Last month was a big carryover month and two teams were eliminated: Grim Up North and yours truly, Wormfarmer. msc picked up one carryover point, which hasn't hurt anyone . . . . so far. Teams for August just posted above. If En Passant sent me a team (I have been on vacation) I can't find it so please inform me where you sent it. If you haven't sent it yet - do it quick as penalty pts will start accumulating. You don't want to go down that way! I do not expect to add any further names to the game for the duration, unless there is a really big landslide of death that leaves the game with less than 50 to choose from.

More likely is that when I type a name in Excel that I have previously typed, the program "guesses" what I am going to type and fills it in for me. In this case, it remembered that I had in a previous month typed J Clegg as an entry worth 3 pts. It happens all the time, and usually I catch it and correct it, but here it slipped past me. The rules: Submit a list of 26 soon-to-croak people to me via PM. The first name or last name of the first person must begin with an A. Second person with a B. You get the idea. Since I have decided to try the PM idea there will be no protected names this year, or jokers. No need for them. Qualifying names will be those getting an obit by sources used by the Windy City Deadpool, also found on its own thread at this site. That pool, in turn, uses the obit sources of the Derby Dead Pool, but adds US sources ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox networks to make it more Yank friendly. I will also throw in CNN, The New York Times and the LA Times as legit obit sources. Also this year, the Associated Press. Since I do not regularly access any of the European obit sources, please police your own obits if they are not likely to pop up in the US sources. Scoring: A hit using the first name (all letters except as below) - 1 pt A hit using the last name (all letters except as below) - 2 pts A hit with the first name . . . (A, E, I, O, U, Y) - 2 pts (note V is not a premium letter this year) A hit with the last name . . . (A, E, I, O, U, Y) - 3 pts A hit with the first OR last name . . . (Q, X, Z) - 4 pts A hit with an alliterative name scores the points for both first and last names as specified above (so an alliterative at the A spot would be worth 5 pts, the B spot would be worth 3 pts, the Q spot would be worth 8 pts) Bonus pts: Person was born in the year 1938 or later - 2 pts IF we get 10 or more entries, bonus points for solos = 3 pts, and duos = 1 pt (We ended up with 18 entries) New for 2018: All Vowel Bonus - hit all 5 vowels using LAST names = 5 pts / hit any 4 vowels using last names + the letter Y = 4 pts Example: if someone gets a solo hit with Zadora Zephyr, who was born in 1940 (assuming 10+ entries), the score would be 8+2+3=13 (the best you could do with one hit). Ties will be broken by the date the final score is reached. That is, if 3 folks end up with 18 points, the person that got to 18 on the earliest date will be the winner.  My list was PM'd to YoungWillz, the first entry I got. The competition will start July 1 (all lists must be PM'd by the end of Jun 30) and end Jun 30, 2019. If any names die before the contest begins, I will ask for a replacement at that letter. Names at other letters may not be shuffled to accommodate the replacement. Enjoy!

Congrats to RadGuy for submitting a really outstanding list! (all lists are posted at the beginning of the thread) He ran away with it this year. I like this format, but it does result in a LOT of names to patrol so thanks to everyone for policing their own lists. I hope no scoring got missed, but that is part of the responsibility of deadpooling - - know your lists! Thanks to everyone for making it a high scoring year and to Sir Creep for picking it up for year 3. I would have done it otherwise, but since the offer was there, I am going to step down and let him run it. I will focus on my other pools for now. But I will certainly be watching for the call for entries from Sir Creep and plan to submit my best list yet for year 3!

Due to my surprise (and potential for a score) that bluegrass legend and member of The Seldom Scene, John Starling, has not yet gotten a creditable Obit, I did a short search and on MSN.com got several hits, including The Boston Globe, The Washington Post and Celebrity Access. I know those sites aren't listed as qualifying, but since I found them via msn.com, which IS a qualifying site, how do you determine from there if the obit is good or not? In other words, what is considered a good obit when found via msn.com?

Yes. With only 7 hrs left in the month (my time), it looks like it will be another scoreless month. Good news is no work to be done on a new team. Bad news is no eliminations, which means July will result in the elimination of the top 2 scoring teams (PLUS ties!). I am also not adding any new names, as this can only make the game easier, if I happen to add a name that people can successfully hedge as a long termer. If I add short termers, people will just stay away from them. So all teams are frozen in place through July. Good luck to all but two of you!

Good afternoon, ABC poolers! I know I have left you hanging on the possibility of a 3rd year for this pool. I do like running it and I think it is a good format. However, I have a big vacation coming up and I will be out for most of July. My plan was to have it run for 11 months, from Aug 1,2019 until June 30, 2020, thus giving people the whole month of July to submit teams. Now I see that recently Sir Creep has proposed just that exact thing, and he has also volunteered to take over running it. I think I would like that, just being able to play this year. I have a couple of other pools going, so I am starting to find it hard to juggle them all in a timely manner. So if Sir Creep is willing to do it I will hand over the reigns for ABC DP III. I will definitely be submitting a team via PM. My first year team was quite good, but I sure slipped in year 2. Today is the last day for new hits in the current pool. The master standings list for this year is still up to date as far as I know, but there are a lot of names involved so please check your own list and inform me of any mistakes/misses by July 5th for proper credit. Note: Entries are closed for 2018. Gonna try a new pool I've had turning in my head. This one might take a bit more work throughout the year than some pools, kind of like managing a fantasy football team, something almost every guy in the US does these days, it seems. This is a tournament of 12 months, with a cumulative score at the end determining the winner. The game: Submit your TEAM - a list of 5 names. Your top (first) name is worth 5 points if they die, your second name is worth 4 pts, and so on down to your bottom name which is worth 1 pt. Get your list in at any time beginning now, but this first list will score points only if you get a hit (and subsequent QO) during the month of January (I will use Wikipedia for the dates of all deaths). If you get a hit on the 31st (or last day of any month), you will double your points for that hit. So a top name would score 10 or a bottom name scores 2. Double points will also be awarded during the entire last week of December (Xmas through the 31st). This is the only bonus of the game. At the close of January, all lists become null, all names become free agents, and new lists can be submitted that will be good for the month of February, etc. You can only use a name once during the year at any given point position, and not in consecutive months. (So a max of 5 times for any given name). Also, once a name is posted at the top spot, no one else can use that name at the top spot for that month, same with the 4 spot, and so on. So any given name can only be on 5 active lists in any given month. But if a name is closed out in Jan, you will have another crack at it in Feb, and so on. If you get new intel about someone sick or injured, etc, you do not need to wait until the new month to post your new list. If you choose, you can post your next months list early (an inactive list), following the rules above which specify no duplicates at a given slot and no playing a name in consecutive months. NOTE: However, once you post your next months list, your active list is then void and you are unable to score for the rest of that month, (until your inactive list becomes active at the start of the next month). Which means you forfeit your chance at the month end bonus. I will post monthly standings, and try to police any illegal picks. New entries will be welcome until Jan 30th, but I may close it sooner if I get 20 entries (21 entries for 2018 were received). QO's: Any name scored by the Derby or AO Deadpools will be scored, or if they get a QO in the Associated Press. Last time I started a pool I caught some flak for putting my list out at the same time as the call for entries, so this time I will wait until the weekend to post my own team. On my spot on the globe, we just turned the calendar to June a couple of hours ago. That makes it official that Joey Russ (12), QTips (8) and Clorox Bleachman (8) are eliminated in that long, dry round by the likes of Doris Day and Tim Conway. While En Passant (7) and Grim Up North (5) score points, they still move on. We are down to the final 8 teams. I have received new teams for June from everyone except Grim Up North, so as soon as I get his I will post the master list here in the thread.
