Constantine the Great rolled into Byzantine, renamed it after himself, and started writing songs about it until his death in 337 (1,680 years ago), age 65. Constantinople would also die, but not till 1930.

Mt Everest is flexing it's muscle this weekend. Francesco Marchetti, 54, was climbing down to a lower camp from the North Col route on Sunday morning when he died at an altitude of about 7500 metres. He was suffering from altitude sickness. Mr Marchetti, known as Frank, was one of three people who died on Everest on Sunday, local time. American doctor Roland Yearwood and Slovak mountaineer Vladimir Strba also died in separate incidents near the summit of Everest on Sunday. SC

#23: A sea lion was recently captured on camera biting a girl's dress around her lower waist as she sat at the edge of on the dock at Steveston Fisherman Wharf in Richmond, British Columbia and dragging her backwards into the ocean. She immediately surfaced, while a man jumped in and rescued her. Her family soon whisked her away. A Simon Fraser University student filmed the terrifying encounter. He said no one was hurt. SC

Former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and ex-governor of Iowa Tom Vilsack's 6-year-old granddaughter died Friday morning. Ella Vilsack died from a sudden illness (other articles said flu-related). SC -
An American climber died on Sunday (May 21) on his way to the summit of Mount Everest, expedition organisers said, the latest death to mar the ongoing climbing season. The 50-year-old mountaineer died close to the Balcony, a small platform above the 8,000-metre mark considered the mountain's "death zone". A search is also underway for an Indian climber who lost contact after reaching the summit of the world's tallest mountain on Saturday. Ravi Kumar, 26, was climbing down from the 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) summit and got separated from his guide near the Balcony. The Nepali guide was found unconscious at Camp 4, just below 8,000 metres, with severe frostbite. SC

#22: A professional big game hunter from Tzaneen, Theunis Botha, 51, died on Friday afternoon during a hunt in Gwai, in Zimbabwe, when a member of his group fired at a storming elephant cow and the animal fell on him. A group of hunters had gone for a walk on Friday afternoon when they suddenly came across a breeding herd of elephants. Three elephant cows stormed the hunters and Botha shot at them. A fourth cow stormed them from the side and one of the hunters shot her after she’d lifted Botha with her trunk. The shot was fatal and as the cow collapsed, she fell on Botha. SC

And frankly, he's a fair obit risk on top of all that. Like I said I just researched him yesterday, found squat. Not sure he is getting media coverage presently that equates to an obit later. But as I say, the only people guaranteed of not getting an obit are the living. SC

So I'm confused (what's new). Senor Hayden rides a bicycle? I am asking due to his inclusion in a thread strictly about auto racing. OH....I see....Motocross.....motorcycles. Got it. Nice photo in the article then SMFH. No, back to semi-confusion (dont mind the numerous edits). OK, so he WAS riding a bike. But he IS a motorcycle racer. GOT IT. I need coffee or more sleep. SC

The families of Simon and Feek laid on Paul van Zandvliet's bed, held hands and took photos?

I've still never heard of her. I won't bother to search, as I would normally declare all indignantly 'she wasn't discussed on these boards' when I suspect she was. I feel better having never heard of any friend of Lady Gaga. SC

Interesting only as in that I JUST researched Mr. Butts (he being on one of my teams) along with a few others, and in Butts' case I came up empty. Where the hell did he get $ for the whipple procedure? That said, studies I've chased down show the procedure adds about 18 months to one's life, take that useless info for what it's worth (worth a punt this year, but not next, I'm a sucker LOL).| SC (edit: forgot to put a sad face for msc ruining my day so early on. Shame on msc for making me forlorn and melancholy. (edit 2: please excuse my asinine question re: funding the procedure [see bold])

Only he should be allowed to say that seeing as he married her.

First language Welsh speakers were diagnosed with dementia about three years later than those who spoke only English, a Bangor University study has shown. There are about 45,000 people living with dementia in Wales. Dementia studies lecturer Dr Catrin Hedd Jones said the reasons behind the difference in diagnosis time could be due to a range of factors, but most likely your average healthy Welshman naturally sounds like a drooling dimentite, so picking out an ill person is trying at best. Eyehategod's singer vocalist Mike IX Williams recent update indicates he is recovering since his December liver transplant, much to the dismay of a couple of my DP teams. SC

Seen Any Good Films Lately?
Sir Creep replied to Cowboy Ronnie's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
I feel ya. I gravitate towards low- or medium-budget works that have critical acclaim of some sort (I'm a sucker for a DVD cover with some award symbol as a winner/entry for one film festival or another). I will watch/rent my share of Hollywood flix, generally after the Oscars (catch up on why someone won an award e.g.), but prefer the former. I like foreign language films as well ("A Separation" (2011) is one of my top 5 films ever). And as an old punk rocker (lol) I appreciate experimental works as well. I'll have to think about animal grunts, though. SC (edit: I have a friend who writes professional reviews for horror movie genre, and gets movies sent to him for free. I said if he gets Aaaaaah he has to send it to me when he's done -
One way to look at it. The other is that SC was the only dummy who didn't correctly interpret that Qureshi was indeed recovering, and just caught a lucky break. Granted, Nabeel is still breathing so leaving him off the list remains the right call until further notice. I also kept the faith on Mo Haque and that appears to be a miscue, as well as a good handful of others who I see now are likely to be 2018 participants. That said, I appear to have 3-4 entries (Qureshi, Elias, Christie) who I'm hoping will help me yet in 2017. SC

I just posted Viktor Garbotko's obit earlier today. As I said on the DP I run 'I didn't know Joe Garagiola was a cosmonaut. It's uncanny.
