Joan Chase, an author whose first book was published when she was 46 and attracted awards and accolades, died on April 17 at a nursing home in Needham, Mass. She was 81. Her husband, Alexander Solomita (I assume the director), confirmed the death. He said she had Parkinson’s disease and Lewy Body disease. Ms. Chase’s first novel, “During the Reign of the Queen of Persia” (1983), inspired a chorus of positive reviews, earned a spot on the New York Times Book Review’s list of the top books of the year and won the Ernest Hemingway Foundation/PEN Award. Maybe illustrators need a thread, seeing as they're posted across no less than 3 threads presently (authors, cartoonists, art). Since this one authored books for children later in her career, here she shall reside. Alice Provensen, who illustrated and often wrote books for children for more than a half-century, helping young readers learn about animals and aviators, poems and presidents, Aesop’s fables and Chinese legends, died on April 23 in San Clemente, Calif. She was 99. For almost 40 years, Ms. Provensen formed half of an illustrating team that was famous in the world of children’s books. Her husband, Martin, was the other half. Together they illustrated dozens of books for young and very young readers, beginning in the 1940s, and as their careers advanced they wrote many as well. SC

The president of Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion died in a plane crash in New York state over the weekend. Rabbi Aaron D. Panken, 53, was piloting the small aircraft when it crashed in Hudson Valley on Saturday, according to local media reports. Panken served as the 12th president of HUC-JIR, a seminary founded in Cincinnati in 1875. SC

A Chicago-area chef who once appeared on the Food Network and dubbed himself the “architect of flavor” died Saturday of an apparent heart attack, according to the owners of the restaurant where he worked. “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the sudden passing of our friend & colleague, Chef Judson Todd Allen, culinary lead of Taste 222,” according to a tweet from Taste 222. “We’ll never forget his passion for food in creating our menu and highlighting the flavors & spices he loved.” SC (edit: One of my very good friends who just so happens to live in Chi-Town and just so happens to splurge on fine cuisine around the globe and at home and just so happens to DP said 'I've never heard of him or his restaurant'. LOL)

And all that AFTER the actual race was completed.

It's official. Last night I was verified by Guinness. SC

Why didn’t she just sit in her fekkin seat?

That could be a reference to his many pit stops having to urinate more often.

I may be able to help you bag a Scots-Protestant check and check, though my case for the former is weak and the latter weaker.

Nawaz: I didn’t realize Cow had her, I thought we both only had Bishop Quinn. Well as stated a meaningless wash as she’s on both teams. I would expect her to perish before June, so we should both get hits. Pratley: ““The cancer team were brilliant and pulled no punches. At best I’ve got a few weeks. You have to play the cards your dealt and I’ve been a lot luckier than most so I can’t complain.” (Apr 27) LaChance: In bad stage 4 shape but maybe I’ve been duped and his chemo is going to keep him afloat for a few months yet. Sounded worse to me, but he has a June 6 fundraiser planned, not that future fundraisers for Brandon Jenkins panned out. Quinn: a wash, he’s on both teams. Probably a mistake for right now by both of us, but the Bishop thing worked for me last month gotta ride that horse! McEwen: 6 months to live in December. This should be her month. Another with a June fundraiser planned though. Hard to pass up age tie break pojnts (21) should she die. Bowlen: OK who do you believe, the renowned sports writer with 3 close family sources says Pat’s circling the drain, or Denver Bronco mgt who immediately refuted the claim as nonsense? Goodall: Assuming a hit, at 104 his age makes him a non-hit in essence. Take what I can get though. Killian: was looking to catch lightning in a bottle a second time ala Brandon Jenkins complications post- heart surgery. Didn’t consider Sean #1 until this blurb about new complications from donated liver popped up. http://www.blabbermouth.net/news/vio-lence-singer-sean-killian-receiving-treatment-for-post-surgical-complications-following-liver-transplant/ Dabney: As stated when I turned in my list “he’s an Oct death but I’ve run out of names”. Manan: Probably an overrated mistake I keep buying into. Cox: I don’t think he’s going to pull through. OTOH his clan don’t seem the type to pull plugs on a comatose person who may be brain dead soon. But has to roll with him.

Carlos Carvalho, 47, was shooting scenes at a British expat’s game farm when the giraffe, called Gerald, swung its neck – hitting him on his head and sending him flying. He died of the injuries. SC

Ok hard to believe this escaped notice. Animal Antic but I’ve got something better for that today. After stopping to go to the toilet on his way home from a wedding, Prabhu Bhatara is said to have spotted an injured bear, so decided a selfie would be a great idea. According to forest rangers Bhatara was killed on the spot. Short video doesn’t show much, but longer versions are out there. SC

He has a point though. I mean it could be for a day, weekender maybe. Just to satisfy citizenship requirements etc. It’ll have to be in the morning though—like all Irish weddings—that way if it don’t work out the whole day ain’t shot.

Wait....WHAT?! Another Louisianan? -
If Dr. David Goodall is incapable of proving his sanity the next few days, at 104 he may well be the oldest insane air passenger ever.
-
And here we go....as predicted. “Australia's oldest scientist and renowned academic David Goodall, must be judged to be of sound mind before he can end his life with a voluntary assisted dying program in Switzerland next week.” But you see, there’s a Catch. Catch 22. SC

I didn’t like my chances after reviewing DCs team. But I ‘should’ have two in the can (my Gaelic Athletic Assoc dude and my fisherman). Nawaz won’t exit that hospital alive, whether it’s in May remains to be seen. But looking at the four teams as a whole I felt it very possible someone could get four hits and lose (on tie breaker, or even 5 hits). Could be me SC

I’m debating if Nichelle Nichols qualifies for team Gris Gris. Decided no for 2018, but we need some lower hanging fruit so maybe amend our ‘strict requirements’. SC

My ex-wife had a branch of her family tree with the surname Born. I found the headstone of one of the long lost Borns (a teenager as I vaguely recollect) under some brambles and long forgotten. Do I even need to tell you what a fucking bitch it was trying to do genealogical research on someone named Born? SC

Shades of our previous match with Joey, giving up a virtual open net with your April 30 stroke victim. Bad news for msc is this is teaching us all to wait till the final moments to submit a lineup card.
