Since Feb has so far been a very quiet month, there will not be any new names added. There should be plenty to choose from. If there is a flurry of death before the March entries start coming in, I will reconsider.

A very nice find, oldlady. I was playing Peter Tork every chance I got 10 years ago when he first got cancer as it sounded very bleak for him. But he contintued to do so well that I completely forgot about him until I saw him on your list this month. I still didn't think he was going to go. Sad he is gone but you made the most of it.

I cannot help you there either. Might be referring to the 2 teams that failed to submit a list in Rd 2, but they were eliminated that round so have not been playing since. Everyone else is "existent" to my knowledge. Sir Creep's post is cryptic to me at best, but it seems clear that his heart isn't in it at this point so hopefully his current score of 7 will hold up as the big score for the month which will gracefully release him from all obligations hereforth . . . . Clorox and Capn Chorizo may very well benefit!

Sir Creep, sir. Got your list, posted as of Friday, which has incurred a 7 pt penalty as thus: 3 pts for the death of a name on the master list (Mcgahan), which no one had on an active list (otherwise it would have been 3 pts plus the highest score incurred by a list containing mcgahan), plus one pt per day starting the 5th (4 pts). So I will get you posted, but you are in a hole. ALSO, you seem to have lapsed on the rules for this pool which state you cannot use names in consecutive months. Both Jimmy Carter and Marieke Vervoort were on your Jan list, so they are illegal here. Please sub in two legal names at the same spots ASAP. Otherwise if we get more hits I am going to have to figure out more penalty scenarios - sigh.

Not at all. I appreciate poolers like you that follow the scoring and help keep it straight. You had credit in Jan, and somehow in my translation to the Feb table it got vaporized. All fixed now, nothing personal.

The above table is posted with the teams in order in which they were posted for Feb. I am thinking that although this table does not show the standings without a lot of effort, it makes it easier to follow the decrease in point value for names that are used by multiple teams. I will post the standings separately each month for clarity on those. Three teams have yet to come in, and we got a new entry even though the game is closed (ebless). I will consider letting latecomers into the game if it appears teams that signed on in Jan bail out and don't submit this month. The last 3 teams may fall in that category. I think the strategy here is interesting, with the push and pull of the incentives to post early vs. the disincentives of losing out on scoring opportunities. We already have scoring for Feb with Andrew McGahan!! I personally missed a double 5 pt score with him by one day - he was top name on my Jan list. Cest la vie.

Well, in general, things seem to be running smoothly into month 2 . . . . . except for an exchange between Sir Creep and gcreptile that I don't think pertains to anything that happened in this game, or if it does, it went over my head. However, then Sir Creep posted a team that was an intentional exact replicate of gcreptile's that was just posted, and I did reserve the right to penalize such a tactic. The penalty is partially already built in to the format, as all those names will earn Sir Creep one less point if they hit than they will for gcreptile. But since it was intentional and I am trying to discourage the strategy, I will also doc Sir Creep his first Feb hit. If no hits occur in Feb, then no harm done, and we start over in March. But from here on out, let's play nice boys. Don't make me hate being the commish. Although I feel it is less complicated than last year since you don't have to worry about ranking the names to point value and avoiding previously taken point slots, note that it is still important to keep track of how many times a name appears on posted lists! Point in case: as of Clorox Bleachman's post Walter Jones had been used 5 times so his value was down to 1 point. So all lists using Walter Jones after that are wasting a slot as he is now worth zero (Banana, Joey). That is all I will say on that and in the future if you get a hit and score zero points . . . . . you know why. We have 21 Feb teams in already, and with all the different names it is likely to be a busy month of scoring. I will post a table in the next couple of days.

This is just a reminder for players who have not reread the rules and think they know what is going on from playing last year - - please reread the rules (first post) for major changes! You may post Feb lists early, but now if someone dies on your Feb list before Feb starts, you will NOT be able to replace them. This is in addition to nullifying your current Jan list. Also, check for last minute obits on your active list and post hits (even if no QO yet) BEFORE you post a new list, to confirm the death occurred before you nullify your active list with an early post. This year there is more incentive to post early - - more potential points per name if you are first, but the disincentives are also steeper. Thanks for playing, and I hope this new version of 5-4-3-2-1 is more challenging that last year's.

Bingo! I hope I have made amendments (just now) to the opening rules post that clarifies what you just asked about, and more! Check it out Quim - and I hope it has addressed concerns by those who didn't like the original changes from last years game.

The game has started! The only other premature death that I can find (wikipedia) which can be replaced is on the list of Joey Russ, who was the first to enter and has Larry Langford. Larry passed way back on the 8th. Otherwise, I believe we are good to go. Further clarification of the above new rule: Check your obits before you post an early team! You must note any new score before posting, since once posted you forfeit your current active team! Also, remember you cannot go to the same black banana in consecutive months. One more disincentive to post too early - - starting Feb early posted teams that get a hit before the month starts canNOT be replaced with a new name. You will play the month with a short list! So it is a risk to post a week in advance -- your hot new name may not make it to active status! I will post a table soon, and may close the game to new entries.

So far we have 25 entries this year! More than initially signed in last year, although including the people who dropped out and those who came in late it was a few more total last year. The game starts in a few hours, and I believe I have come up with a compromise on the rule change that has been raised. For Jan, the lists are all good and will stand. Beginning with the Feb lists, teams will consist of 5 names, all worth 5 points each if they are the first time the name is submitted in that month. For example, if I post my team on Jan 27th, I lose my active Jan team, and cannot score until Feb 1 with my new Feb team. But if I am the first to do so each of my names is worth 5 pts! If the next team to post uses one (or more) of my names, they can do so but will only score 4 points for those names. The next poster to use one of those names will only get 3 pts for the hit, then 2, then 1, then finally after 5 appearances, the name is worth nothing for that month. So like last year, each name can only appear on 5 active lists per month, but if you want to try for max points, you need to post a list of 5 fresh names. Ranking the names is no longer necessary, the order is irrelevant. This may turn out to be a scoring disaster for me, but I think I have a way I can graphically illustrate it in the team tables I post each month. So the incentive to post early has increased with this new rule. A fresh team has the potential for 25 points in a month (without any bonus). So I am also going to increase the incentive to NOT post early. Hits incurred on the last day of the month will be worth 3X points, and those on the second to last day of the month will earn double points. Again, wikipedia dates will be used to decide dates of death. Since we are getting close to start time, I hope everyone is on board with this new idea and it works well. May the trophy go to the most astute nose for death! I will post this new rule change at the beginning of the thread as well and make some edits there soon.
