you and there are now several serious diseases that you can contract from them.
-
As an outdoors man, I can tell you that any good insect repellent can keep mosquitoes away, but nothing except for a head net and long pants and sleeves can save you from black flies.

Since my Death league team is on a roll, I'll go with another Dead Sox, Yitzhak Shamir.
-
I picked Jack last year for my Death League team based on the cancer rumors but never could find much to substantiate it. He seemed to be working at least a bit last year. I'd like to hear more too.

So, you lasted a little over a week. Couldn't stay away BS? -
I was just wondering, could keeping him alive have something to do with Jewish religion or Isreali lifestyle? I remember a couple of years ago, there was something in the news about a trail being held in Italy. I believe it was because a docter pulled the plug on a patient (who was termanilly ill, and wanted it). But it was illigal to do that, because the moral laws of the Roman-Catholic church its was imorral to end a persons life. I could have remembered this badly, and have not a lot of knowledge on the Jewish, Islamic or Roman-Catholic faith. There are many different stripes of Judaism, Vaagy. Most Jews that I know would pull the plug if they were sure that the patient had no hope but some sects might object on principle. As I said in my other post, I suspect they're just grasping at straws.
