    The dead of 2016

Santiago Erevia, a Vietnam War veteran and retired mail carrier who had been denied the United States' highest military honor for 45 years because he was Hispanic, died on Tuesday in San Antonio. He was 69. The cause was a heart attack, said his wife, Letica Lopez Erevia. Mr. Erevia, who single-handedly wiped out four enemy bunkers while his comrades lay wounded. SC

    Missing In Action

I presume this thread is generally for more 'famous' folks, but this case being exceptional (in it's timeframe), I'm posting it: A woman who went missing from her home in Laurel, Indiana in the 1970s now has a chance to connect with the daughter she left behind years ago. On Thursday, Lula Ann Gillespie-Miller, who went missing in 1974, was found living in a small town in south Texas. According to Indiana State Police, she went missing at age 28, shortly after giving birth to her third child. Police said she signed her children over to her parents in Laurel, saying she felt she was too young to be a mother at the time. Now 69 yrs old, her family’s last contact with her came from a letter they received in 1975, postmarked in Richmond, Indiana. SC

    Death Anniversary Thread

Although widely popular country artist Buck Owens died 10 years ago today (3/25)... I pay homage to the century mark, and 100 years for Ishi, the Last of the Mohicans (well, the Yahi tribe).

    Derby Dead Pool 2016

It's terribly disappointing, I have 11 that's right ELEVEN hits on my Shadow List before Easter, but only 5 in DDP. And maybe 6 elsewhere. I had the right names but didn't put enough stock into those I thought had a fighting chance for 2017 and instead bought into I don't know what for 2016 names. Just mad at myself *kicks the dirt* SC

    Political Frailty

It's a local story but indulge me, it's my hometown in Louisiana (basically). Former state Sen. Edgar “Sonny” Mouton Jr., a popular politician and attorney who represented Lafayette in the Legislature for 16 years and made an unsuccessful bid for governor, died early Thursday. Mouton, 86, also served as legal counsel to former Gov. Dave Treen and briefly as an adviser to Edwin Edwards at the beginning of the former governor’s third term in 1985. He ran for Governor in 1979. SC (PS: pronounced MOO-tawn in good Cajun)

    Stranger Than Death

Hard to describe, but I was in rush hour traffic driving through the lowest road (underpass) in one of those cloverleaf things where highways meet, 5:15pm. Some beat up pickup truck comes falling from the sky about 30' above and lands on the car next to and behind me, killing the driver instantly. (The pickup truck somehow missed an exit, hit the grass strip and slid at 60mph from up above, again too difficult to explain. I missed being killed by literally 1.5 seconds, and went back through my day to thank God that every action I did I didn't pause for 1.5 seconds and put myself where that car was that got squashed. I saw the entire thing in my side/rearview mirror. Ended up, coincidentally, that the guy that got killed was 29, had a young child, and was the friend of one of my ex-wife's co-workers. He was despondent the next day and Mrs. Creep asked what was wrong, he said his buddy got squashed and she said 'Sir Creep was in the next car and saw the whole thing'. SirC

  12. L.A., Cali: Hiroshi Motohashi was angry with the management of the Studio City sushi restaurant, so instead of a tip, the 46-year-old man dropped a 13-foot-long snake in the middle of the restaurant — then slithered out. SC

UFOs, Space Aliens and the like

Since we're on the UFO topic..... A "flying saucer UFO” that was displayed for decades on a corner of the wall outside the International UFO Museum & Research Center building on South Main Street in Roswell, New Mexico, went missing on Sunday mysteriously. The silver-colored mock-up of a flying saucer UFO made of fiberglass and stainless steel had served as mascot for the museum since it opened in 1992. SC

Only Famous For Being Ill And Dying

Auburn Univ freshman (well, not till next year) Brodarious Hamm -- no relation to Mia or summat -- recently diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and is undergoing chemo hoping to be ready for Spring football. If he thinks his future is so bright he has to wear shades, don't blame him; blame his doctor. "At first, I was scared,” Hamm said. “But I talked with the doctor and he said I’d be alright. He was just like, ‘This is nothing to worry about. Believe in the treatment and believe in God and everything will be alright.’ Why do I think Mr. Hamm misheard what was said? Either way, seeing as he has nothing to worry about, another name for my 'nothing to worry about/I beat cancer' theme team. In fact there's a team NAME in that doctor's quote somewhere. SC

Horrifying photos (and videos!) out of India show a wild elephant tossing a man into the air and trampling him to death in West Bengal on Monday, just a day after several other people in the state suffered a similar fate. The previous day, three elephants reportedly killed a group of four other people. Authorities tranquilized a male elephant, which later died, but an adult female and a calf ran away. SC
