Two Hollywood actors celebrate their birthday today. Firstly Golden Globe winning american actor James Brolin celebrates turning 82 today. And Vin Diesel , most famous for his role in the hugely successful Fast and Furious film franchise, celebrates his 55th birthday today.

On this day in 2003 british scientist and government weapons inspector Dr David Kelly died aged 59. He was found dead in Harrowdown Hill in Oxfordshire. He was the source for a BBC journalist regarding claims the Blair government had exaggerated intelligence information regarding iraqs weapons of mass destruction and had sexed up the dossier that was presented to parliament in order to build political support for the war. His death led to the Hutton Inquiry. While his death has been ruled as suicide to this day numerous suspicions and conspiracy theories rightly or wrongly linger.

On this day 21 years ago in 2001, American newspaper publisher Katherine Graham died aged 84. She was at the helm of The Washington Post newspaper during the watergate scandal that brought down President Richard Nixon- with the papers role in forcing his resignation and resisting immense pressure to bury the story being crucial.

On this day in 2012 Oscar winning american actress Celeste Holm died aged 95. Some of the big films from the golden age of Hollywood she starred in include All about Eve with Bette Davis and Anne Baxter, High Society with Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly and Gentlemans agreement with Gregory Peck for which she won her best supporting actress Oscar. In 2004 on her 87th birthday Celeste married opera singer Frank Basile who was 41 years her junior. She had met him in 1999 att a charity fundraiser he sang at. Her younger son Daniel set up an irrevocable financial trust to shelter her money from taxes but created many protocols for her to be able to access large amounts. Her husband always contested the sons real motives was to keep him away from her money regarding him as a user and goldigger. A five year legal battle followed that cost millions and left her effectively penniless as both sides paid their legal costs from the trust. In 2010 an agreement was reached that meant her widower had to vacate Celestes home within 60 days of her death so it could be sold and the money from the sale be split between her two sons and widower equally. But the millions in her trust however were gone.

On this day in 2005 Dame Cicely Saunders , an English nurse and then doctor who is credited with being the founder of the modern hospice movement, died from cancer aged 87. Cicely trained as a nurse during World War two at the Nightingale school of nursing at St Thomas's hospital. In 1948 she fell in love with a polish jew who was one of her patients. He was dying of cancer. In his will he bequeathed her £500- roughly £19,000 in todays money to be "a window in your home". This whole experience was the genesis of her ideas and passionate desire to open a hospice which resulted in St Christophers Hospice in Sydenham London being the first concrete tangible progress in this mission. After his death she went on to train to be a social worker and whilst holidaying with some christians she was converted from Judaism to Christianity . Working part time at St Lukes Home for the dying poor in Bayswater London was instrumental in Cicely then deciding to study to be a physician. A year later she began working at a Catholic hospice in Hackney where she would stay for seven years researching pain control. Yet again she met a Polish patient who she fell in love with. A combination of his death in 1960 followed shortly afterwards in 1961 by the death of her father and a close friend led to a period of very intense grieving that confirmed her belief and determination to set up her own hospice for cancer patients to meet unmet need . In 1967 she opened the world's first purpose built hospice and combined clinical research along with her Christian philosophy of palliative care that everyone matters and a holistic approach and thus the modern hospice movement was born. She was much lauded for er work and achievements . However one arguable blot on her copybook was her spoken reluctance to admit aids patients to St Christophers hospice, bemoaning the extra delicate burdens it caused in an already sensitive environment for other people receiving hospice care. Indicating that even though it was irrational there would be dying patients who were considering hospice care but reluctant to take it as they were fearful of having aids patients around them.
