ANOTHER music legend. 2017 please quit taking all these music legends from us. (headline calls him a legend....however opening sentence refers to him as a pioneer. I mean it'll be a fekkin national holiday) SC -
We always laugh at the obits, particularly in the music industry, zealously and casually throwing the epithet 'legend' out there. If only there were dozens of music 'legends' lmao. And here we have another one. Legend Kenny Shields of the legendary band Streetheart from that legendary mecca of legendary music, Winnipeg. Contains a video of them singing their legendary hits. This one was especially flippant, calling Shields 'the Mick Jaggar of Winnipeg'. I guess every town has one. SC

Maine philanthropist and former Dexter Shoe Co. executive Peter Alfond died Monday from malaria contracted during a recent trip to Africa, according to news accounts and his family's foundation. He was 65. A scion of one of Maine’s best-known families, Alfond contracted the disease while traveling with his family. Alfond for many years supported educational and healthcare causes through the Peter Alfond Foundaiton — including the donation of $4 million to MaineGeneral Medial Center, to establish the Healthy Living Resource Center, which encourages healthier eating and exercise. What luck, donates $$$ to a medical center and dies from some half-ass disease in a place that doesn't have one. SC

The female hippo, who lived at the Philippine zoo since it opened in 1959, was found dead in her enclosure on Friday. She was 65 years old, and was believed to be the oldest hippopotamus in captivity. (Her age can’t be officially, independently verified as the zoo lost Bertha’s records.) SC

#34: Surely this was an agonizingly slow death. The Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero reported Monday that its two-toed sloth named "Rayne" was found dead in his enclosure on Sunday morning. Rayne was put on public exhibit at the zoo in June. Zookeepers found him dead during their early morning rounds. They believe the four-year-old sloth passed away sometime Saturday night of a possible heart attack. SC
