The Santa Ana winds have arrived in west Texas. (20-30 mph constant) What you see there is sand. Fun to breathe, fun to eat, fun to stare at. SC (edit: PS, msc you can see my internet/phone plight late last week. When I say remote, I mean remote).

Don't hold back, say how you really feel.

Former Central Connecticut State University president Jack Miller died Monday morning, according to university officials. Miller was president from 2005 to 2016, succeeded by President Zulma Toro. Richard Judd, CCSU’s president before Miller, said he was sad to hear about Miller’s passing. SC

Dave Behrens, a writer who was at Newsday from 1968 to 2004, was a part of the team that in 1974 won a Pulitzer Prize for the groundbreaking series “The Heroin Trail.” Behrens died March 24 after a brief illness. He was 84. SC

Bob Beattie, who coached the United States men's skiing team to its first Olympic medals in the 1960s, has died. He was 85. As U.S. coach from 1961 to 1969, Beattie -- known as "Beats" or "Coach" to friends -- helped Billy Kidd (silver) and Jimmie Heuga (bronze) to medals in the men's slalom at the 1964 Winter Olympics. Stricken Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri, who suffered serious, lasting brain damage after collapsing during a friendly, has been transferred out of intensive care, and can breathe on his own, the club said Tuesday. "He is no longer in an induced coma and has full respiratory functions," the club said, in a statement issued in the name of Nouri's family. But it added soberly that "his condition further remains unchanged from previous updates and is stable, but with serious and permanent brain damage." Well this is a serious blow to Cancel My Appointments DDP team, but frankly I don't root for death, it will come when it will come, and I'm happy to hear he has had limited progress. That said, I think it's time for a joke: What is an Ajax fan's favourite vegetable? SC

Former health secretary Andrew Lansley has revealed he is being treated for bowel cancer. SC

From an unknown a week ago to one of the names heating up the DL pages, (Ret.) Bishop David Foley is a couple photos from March 27, as he was on his way to a retirement home for priests. No way of knowing before or after, but the order of the tweeted pix would make the first photo a 'before'. He's aware and acknowledging people around him. In the second photo, presumably less than an hour later, Bishop Foley (bald head on the far left, miter musta fell off) can't seem to hold his head up. Is he silently praying while everyone else in the photo isn't? Catholics do everything together....kneel, stand, etc. So I suggest he's having a go at a quick nap. Maybe after 90 years or whatever talk of God bores him. Maybe he is physically unable to do the simple task of staying alert, awake, and on task with the arduous chore of keeping his head aloft. You decide. SC

So far Cardinal Roger Etchegaray (ret.) remains the only elderly person of note who has had the death knell broken hip and seemingly gotten over it. He had God on his side though. [ok let's limit my comment to folks 88 and over (this ropes in Karolos), as we've already beaten the argument to death what 'elderly' means; and don't resurrect THAT discussion here, cunto!] SC

Politics on a small scale, but worth a look-see for Cup hopefuls or mid year DPs where applicable maybe. Former Big Island (Hawaii) Mayor Billy Kenoi wrote a Facebook message to friends, family, clients and students that a rare form of bone cancer he was diagnosed with three years ago has recently returned SC

Almost started a thread for him. May still. Here's the update after 12 hours of surgery. Video/interview included...He looks a mess....the surgery sounds awful. He can't have a year, certainly not 2020. A 2019 LOCK. HOF player 4x Super Bowl QB, a legit name for the DL imho. SC -
Heard on Dr. Drew podcast: "Flip or Flop" star Tarek El Moussa says battling two types of cancer (testicular + thyroid) and navigating a difficult divorce left him a broken man. SC

A lisp-talkin cowboy named Seth Got on his horse and 'rode Weth' Halfway through his ride Seth's horse up and died "Now you're juth like Elithabeth'. Elizabeth Ebert, who rose to queenly prominence within the chivalrous ranks of cowboy poetry, died on March 20, after breaking a hip. She was 93, and cognizant enough to remark, just hours before she died, that it was her wedding anniversary. SC

Here's one from my hometown. Detroit Police Commissioner Derrick B. Sanders, 59, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 31. Sanders, who worked as a business agent and trustee for the Operating Engineers 324 labor union, began serving as an at-large member of the police commission in December 2015 after being appointed by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. The Detroit Police Commission is a civilian oversight board comprised of four appointed and seven elected members tasked with guiding department policy, spending and investigating citizen complaints, among other duties. You DO understand all those celebs are celebs and have big phat celebrity wallets and purses. My relatives and the hoi polio I sat day after day in pubs with, well there isn't a safety net like these people named above have. I'll give you that rich people live longer than poor people. Imagine that! SC

I speak from a bit of experience when I say I think you've been rather generous with a 65-75 spread. I'd knock that down a decade 55-65. Keep in mind many drinkers smoke, and if they don't they're in a pub filled with smoke. It's a toxic hell. Add a shitty diet and I've seen 65 as the high end for most stalwart patrons. My dad and granddad both drank themselves into the grave before 50. Your granddad did well, my friend. SC

Ahh, CaptainC....that's one of those names in my Rolodex no one is supposed to pay attention to. bah!
