For what its worth I thought it was worth mentioning that the wife of Lee Majors hasn't posted a picture on her Instagram that features her famous husband since May last year.. Her habit prior to this was to post current pictures of him quite frequently. There could be many explanations for this but I felt it worth mentioning to deadpoolers. -

On this day in 1998 British American actor and former Hollywood child star Roddy McDowall died aged 70. Born in England his family moved to the US in 1940 after the outbreak of World War two. He became a naturalised US citizen in 1949 aged 21. He served in a division if the US reserve army corps for 8 years from 1946. In terms of acting and british showbiz it seems he was destined to follow this path. He was a child model as a baby in the UK and won an acting prize in school aged just 9. Then a series of small film roles followed in 1938 in british films such as Murder in the family -with Jessica Tandy, George Formby comedy I see ice and a family drama called Scruffy. Roddys first Hollywood studio film was Man Hunt(1941) with Walter Pidgeon and Joan Bennett as the main stars. Fox was the first studio to sign him but they loaned him out to MGM to film Lassie Come home in 1943 were he co-starred with eleven year old Elizabeth Taylor who became a lifelong friend. In the 1950s Roddy moved to New York and threw himself into many television guest acting roles as well as his love for appearing on stage in the theatre.Significant critical success in Broadway followed. A return to Hollywood in the 1960s and one of his more memorable roles as ape Cornelius in hit Sci fi film Planet of the apes resulted. Roddy was regarded as a true jobbing actor, not snobbish at all about working in the medium of television, taking roles big or small in theatre, film and television . A huge figure in the Hollywood social scene, known for his passion for photography and video cameras at celebrity partys and when working on film sets - effectively chronicling much of Hollywood and the social scene during much of the golden age of tinseltown The laws however on the medium of photography and video cassettes were ambiguous and at one point the FBI raided his home seizing his video cassetes as part of an investigation into film piracy . No charges were ever filed. Openly gay with his friends Roddy was once in a relationship with actor Montgomery Clift. Some other films he appeared in are Fright Night (1985), Pretty maids all in a row(1971) with Angie Dickinson and Rock Hudson, Killer Shark - a B movie in 1950, Cleopatra (1963), The Posideon Adventure (1972), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) and Circle of Iron (1978) -A film Bruce Lee was also set to star in but died before filming commenced. Roddy was said to be one of the most discrete people in Hollywood and a keeper of many confidences and secrets. There is a rumour he wrote his memoirs on the condition they are not published until 100 years after his death in order to avoid any of his friends or their immediate family getting hurt! Crazy if true but alas I won't digress! -

On this day 37 years ago in 1985, legendary Hollywood hearthrob and star of Hollywoods golden age, Rock Hudson died as a result of AIDS complications aged 59. He was one of the earliest big name stars known to have been diagnosed with HIV and die from it. Now famously known to have closeted in arss tolerant era, boarding in fake romances with ladies set up by Hollywood studios and agents to both avoid suspicion about his personal life and promote his wholesome nice guy/ boy next door image. A threat by then influential gossip and scandal magazine Confidential to publish details of Rocks homosexual love life was stalled by his agent Willson who rather ruthlessly cut a deal with the magazine to not publish the information in exchange for detailed information on two of his other clients- Tab Hunter and Rory Calhoun. At the time in 1955 Rock was on his way to being one of the eras most bankable and popular leading men so it was decided he must be protected. He even married Phyliss Gates, his agent Henry Willsons secretary but she has always maintained they married for love and she never remarried after their divorce. Many of his close female friends in Hollywood like Audrey Hepburn, Susan Saint James, Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Andrew's and Carol Burnett said they knew of his homosexuality for years and as good friends kept his secret and respected his privacy. Among his films were All that heaven allows (1955) Directed by Douglas Sirk and starring Jane Wyman, Lovers come back(1961), Send me no flowers 1964) and Pillow talk(1959) were hugely succesful onscreen pairings with Doris Day, Something of value (1957) with Dana Wynter and Sidney Poitier, Captain Lightfoot (1955) with Barbara Rush, A fine pair (1968) opposite Claudia Cardinale and The Undefeated (1969) with John Wayne's. Looking through his filmography I am a bit pleasantly surprised how many of his costar like Barbara Rush are still with us. He was friends with US President Reagan and his wife Nancy and was present at a White House state dinner with them less than three weeks before his HIV diagnosis (pictured above) . The friendship however did not translate into much softening of the administrations policies on the AIDS epidemic in the early days of the crisis. Rock Hudsons last role was in primetime soap Dynasty were he played Daniel Reece, the biological father of Heather Locklears character Sammy Jo for 9 episodes.. There was some controversy regarding his role on Dynasty after his diagnosis was made public because Rock had some long kissing scenes with Linda Evans and the Screen actors guild introduced a rule that any actors involved in open mouthed kissing scenes with a HIV positive actor be informed in advance and have the right to refuse to do those scenes . Shortly before his death Rock made a quarter of a million dollar donation to an AIDS research foundation. Random fact -US singer and actor Pat Boone visited Rock Hudson a week before he died with a pentecostal prayer group despite Rock previously rejecting belief in God. -

Two more bad polls for the tories at the beginning of their party conference. Voting intentions for the next General election gives Labour a 19 point lead and another poll says 71% of people who backed the tories in 2019 say Truss and Kwarteng have lost control of the economy. If you read Sam Freedmans twitter thread you'll see polling numbers /approval ratings did not nosedive this quickly and this much after Black Wednesday in the 1990s. -

https://open.spotify.com/episode/2AvG1ecWkbvD9J4GAsBDAM?si=4QPudNzCQQ-4r9E_Yb5NJw&utm_source=copy-link In the early part of this podcast-Red box politics veteran Conservative MP Charles Walker basically says bar an unlikely miracle the tories are going to lose the next General election and says the party now has a patriotic duty to endeavour to begin to build a decent situation for the next government to be able to build on for the sake of the country and not just do what they think is in the best interests of the Conservative Party. Lots of emphasis from him on how governments are custodians of the country looking after it during a period of leasehold between elections and mustn't run the country to fit narrow political party wishes or interests. -

Two interesting tweets on UK politics I came across today. One a claim by the often reliable Guido Fawkes that tory mps were told yesterday not to expect a General election until the very last possible minute in January 2025. Another political journalist Dan Hodges stressing how unsustainable the current situation is. So quite a contrast. -
