Sorry about that! I was waiting for the last entry from Yorkshire Banker to come in and never saw that it was posted. I am getting too many pools running and lost track of this one. I am working on the final grid now and will have it posted today. Thanks for playing and staying up with it!

Still hoping my 2018 Theme Team "Syndication Zombies" gets added to the scoring grid before the year is out. 3 hits and 15 points I am very proud of.

Please check your own list posted above for accuracy and let me know if it is incorrect. My list was previously PM'd to Quim since he was the first to get his list in for Dec. Madhatter and the Unknown Man were eliminated in Rd 2. Carryover (tiebreaker) points were earned by Joey Russ (7), Capn Chorizo (6) and Skinny K (1). These will only count against you if you ever end up in a tie for elimination at the end of a round. Some Rd 3 stats: Most picked: QE2 - 8 times, mugabe - 7 times, cardin/dole/nolan - 6 times there were 8 solo picks (meaning instant death if you picked them and they are the only death in Dec): barker, escheverria, frates, harper, lear, overton, reiner, stiles 13 names were unpicked for Dec!! Good luck all!

Yes, this has been an important issue in all of my pools because so many of my teams hail from the Europe side of the globe, and I am in North America. What I have decided to do is use wikipedia's death notices as the source for the exact date. In this case, GHWBush passed on Nov 30, and no teams had him on a list, so there was no scoring involved. But he was credited as a Nov hit. If he had been listed as a Dec 1 death, then the teams that had not yet submitted would have taken the late list (score +3) penalty. So in this game, it is best to get your list in for the next round at the END of the month prior, so you have no risk of penalty. I will (try to) post updates several days before the new round starts so you have the new names (if any) to choose from. These list updates will appear on the thread's first post. Thanks for bringing this up!
-
Actually, replacing any name is not allowed, unless the name dies prior to the start of the month. I just checked and didn't see anything on Ricksen's passing. Prophet?

OK, here's my last hurrah: bob barker beth chapman kane tanaka Richard A Overton loongkoonan I almost put beth chapman at the top spot, but noticed I already had her there way back in Feb. Whew, that was close.

Unknown Man and Mad Hatter are out. Joey Russ and Captain Chorizo scored this round but dodge the bullets due to the former two teams not submitting a list. You, Skinny, had Devin Lima at the #1 spot so you had 1 point for the round. Only the two highest scoring teams were eliminated, so you would not have been one of them. Your point, however, lurks in the background and in a future round, if you are tied with another team for the lead, this point will be compared to the other teams carryover total and it (may) work against you. Unless the team you are tied with has more than 1, in which case you will be ok. That is all I was saying.

Remember that Dec is the final month, and from Xmas to Dec 31 is double pts week! I am holding out for another day as I need every double pt chance I can get!
-
I know I am a wee bit early, but I am going out on a limb and calling the two teams that never got a team in the fatalities for the month. I only have one team submitted so far for Dec, and there is never a penalty for submitting a team early, so go ahead whenever you get a chance. Remember, no names allowed from your Rd 2 list, but you can use up to 5 names from your rd 1 list. See the top of the thread for an update of the list (only one name died, so I only added one new name for Dec). Congrats to Joey and Capn Cho for escaping the month, but they have 6 and 5 carryover pts, respectively, which may work against them if they are caught in a tie in the future. Skinny K would not have been eliminated, but also got 1 carryover pt. We are down to 14 teams. . . . .

To catch up on some of the "controversies" of the game: I should reiterate that this is a survivor style pool. Some folks (based on early thread chatter) seem to mistake this term to reference the names we are choosing from as being some kind of survivors. Nope - WE are the survivors - the ones that don't get eliminated and continue on to play the subsequent month. We have a long running an well watched show called Survivor in the states that works this way, so that is what I am referencing. I think it was once a European show, but no idea if it had any legs over there like it does here. Anyway, the 17 entries we got at the start are the pool of survivors, and each has to be eliminated fairly. I was hoping that all entries would show diligence in submitting a list every month, but things happen and people get busy and fade away . . . yada yada. Still, to keep with the timeline we eliminate them in a systematic timeframe, otherwise this thing would probably be over in February if we cut out everyone who was late with a list every month. So yes, players like Joey (in this months case) are benefitting because the pool is getting smaller because of people not putting in the effort. I have yet another way to balance this conundrum if you will accept it for future months: Beginning on the 5th of the month, a point is scored for each day a list is not submitted. This penalty is in addition to the +3 pts penalty already in place. This allows someone who submits a team a week late to still beat someone who submits 2 weeks late (or not at all), and eliminates someone even if there are no deaths for the month. Any comments on this?

theoldlady and sirC have until the end of the year to produce the QO for ND Tiwari. And Cap'n Cho misses Ted Mack for 2 pts by a few days. I am almost falling asleep at my computer, so check your teams for accuracy (other than the random keystroke error). Good luck to all in round 11. Remember the last week of Dec is double points week!

I was assuming the popularity of this name meant he was a shoe in for an obit. Maybe a household name in New Delhi?? Have I jumped the gun here? I tend to be lax on QO's, but if there is nothing remotely close then I will have to amend the leaderboard when I post the NOV teams, which I plan on doing soon. Anyone? Bueller?

Only two more chances to score and move up the leaderboard. Better make the lists good. For Nov: Leah Bracknell Tim Conway Jean Louis Trintignant Loretta Lynn Katie Hnida

Hopefully I can clear up some of the Q's from GUN above: We will just hold the teams as is for October, we will still be in Rd 2. No need to submit new teams "just in case". If someone dies, even on the last day, then I will just update scores, eliminate the loser for the round and start accepting Nov (rd 3) teams immediately. However, note that to keep the competition on schedule, at the end of Nov the 2 teams with the highest scores will BOTH be eliminated. I am not sure I understand the final question, but maybe this will address it: When new teams are needed, whether it is Nov or Dec, you cannot use any names from your prior active list, but you can go back two lists (in this case Sept lists) and use up to 5 of the names you had there. This requires some turnover, and prevents people from just reusing the same 10 names from month to month. Finally, our MIA teams can still submit, but if any death from the master list happens before they do, they will incur a penalty equal to the highest score by an active list, plus 3 points. So if IMPei died and the highest resulting score from that death was 6 points, the MIA teams would all score 9. This rule has been discussed and is a change from the version posted at the onset of this pool, but I think it is a fairer way to assess penalties on late submitters. It does not guarantee that a late submitter will go home at the end of the month, but it makes it likely. Unfortunately it appears it may come into play sooner rather than later. Everybody good?

Looks like I started out transcribing your list, then at the #9 spot, where you both had Carter, I jumped over and finished out with Joey Russ's list. All better now.
-
I am thinking of a new tiebreaking criteria, that would only currently harm one player by implementing it after the game was begun (Madhatter). And if madhatter doesn't get a team in soon, he may be eliminated anyway by the end of this month. The new criteria would be that the first tiebreaker will be cumulative points scored in previous months. Right now, madhatter is the only team with any points from round 1 and it is only 1 point. If anyone has a problem with this new rule, speak up before the end of the month, and preferably before any hits are recorded here in Oct. Check your Oct teams for accuracy (other than minor typos). Game on!

The two players who have not submitted (yes, I know they have probably dropped out at this point) both receive 6 pts plus 3 penalty points so they each have 9. If things stay this way through Nov, they will be the two teams eliminated and JRuss and Capn Cho will be the lucky beneficiaries. However, they will both have carryover pts which will be used against them in future tie situations (as will Skinny with 1 pt). see next post below:

I do like your thinking. I may take it exactly as you suggest, or maybe do something like this: Upon any death, the penalty is the highest number of points scored by an active list, +2. Or something similar. And since there has been no incident to invoke it yet, as long as it does not happen to the two late comers this month, I may install it as a rule starting in round 3. I think the reason that I did not go that high originally is because if someone is just a day or two late and for a good reason (who knows, death in the family, illness, etc) a 10 point penalty would almost surely spell their deathknell. But I agree that is more logical than having someone else go home that submitted on time. Thanks! WF

No fear, the thread is lying to you. Your entry was read and booked some time ago. I get the message via an email, and when I see it there, the site evidently doesn't know it. The only two players that currently may run afoul of the late entry rule are The Unknown Man and Madhatter 1. And John Key's list is just for fun, as with the dawn of October round 1 is over and he is the first casualty with a big 4 points. Round 2 runs until the end of Oct. Who's next?
-
Sep was a slow month, only 2 hits. Could mean good things for Oct. The Slavic Death returns to action after a self-imposed hiatus. The game is chronologically 3/4ths over and there are (in my estimate) 7 teams still in the running (allowing for Sean to regroup and put in a team or two before the end of the year). Maybe another 3 teams are a longshot with some real hot lists and a bit of luck to match. We are coming down the stretch, it is time to whip your horse . . . .

A reminder to folks who play a lot of pools. I know it can get confusing to remember the specifics of each. But here, there is no such thing as a LATE entry. You potentially penalize yourself by entering late, as you may miss some low hanging fruit that drops, or miss out on a big name that gets selected at all 5 spots for the month. But you can submit your team at anytime in the month with no "official" penalty. Carry on.

Please be sure to check for any obits prior to early posting of a new team, so that you may be credited for a legit score. If you post early, and do not report your score first, you can lose those points. If you wait until the start of the new month to post, but a late obit comes in for a name you had in that previous month, you will still get the points. Joey Russ loses his #2 slot for Oct, after forfeiting his 3 spot last month. It appears he is trying to win this thing with a self imposed handicap of 4 names per month . . . . what a brute. Would "Joey Rush" be more appropriate? My Oct lame-O's: Roberta McCain Johnny Clegg Clive James Gene Cornish Richard A Overton
