    Female 'Firsts'

So many obits proclaim 'she was the first woman to (insert accomplishment)', that these neophyte ladies deserve their own place in DL. (African Americans sans 'americans' will be getting one too, probably by week's end.) So with that.... Sunset “Sunny” Hale, the first woman in polo history to win the U.S. Open in a male-dominated sport, died Sunday night in Norman, Okla. Hale, 48, died due to complications from cancer. The world’s greatest women’s polo player founded the Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT) that opened the door and broke down barriers for other girls and women to pursue their passion. She helped revive the U.S. Women’s Open in 2011. SC
  4. Let's lump all these folks into one thread. Not all of them are past NFL players, though a chunk of them are (Steve Gleason, Tim Shaw, OJ Brigance, etc). Lest we forget the Pete Frates of the world, Jason Becker or even Stephen Hawking (though he's covered plenty elsewhere), or the late Sam Shepard. Not every affliction needs it's own thread, but this one is pretty well-defined and the progression easy enough to follow. And with that, a Tim Shaw update. He looks good enough, not even in a wheelchair at this point, so I think we can give him a pass to 2019 before we need to check in on him. SC

    Ironic Deaths

One of my little sister’s best friends (about 10 years old at the time) was walking to Catechism and when crossing the main road to get to church she dropped her Catechism book in the road, turned to get it, and was run over and killed. @Grim Up North I chalk this up to something along the lines of your grandfather. More questions than answers. SC

Reggie the Campus Corgi swam in the Pacific Ocean, hiked through Zion National Park and flew on airplanes across the country. There was no place he was happier, though, than walking through the University of Michigan campus to brighten the days of students and staff alike, Reggie’s owner Michael P. Sola said. The red-and-white Pembroke Welsh corgi, whose presence as a greeter on the UM campus and in downtown Ann Arbor made him a minor celebrity, died unexpectedly on Dec. 20, 2020, at the age of 10. Sola confirmed Reggie’s passing on his Facebook page last week.

Isn’t there a thread for Oscar discussion? Since half of not 70% of those who were in the montage died in 2020, said discussion here is beyond misplaced. SC
