I know what you mean about forgetting your entries. I keep track of my entries ok, but often lose track and forget about "trade" periods and miss them every time. My logic/goal will be to make it difficult for players to select a list of 10 that will easily skate through the month. So in addition to most of the Derby Drop 40, I will try to add names that all have a pretty good chance of dying in the next month or so. The worse job I do, the easier it is for you guys. However, all it takes is one big mistake on an otherwise good list, and you can be the one going home. Somebody will hopefully make that mistake every month. As we get down to just a few people left in the tournament, I may make contestants submit a 20 (or more) name list, to help insure the game ends on time. Thanks for your comments!

I thought of that, and addressed it in the "ties" section, thus: If we have a month where NO TEAM scores a hit (hopefully unlikely, but sometimes it gets slow . . . ), all lists will carry on into the next month, no changes allowed. So in this scenario we would in effect have longer scoring periods, but I like the idea of shorter ones for two reasons: It moves the game along, and it eliminates people faster and more of them. In thinking about these carryover months, I would also like to add that for each additional month without a score, we add another elimination, so the top two scores are out after the second month, etc. If we do come down to having more than two people left at the end of next year, I would say in the final month, the lowest score wins it. But my goal will be to get it down to the final two heavyweights. Thanks for your comments!

Yes, it's like the inverse, but with survivor-style elimination. A bastardization of several other pools, I think. You have to like the type of pool that takes ongoing effort, rather than submitting once and then waiting a year to see how it shakes out. And with the "likes"I was trying to keep the thread short and manageable so we are not on page 3 before the thing even gets off the ground. With your post I am unsure about whether you thought it was worth trying or not, so can I respond with a confused?

Mary Carlisle - continued . . . It looks like all support is favoring my scoring of Mary Carlisle. My intention in choosing a replacement instead was to head off future potential controversy when lists are submitted and obits arrive on the same day, without any time stamp of death, thus bringing up the question: Which came first - the list or the death? I am very impressed by those of you who could actually track down the time stamp on someone like Mary Carlisle - I evidently have a lot to learn about research and obits. Can this be done for most anybody? If I can count on some of you professionals to track this down in the event of any future simultaneous list/deaths, I would say we have a solution! Thanks for the votes of confidence and I will update the table. I can use the points.

Ahhh . . . a potential controversy. I was reluctant to give up my shot at double points in July, so I submitted my list a couple of hours into the first day of August (my time) and had Mary Carlisle in the 4 spot. Around 14 hours later, I check the obits and lo and behold, Mary is on the list! Because I don't know exactly when she died and have no proof that my list was submitted prior to her death, my points are suspect. I intended to address this possibility with a rule, but I cannot find if I ever did post it, and now it is here to bite me. (By the way, does anybody know a way to "skim" through a long thread by looking at posts from one particular member only? It would be helpful for me to be able to do that rather than have to read through 14 pages of past chatter to find a particular post.) I hate to give up a justly earned 4 points, but the only way to be fair is to scratch Mary from my list and treat her as a DOA that happened before my list became active. In that scenario, I can at least invoke the rule set forth in June when Sir Creep had Joe Jackson who died prior to his list becoming active, and allow myself a substitution. I would like to sub allergist William Frankland in at the 4 spot. Does anyone have a vote of support or opposition to this? (No sub made, Mary Carlisle score stands, see arguments below).

Another slow summer month in July, except for theoldlady, who makes huge strides up the leaderboard. Also another month with a lack of time for my own research, so I will again go with a list of brown bananas and see what drops off the tree (see my list in the table above). Still hoping for a few more entries, I will edit them in as they come in.

Supercentenarian Chiyo Miyako is no more. That one new hit separates the pack - 1 pt for cap'n cho who used her at the "c", and two pts for Sir Creep, for wisely putting her at the "m". Phantom quickly drops to 3rd. These guys are off to a good start, but it is still verrrry early.

Wow, June was a slow month, but we have hit the halfway mark, with a couple of teams showing their mastery of the format (Sean, gcreptile). Looks like Sean will need some time off though, so the rest of us have a chance to make up some ground. I am a bit confused about all the chatter (and editing) done above regarding a new entry by The Slavic Death, so unless someone can clarify, I have not added that team to the grid. Youwanticewiththat has not submitted for several months, so I don't know if they are still playing the game, but with 5 pts scored back in Feb, their spot is held in the grid. Either way, there was room to add Wouk This Way as a new team. Bibliogryphon has yet to submit, but I will update when he does.

I organized a dead pool for about 10 years between a couple of friends and myself until they eventually dropped out. But I enjoyed it because it was small and manageable enough. This is a new idea I haven't seen before and I hope to get a dozen entries to try it out. The pool starts now and ends on June 30, 2018. No entry fee the first year since it is a trial run, but no prizes either. The rules: Submit a list of 26 soon-to-croak people. The first name or last name of the first person must begin with an A. Second person with a B. You get the idea. You can enter at any time until I have 12 entries, then it will be closed. One list per customer, please. Qualifying names will be those getting an obit by sources used by the Windy City Deadpool, also found on its own thread at this site. That pool, in turn, uses the obit sources of the Derby Dead Pool, but adds US sources ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox networks to make it more Yank friendly. Since I am a Yank, I kind of like that. I will also throw in CNN, The New York Times and the LA Times as legit obit sources. Since I do not regularly access any of the British/European obit sources, I will rely on any overseas contestants to police their own obits if they are not likely to pop up in the US sources. Scoring: A hit with the first name beginning with the appropriately corresponding letter, (all letters except as below) - 1 pt A hit with the last name beginning with the appropriately corresponding letter, (all letters except as below) - 2 pts A hit with the first name . . . A, E, I, O, U, V, Y - 2 pts A hit with the last name . . . A, E, I, O, U, V, Y - 3 pts A hit with the first or last name . . . Q, X, Z - 4 pts A hit with the first AND last name (all letters not listed) - 4 pts A hit with the first AND last name (all listed letters) - 8 pts Bonus pts: Person was born in the year 1937 or later - 2 pts IF we get 12 entries, I will start awarding bonus points for solos (3 pts), and duos (1 pt). They will be awarded retroactively if the hit occurs before the last entry comes in. Example: if someone gets a solo hit with Zadora Zephyr, who was born in 1940 (assuming 12 entries), the score would be 8+2+3=13 (the best you could do with one hit). Ties will be broken by the date the final score is reached. That is, if 3 folks end up with 18 points, the person that got to 18 on the earliest date will be the winner. Finally, there is always a disadvantage to posting a list early in that early lists can be picked over by everyone else who joins after. (Is it a problem? I don't know) But as an incentive to get your list in early, you can choose four names to protect for the rest of the game. That is, select any four names on your list which cannot be used by anyone submitting a list after yours (names already on submitted lists stay on). Indicate these 4 names by writing "protected" after them. It is your responsibility to peruse the protected names already submitted before submitting your list.
