I never said it would cause human extinction. But a key part of adaptation is to stop making it worse, and the widespread denial of our actions having consequences is likely to stop meaningful changes from happening. At least until those consequences get pretty catastrophic in the here and now. Maybe when annual sea level rise is more like 20mm than 2mm we might start seeing meaningful change, but by that point a lot of the trouble is locked in.

Essentially, not enough people are worried enough to do anything, so we're all a bit boned. Or at least, those of us still alive in 2050 will all be a bit boned, and those of us still alive in 2100 will be a lot boned.

Some more musings on the topic of how COVID will likely affect the tiers of different countries: The harder hit countries in Tier 1 and Tier 2 are likely to drop in life expectancy by something of the order of 1 to 4 years for their 2020 figure, based on some back of an envelope calculations that would really bore you. This means that quite a few countries in Tier 1 will likely drop to Tier 2, among them the UK, Belgium, Costa Rica and Chile, maybe also Italy, France and Spain. And quite a few Tier 2 countries will likely drop to Tier 3, among them Mexico, Brazil, and Peru. Probably not the USA though, unless things go significantly worse the rest of this year even than they have already. In countries in Tier 3 and below it shouldn't have that much of an effect, however, primarily since the death rate is relatively low among the under 70s.

Indeed. More importantly for this poll, the number of deaths today was pretty big too (241, meaning that all of us called it far too low...) Wednesday 230

Beyond the age, it's worth noting he also has dementia, and has withdrawn from the public eye. None of this is exactly new, however, and as we know, dementia patients can linger on for years and years.

So with six seven finalists so far, any of these individuals could bring it to a close: Earl Holliman (92) Gerald Harper (? 89 or 91) Gunnel Lindblom (88) Sean Connery (90) Jean-Louis Trintignant (89) Leslie Phillips (96) EDIT: Jamie Farr (86) I wonder what they'd have been like in a film together back when they were all still performing...

We're getting there. I think this makes six teams on two hits each, and we can add the 92 year old Earl Holliman to the list of actors who can bring the pool to a close.
