Tory party appointee tells elected representatives there shall be no referendum this side of the next General Election.
-
Spectre of Election re-runs after Electoral Commission fine the Tories for accounting irregularities. On a side note, £70,000 fine? What incentive is that to a political party worth millions to stop effectively rigging elections in certain areas? Anyway, look forward to the named and shamed MPs being put to the vote.

Who do we send to a famine stricken area? Boris Johnson, butterball. Who's next? Eric Pickles? Patrick McLoughlin? Will we have a fundraiser hosted by James Corden, Peter Kay and Nick Frost? -

Have to say biggest enjoyment for me today was John McDonnell's characterisation of the PM on Budget Day as "guffawing like a feeding seal". -
I just don't understand UK politicians. May says the majority of Scottish people don't want another Referendum. Yet the majority of Scots voted to remain in the EU. Square that circle, Theresa. Meantime, the Lib Dems insist Scotland can't have another Referendum, but demand another one for the EU. Labour oppose it one day while saying it would be fine another. Clueless bunch because none of them are chasing votes in Scotland anymore, and if and when in power ignore it anyway. All good stuff.
-
Interesting posit in today's National. I think John Curtice is quite right here to suggest that any Referendum also either at the same time or later puts the question of whether Scotland should be in the EU. Answers the point really that what is the point of gaining independence only to hand back powers to Europe? I think Scotland could easily vote for Independence if they also had a say on either out of EU, in the EU or in the single market but out of EU. And it would settle all questions on that additional issue. Meantime, we wouldn't be subject to populist votes down south, such as the Eurovision or the X Factor or indeed in General Elections where they continually vote for the wrong winner, he he.

Yeah, I'd already posted his Guardian Obit in the Character Actors thread. Now off to the Independence thread to respond to LFN, he he...

Jean Boht looked amazingly chirpy at Carla Lane's funeral, as did Nerys Hughes and Wendy Craig. It'd have to be an incredibly long list before they get on.

Fascinating that in 2017 a dead killer whale has a qualifying obit, but Tony Haygarth doesn't so far. Well, this is the country that voted for Scooch....

I'd agree this is a gamble. However, as yet I gather she's not saying she will hold another referendum. She is saying she is putting in place the mechanics for one if it looks like Westminster, for let's say the millionth time, gets a deal which disproportionately affects the Scottish interest (whatever that may be in x months' time). I'd say May's first response of "know your place, we'll handle this for you, get on with your little regional issues" isn't her best opening gambit. Catfight!

Pessimistic, aren't ya?

I find it easier actually to read the forum first before posting. Click on the unread topic on whichever of the four main forums, taking you to the first unread post, then at the bottom of the page, there is the option to go to the next unread topic. Much simpler than before. Might be different if you are using a phone or some other contraption to read, mind, I dunno. *shrug*
