OK, I'm going to be lenient just this once and give it to you, despite the mistyping on my part.

Remember to get your lists in for Round 2 (even you, John Key, in case there is a last minute change in the standings) anytime before the end of the month. You can post here or PM me if you prefer not to share until the round has begun. Late lists will incur a penalty if ANYONE on the master list dies in Oct prior to their list being submitted. See details in the intro to this thread. Remember, no names can be reused from your round 1 list, but 5 new names have been added for your selecting pleasure in round 2. John Key's time may be running out . . . . . . By the way, I thought it very amusing that British musician Chas Hodges, keyboardist of "Chas and Dave" died yesterday of . . . wait for it . . . . organ failure. How appropriate.

Standings list is updated for all scores discussed above, plus a solo hit Denis Norden by Wouk This Way (at the D spot). Phantom is off to a helluva start. All is updated.

I don't know what you mean by make some noise. Do you want a PM when someone scores? I will update the table fairly regularly as needed.

Nice breakdown above, paddyfool. I had already looked at that for myself, but hadn't thought about doing it for all lists. Thanks for the work. It is interesting to see that only Bibliogryphon's list is impervious to a single death month. Lots of us can go home with as many as 4 or 5 different one-and-done scenarios! Some further stats: Yes, 50 of the 56 eligible names in round 1 were drafted. Only Don Lusk, Beverly Cleary, Leslie Philips, Herman Wouk, Norman Lloyd and Lucia Hiriart went untaken. Most common name was QE2 on 13 out of 17 lists. Second was Kenny Rogers at 9. Many names (13) were only taken once. Remember, I will likely add some names prior to round 2 so that the pool doesn't get too small. My goal will be to make the new names unattractive. Will you have the cajones to select them?

Another double points day appears to have passed uneventfully. Sigh. On the bright side, Aug was probably our biggest month so far, with 6 different names giving up points. Looking forward to posting the new standings, once a few more teams get their Sept entries in. Here is my team for Sept: Kane Tanaka Le Duc Anh I M Pei Yasuhiro Nakasone Katsumi Tezuka No theme here. Goo Ruck!
-
Rest assured your entries have been read and tabulated (this is why you did not receive individual solicitations to get your entries in). You guys are hungry for a new game I can tell. I will go and respond to everyone individually right now. . . . . .
-
New standings list can now be found just below the team lists on page 1. What a flurry of action!
-
I consider myself a movie buff, but I have only seen 16 (17 if Wolf is added as a late entry). Nary even half! Fun pool!
-
OOOhh. You really have an inside scoop. According to IMDB and Wikipedia, he is still kicking. I guess I may have missed a landmine after all. Thanks for the shoutout.

Folks, now that I already have 7 entries in hand, we will have to play the first month with 59. I figured that Aretha would not make it to the start of the round, but would also not be picked to survive it, either. It may go even lower with two weeks of "dead" time before the start. But that is not really a problem, 60 is an arbitrary number anyway. As I stated, by the time we get to round 2, there will likely be a few less, so I may add names each month, or I may not. The main thing is we are all gardening with the same batch of earthworm food, and the cleverest (or luckiest) players will do the right thing with the group we have. One thing that I did not specify, but stands to reason, is that if a pick dies before the starting gun, they can add a replacement - AT THAT SPOT. Please don't shuffle your whole list to accommodate a new name. Also, I can list the names vertically in the future if it is preferred by some. I only did it paragraph style to save room in the thread. Carry on!
-
Well, I didn't quite get to 12, but 11 is close enough, the game will be easily manageable, and we may yet get a few more entries before the closing date. In the meantime, we have a game. See the rules at the beginning of this thread. Here is your list of 60 names to start the game. PM your first team of 10 to me by Aug 31st, the first round will occur during the entire month of Sep. Remember your second round team cannot contain any names from your first team, so you may want to plan ahead and not use all your gimmies in the first round. I will PM my list to one of the first to submit. Leah Bracknell, Kirk Douglas, G H W Bush, Prince Philip, Clive James, John McCain, Olivia deHavilland, Vera Lynn, Beverly Clearly, Herman Wouk, Norman Lloyd, Robert Mugabe, Doris Day, Nobby Stiles, Stefan Karl Stefansson, Jimmy Carter, Fernando Ricksen, Greg Gilbert, Linda Nolan, Jill Gascoigne, Marieke Vervoort, Devin Lima, Prunella Scales, Simon Ricketts, Leslie Phillips, Jimmy Greaves, Denis Norden, Henry Kissinger, Queen E II, Le Duc Anh, Genesis P-Orridge, Jose Jose, Pete Frates, I M Pei, Katherine Johnson, Sheila Mercier, Lucia Hiriart, Sumner Redstone, Bob Dole, Carol Channing, Bob Barker, John Paul Stevens, Dilip Kumar, Kenny Rogers, Norman Lear, Pierre Cardin, Yasuhiro Nakasone, Al Jaffee, Javier Perez de Cuellar, Luis Escheverria, John Cruickshank, Hugh Downs, George Shultz, Carl Reiner, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Spencer P Jones, Rick Flair, Don Lusk, Richard A. Overton, Aretha Franklin.

Hey, no worries, it's all what you prefer. But me, I get antsy if I have to wait 12 months to put together a new team of potential stiffs. I am sure I am going to hit a point eventually where I have too much deadpooling going on though, and have to cut back. I wish it was more scattered year round and not mostly bunched up around the start of each year. Trying to inch things that way with this type of pool.
-
I'm in. After a good period of research, I came up with . . . . . .The Longest Day, Dewey Martin, Patrick Jordan and Michael Medwin, all born in 1923! Then before posting I looked again and shitbox if it ain't already taken. 12 million movies out there and someone finds the same one I did. Oh well, going with my backup then: A Bridge Too Far, 1977 Sean Connery 1930 Gene Hackman 1930 Ryan O'Neal 1941 It's a longshot, but at least the actors are all household names.

Once I saw the post that Chatterjee was dead, I logged in thinking for sure he was going to score some teams some August points. But the consecutive months rule bit Prophet and Sir Creep in the ass, and none of the rest of us were cunning enough to pick up on him in August. That's how the game is played! Carry on obithawks.

I know what you mean about forgetting your entries. I keep track of my entries ok, but often lose track and forget about "trade" periods and miss them every time. My logic/goal will be to make it difficult for players to select a list of 10 that will easily skate through the month. So in addition to most of the Derby Drop 40, I will try to add names that all have a pretty good chance of dying in the next month or so. The worse job I do, the easier it is for you guys. However, all it takes is one big mistake on an otherwise good list, and you can be the one going home. Somebody will hopefully make that mistake every month. As we get down to just a few people left in the tournament, I may make contestants submit a 20 (or more) name list, to help insure the game ends on time. Thanks for your comments!

Certainly not a quote by Abe Vigoda.

I thought of that, and addressed it in the "ties" section, thus: If we have a month where NO TEAM scores a hit (hopefully unlikely, but sometimes it gets slow . . . ), all lists will carry on into the next month, no changes allowed. So in this scenario we would in effect have longer scoring periods, but I like the idea of shorter ones for two reasons: It moves the game along, and it eliminates people faster and more of them. In thinking about these carryover months, I would also like to add that for each additional month without a score, we add another elimination, so the top two scores are out after the second month, etc. If we do come down to having more than two people left at the end of next year, I would say in the final month, the lowest score wins it. But my goal will be to get it down to the final two heavyweights. Thanks for your comments!

Yes, it's like the inverse, but with survivor-style elimination. A bastardization of several other pools, I think. You have to like the type of pool that takes ongoing effort, rather than submitting once and then waiting a year to see how it shakes out. And with the "likes"I was trying to keep the thread short and manageable so we are not on page 3 before the thing even gets off the ground. With your post I am unsure about whether you thought it was worth trying or not, so can I respond with a confused?
-
May I take this space to make a shameless plug for my newest (third) pool to the deathlist forums universe. It will be a bastardization of other pools I have seen plus some ideas I have not yet seen. I will put the specifics out in a new thread called "Inverse Survivor Deadpool I". Come and take a look when you get a chance. I will have the concept up for a week or so to gauge the interest before I put out a call for players.

Lietzke is updated! See page 1. While I have your attention, I am considering adding a third new pool to the deathlist forums universe. I will put the idea out in a new thread called "Inverse Survivor Deadpool I" hopefully by tonight. Come and take a look when you get a chance. I will have the concept up for a week or so to gauge the interest before I put out a call for players.
