@En Passant I entirely agree that flag waving and symbolism should not decide the election. But duty, honour and statesmanship do matter. Diplomacy matters. The President of the United States flew halfway around the world for this. The President of Ukraine left a warzone. Sunak couldn't spare a day? It's about our reputation. Our standing. He represents us. What he does matters. How he conducts himself matters.
And all this just adds to the reasons the lying, graceless little shit needs booting out of office ASAFP.

I've spent the last couple of days re-watching 'The Nazi's and the final solution' a bbc documentary from 2005 and I still believe we need to move on, even whilst drowning in my own tears. This is now all history, we need to care about those alive right now and ensure these lives weren't given away for nothing. Symbolism isn't it.
You can do both. The whole purpose of history is to learn from the past and not make the same mistakes again (which we are). D-Day was arguably the most significant day of the 20th Century. It was daring and it was dangerous and it paved the way for the defeat of the most dangerous regime in the history of modern Europe (yes, up to now, even more dangerous than Putin). It is commemorated every year, but this year is a significant milestone as it is the 80th anniversary and, probably, the last significant milestone for which there will be veterans alive for (85 is a possibility, but that's not as significant, 90 is unlikely). Reaffirming the commitment to peace and remembering the sacrifice that brought it to Europe is symbolic, but also crucial to us not repeating those mistakes. Sadly some of us need to stop reading revisionist history. For your tomorrow, we gave our today. As the Prime Minister of this country, the 80th anniversary of D-Day should be a solemn occasion where he represents the nation in giving thanks to those who died and honours those who are still with us. Instead, he bailed and did a political interview as he tries to stay in office. This is exactly why Sly Ronnie said having the election around the D-Day commemoration was a bad idea.
We can worry about the world today tomorrow. One day to remember is not an issue. Without them, we wouldn't have tomorrow.

11 hours ago, Bibliogryphon said:I have never gone for absolute definitive lists for example the Time lists one last time was hell to research as many of the lists were not visible for non-Time subscribers
Like with most games there is a balance between getting a hit (that is reported) or getting a unique - because Uniques here have a special place in the game the wider the category possibly the quicker the game but all three way of winning have been achieved in the five games so far. Buffalo Phil got one in each category which on the face of it looks the easiest way to win
There was one suggested category that got dropped because of lack of definition - Atheist Musicians
I'm currently updating my stats for previous games (I lost some data on a corrupted hard drive, so it's taking a bit of time), but one thing I mentioned in the last thread was that Game 1 was won by Unique Picks, Game 2 by All 5 Categories and Game 3 by Whole Category. Game 4 was won by Unique Picks, so if the pattern continued, Game 5 would be won by All 5 Categories...which it has! Whole Category should be next but that may require a massacre at the Met Gala or something.
What I would say to people throwing ideas out is be careful! You may need to save some ideas for your own game! (Especially if it's a good one )

I'm not going to pretend Money, Money, Money is the finest of ABBA's considerable output, but it's still better than most of what we had to vote on.

Refreshing boldness to the England squad announcement, but I've got to be honest, the only reason I'm commenting is, against the odds, having started the season at Ewood Park, local lad Adam Wharton is somehow in the squad. Loads of plaudits after his debut the other night, Southgate clearly rates him. Amazing for the lad.

YouGov's new poll (I don't have a link to hand) has the Tories on 19% and Reform on 17%. Highly implausible, I grant you. Labour still only 20-odd points in front on 40%. Lib Dems 10%, Greens 7%.
Electoral Calculus says:
LAB - 490 (+293)
CON - 56 (-320)
LDM - 63 (+55)
RFM - 3 (+3)
GRN - 2 (+1)
SNP - 14 (-34)
PC - 4 (+2)
Let's see what the others are saying in the days ahead...

Murdoch's never had a life-threatening situation though, to my knowledge. Fico's been shot, Bolsonaro was stabbed, Farage has had cancer and survived a plane crash. Even Trump had Covid (forgot about that). But all still living to spread their hatred, intolerance and idiocy.

But Toast needs thinking time!

Full of hate as predicted. All the opposition's fault naturally that his extremist views elicited an extreme reaction.
Fico, Farage and Bolsonaro are the living proof that only the good die young.

I mean not that it matters a jot, especially in this place where it's a pretty fluid concept in the first place.
Thought I was going mad! I was sure Biblio talked about his wife and daughter, then I started wondering if I'd been presumptuous in the 21st century. No harm done, we all make mistakes.

I tried to come up with categories in different areas: TV, film, music, public life and something else, but there's not a specific formula. Basically they need to have a wide enough pool of options that we don't all end up picking the same choices (sometimes we've been more successful than others on that front). Message Biblio, he's very helpful at kicking around ideas and knowing what might work and what might need a tweak.

We've already done that one! And we included anyone on stage. But not the conductors or orchestra.

Came to that conclusion with Boney M. It's a bop. I'd personally swap it for the ABBA song I'm not a fan of, but that'd be pissing in the wind given the support that song gets.
I was sorely tempted, but sometimes you've got to cut your losses, and we don't disagree on *everything* musically, just nearly everything. (I'd be putting ABBA through, for instance! )

I had a similar experience with Corinne Bailey Rae's "Go Put Your Records On", so I sympathise. I don't want to see the back of Roar personally, but won't save it from its inevitable fate. Also, I can't save everything and...I don't care, I love it.

Elected representative I suppose would be the distinction.
