Source claims to be great great nephew. Dickie Rooks, former Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Bristol City player, reportedly dead: Awaiting the usual confirmations. If true, I think he's a current Hare's Pool pick. Also a former DDP pick for Blueberry Crumble in 2022, so List of the Missed @Death Impends if and when something more solid comes along: https://www.derbydeadpool.co.uk/deadpool2022/celebs_R.html#rooks9d022

    Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Hurricanes, Mudslides

Cheers, it's not something I pay much attention to, living in a country where your earthquakes are rare and having forgotten everything about tectonic plates I ever learned in Geography (might have been my second year of Secondary School, I gave the subject up). So that was a looong time ago. I guess I see the reports on here and on the tellybox and am more aware of them.

Unusual East Coast earthquake - 4.8 off New York. Is it me, or are earthquakes getting really common these days?

    Benjamin Netanyahu

Netanyahu is imo putting the people of Israel in more danger. That is unforgiveable, given what happened on October 7th. He seems hell bent on bringing Lebanon, Hezbollah and Iran into this and the attack on Syrian soil? He may be the destruction of Israel, not its saviour and that is an horrific prospect as well.

    Benjamin Netanyahu

I simply do not accept this is a war in its purest sense. This is an operation to kill terrorists. I'm seeing no organised army in Palestine which justifies the horrors going on there. The only thing I can draw equivalence to is this. For example, the folk who blew up the London Underground and the London bus on 7 July 2005 were from Leeds and Aylesbury. Now let's assume the British intelligence had evidence that there were other members of a cell in those locations. What would they do? A. Have a special operation to seek out those suspects and bring them to justice. Or B. Bomb the shit out of Leeds and Aylesbury in the hope of killing the suspects associated with the attack. The casualties among civilians and the malnutrition and starvation just are not justified. You send your operatives into the tunnels, you seek out your enemy and keep civilian death to a minimum. Netanyahu's history of course is quite different. He seems quite content with indiscriminate death and destruction which is not being very successful in releasing hostages or targeting terrorists. The hateful talk of right wing settlers in Israel looking forward to having beach front properties in Gaza after this operation feeds this narrative. This Lavender thing is just more evidence of a "don't care who dies" policy.

    Benjamin Netanyahu

It's like....something a terrorist state would do. What kind of insanity is this?

    Benjamin Netanyahu

I can see international support for him begin to drain away after the murder of the World Central Kitchen aid workers, including three Britons. I still see no apology from Netanyahu or the IDF. I don't see how, given the aid workers were in clear communication with IDF forces and the logo of the WCK was on the top of the vehicle, repeated drone attacks occurred. Leave him to Iran.

Death notice for former British High Commissioner to Belize, later to Barbados, Gordon Baker: https://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/marketplace/advert/baker-notices_56548 Wiki (mention): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_high_commissioners_of_the_United_Kingdom_to_Belize Wiki (mention): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_high_commissioners_of_the_United_Kingdom_to_Barbados Yeah, I probably wouldn't have mentioned him, except a telegram (remember them?) written by him in 1997 when representing Belize was leaked to The Times. That expressed that there were rumours about Lord Michael Ashcroft's business dealings "cast a shadow over his reputation which ought not to be ignored". That, along with other revelations, caused Ashcroft no end of trouble a wee bit later on leading to him suing and settling with The Times over various reports regarding certain issues which can be read on Ashcroft's Wiki - I have no wish to express them here, obviously. Anyhow, Baker was caught up inadvertently in that whole thing.

    Aristocrats

Oh yes indeedy, the stories of hereditaries whose family have gambled or squandered the wealth their ancestors left are rife. I'm not saying they are all in a lovely position, and a lot of property goes into disrepair or is transferred to the State in due course. But the fact they may have to work a little harder or sell off some family heirlooms to that guy off Salvage Hunters doesn't detract from the fact that these folk get first dibs on all the breaks a Government can give them. Christ, the State will step in and rebuild their properties for them if it were to burn down. 'Mon, we all know how it works.

Absolutely I'm saying that. They just have different things to complain about, like their yacht club meeting has been cancelled, or they can't get dinner at The Fat Duck.

Weeeelllll. I think it's easy to be nice when you inherit huge landholdings from which you derive a merry income, knowing you'll pass it on to your kids relatively tax free because it is held in trust or by a nominated company. Meanwhile, Mrs Pensioner who got that house when her husband died gets her family smashed with a 40 per cent inheritance tax bill. No doubt this chap did a lot of good in his area though. Just a pity they have all the privileges with little of the responsibility we all have in our lives.
