The Fringes Of Fame/family Of The Famous

Former Manchester City star’s girlfriend killed herself at a popular beauty spot after being diagnosed with a life-changing bowel condition, an inquest heard. Tragic Faye Howard sent a final text to goalkeeper Billy O’Brien after previously revealing she felt “embarrassed” and like a “burden”. The 23-year-old was later found hanged from a tree in a park near Altrincham, Greater Manchester, after O’Brien raised the alarm. An inquest in Stockport heard how bank worker Faye had been diagnosed with Pelvic Floor Dyssynergia, which means her muscles contracted making it difficult for her to go to the toilet. Her weight had plummeted before her death and she had been prescribed anti-depressants in the months leading up to her death on June 29. Looked but didn't see mention of this....and seemed a shame not to post so here 'tis. SC

    Golf: The 19th Hole

Former Ryder Cup golfer Tommy Horton has died at the age of 76. Horton, who lived in Jersey, played for Great Britain and Ireland in the 1975 and 1977 Ryder Cups - both of which were won by the United States. He also won four European Tour events and 23 events on the European Seniors Tour - topping its money list in 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999. He was taken ill at the Royal Jersey Golf Club on Thursday and died shortly after in hospital. SC

    Baseball

Tracy Stallard, who pitched seven seasons in the big leagues and was best known for giving up Roger Maris’ record-setting 61st home run in 1961, has died at the age of 80. While pitching for the Boston Red Sox, Stallard served up the fateful home run to Maris on Oct. 1, 1961 at Yankee Stadium as the slugger eclipsed Babe Ruth’s single-season mark of 60 homers. The Red Sox lost that game 1-0 and it was the only hit Maris managed against Stallard in seven career at-bats. SC

Interesting that he was on a short list. I can't find anything that would have brought attention to him, but I don't have your research skills, D.I. SC

So How's Your 2018 Shortlist Looking?

I thought by now I'd have had time to really get at it, but seems it's not going to happen soon. May not put together much of anything in time. Alas...

Albert Kahn, an architect who designed much of the skyline and factories that was my hometown of Detroit - 75 years ago (73). I'm adding a photo of the Packard plant, which sat idle for a few decades, and maybe 20 years ago became a graffiti-riddled storage facility and paint-ball shooting gallery. I believe it was finally razed about 5 years ago. Sad, but that's how we roll in the D. SC

    The Weather

So like we got a couple inches of snow in the desert in west Texas (Toyah, TX for those playing at home). And parts of southern Texas, and apparently this morning over in Acadiana (south Louisiana), and of course a single snowflake shuts down schools there. Hopefully my daughter catching flakes on her tongue like normal non-suthnah children do. I'll edit/post a couple pix shortly. SC (BTW they're calling for temps in the low 40s in Miami. Seems there's a "blue Jew" joke in there somewhere -- Send your complaint letters to Paul Bearer.)

Magic Johnson, And Other Basketball Players

Oh look, Lauren Hill II. Redshirt freshman guard Paulina Castro set on an unexpected journey in December of 2016 when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of cancer that attacks the immune system. News of this caliber is not easy for anyone to receive, but Castro’s positive mentality, along with encouragement from her family, teammates and coaches, made her journey inspirational to everyone who knows her story. Blah blah blah....story goes on to talk about her playing women's basketball at a small Iowa university. Is it interesting to anyone else Lauren Hill's name isn't mentioned? How quickly she was forgotten. In fact, I couldn't think of her name lol had to google it just now. SC

    Journalists

Les Whitten, who shared a byline with Jack Anderson on a nationally syndicated newspaper column that mercilessly exposed Washington’s foibles and frauds and who once even spied on J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the F.B.I., died on Saturday in Adelphi, Md. He was 89. The cause was sepsis, his son Les Whitten III said. SC

    ALS/MND/other degenerative diseases

Renee Zellweger (or some creature going by that name) attended the ALS Golden West Chapter Hosts Champions For Care And A Cure in support of her friend Nanci Ryder -- who the article says is "BWR co-founder and power publicist Nanci Ryder." Nanci revealed her ALS diagnosis back in 2014. So the possibility of an obit may be slightly better than zero. SC

Where Will The Next School Massacre Be?

Multiple people are dead following a shooting at a high school in New Mexico. Local authorities said two victims lost their lives at Aztec High School Thursday, the Associated Press reported. The shooter has also been confirmed as dead. The victims were students, but it was not immediately clear whether the shooter attended Aztec High School. SC

    Please list your karaoke standards

The one and only time my ex-wife performed karaoke, it was to Fiona Apple's "Sleep To Dream" which is certainly obtuse and dreary and surprised me it was even on the machine (also tells you when this happened lol). Fiona was like her favourite artist. She did a decent enough rendition as I recall. Singing wasn't the issue, just doing it in public. SC

    American Football Players

Former New England Patriots coach Ron Meyer, who might be best remembered for his role in the 1982 “snowplow” game, has died, it was announced Tuesday. He was 76. Meyer also coached in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts and in the college ranks at Southern Methodist and UNLV. SC Snow Plow Game highlights.... 2:00 video http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d82a3b1ae/Films-Encore-The-snowplow-game Meyer was coach at SMU when the Pony Express received the death penalty, which took them from a top 10 program to still trying to recover this many years later (I think they went to their first bowl game since then just a year or two ago). George Boyd Willie Sr., who passed away Tuesday at the age of 92 in his home in Leupp after a long illness, really took to heart his oath to keep the fact he was a Navajo Code Talker a secret. According to family members, he didn’t tell them he was a Code Talker until 1997, more than 25 years after the federal government officially informed the world of their existence. SC
