Boy, I had forgotten about this band and song -- another in that line of 'Blood Sweat and Tears' sound alikes, like my go to karaoke song by Ides of March, 'Vehicle'. Maybe I need to do this one at karaoke (In typical DP fashion, prior to singing the song I actually DO announce that a member of the band has died if in fact that has happened....gives me a reason to do the song). Magic Johnson, And Other Basketball Players

Rollie Massimino, the coach who guided Villanova to one of college basketball’s most improbable national titles, died Wednesday at the age of 82. Massimino had been battling lung cancer and reportedly had recently entered a hospice care facility near his Florida home. Even though Massimino won more than 800 games in 48 years as a college head coach, he’ll always be best known for one momentous victory in particular. Massimino’s 1985 Villanova team capped off an unfathomable run from No. 8 seeds to national champions by upsetting Patrick Ewing-led Georgetown in the title game. SC -

Sucks to post some of these. Nationwide News has learned that the one-year-old son of the former Member of Parliament for Western St Mary, the PNP’s Jolyan Silvera drowned in a pool at his home yesterday. Justin, who turned one on August 11, was found in the pool shortly before midday yesterday. Member of Parliament for Manchester North Western, Mikael Phillips, who’s also the child’s godfather, says the incident happened at Mr. Silvera’s Stony Hill home in St Andrew. SC -

OK I know it means piss over there, but somehow us Yanks have turned St. Patrick's Day into a national drunken holiday. Strike March 17th. SC

I remember hearing of his demise and feeling quite saddened. Still own my Beer Hunter and Malt Whiskey Companion books, which anyone worth a fuck has on their vestibule leaning up against--and acting as supplements to--The Bible. SC (EDIT: I must say about the chosen photo, anyone wearing a tie with a picture of themselves, even if it was for promotional use, is narcissistic).

A couple of feel-shit stories for today, one from my hometown of Breaux Bridge, LA. - A 41-year-old woman who was trying to save herself and her child died on Tuesday afternoon after being swept away by floodwaters in Beaumont, Texas, police said. Her 3-year-old daughter, who survived, was found “clinging” to her mother’s body. - In Breaux Bridge, 38-year-old Francine Gotch and her 3-year-old daughter, Nevaeh Alexander, were crushed to death between the collapsing ceiling and floor in the bed where they'd been sleeping. This occurred cuz of a tornado (brief film footage of it forming on Youtube). -
Not a veteran, but WWII related. Prominent nuclear disarmament campaigner Sumiteru Taniguchi, who was delivering mail in Nagasaki when the United States dropped an atomic bomb in 1945, died on Wednesday aged 88. Taniguchi, once considered a front-runner for the Nobel Peace Prize, died of cancer at a hospital in the southwestern Japanese city, according to Nihon Hidankyo, a group that represents survivors of the atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The then-postman, aged only 16 when the attack happened in the closing days of World War 2, suffered horrific burns to his back and left arm that took years to heal properly. He had been riding his bicycle some 1.8 kilometres from the epicentre of the blast. Wonder if they're going to cremate him? The postman always burns twice... SC

Thatcher replied to a topic 3 hours ago Bobby Boyd, NFL cornerback for the Baltimore Colts (1960-1968), has died aged 79. His final game was the Super Bowl in 1969. --------------------------------- Looking for a different obit on the NFL Bobby Boyd to publish, I came across another Bobby Boyd we missed. (From June 30, 2017): "The country music industry is mourning the loss of a great songwriter this week. Bobby Boyd, the writer behind hits, like “Two of a Kind Workin’ on a Full House” and “Working Man’s PHD,” has passed away at the age of 69. Boyd got his start in music way back in the 1960s and ’70s. During that time, he performed at a club in Chattanooga almost nightly. Eventually, he wound up as a staff writer for Jimmy Bowen, writing several of his hit songs while employed there. Over the years, he wrote songs for artists like Garth Brooks, Aaron Tippin, Martina McBride, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and George Jones, just to name a few. Boyd was such a talented songwriter that he was also able to stray outside the confines of country music. In the ’60s and ’70s, he teamed up with Little Richard, The Platters and The Coasters as well as several other notable artists. SC (Note: We have also posted a Bob Boyd, men's basketball coach at USC during the UCLA John Wooden era).

#48: This one is personal "The Toledo Zoo is sad to report the death of our long-time resident, J.J. the orangutan. He died at the advanced age of 45 over the weekend from heart failure. J.J., whose formal name is Jiggs Junior, was a beloved member of the Toledo Zoo for decades, during which millions of visitors enjoyed his gentle disposition, remarkable intelligence and endearing interactions." ___________ One of my favorite zoo friends ever. (About 25 years ago)...He sat up against the glass and I put my palm on the glass and he tried touching my hand through the glass and put his hand of mine. True story. From that time orangutans have been one of my favorite animals. Sorry to hear J.J. is gone. SC

A racer at the Northern Michigan Speedway died over the weekend after having a heart attack in the middle of a race. Meh. James Brown was overshadowed by dying on Christmas, and few paying attention to the news cycle. I think many felt sad about it later, but as a momentary event it lacked any legs whatsoever. I don't recall Saddam 'falling' around Christmastime but I suffer from Falk-itis. Only Saddam stuff I remember is him being found in a hole and that was late spring/early summer as I recall but again that may be Falk talking. SC

As you can imagine this sign is designed for semis (tractor-trailers, 18-wheelers, whatever nomenclature you prefer) to pass under without incident. Thus, you're looking at like 10' of water on that highway. This is a loop onto Interstate-10, which is the way I drive home from west Texas oil rigs. We should be rigging down in 9 days or so, and seems I'll be looking for another route. SC -

Former college great and NFL player Rickey Dixon was diagnosed with ALS a couple years ago. In six years in the NFL, Dixon played for the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Raiders. He spent five seasons with the Bengals, and one with the Los Angeles Raiders. Anyway, there was an ESPN special on him yesterday. SC
