Not really. Oftentimes crossing state lines during the commission of a felony creates a federal crime where none existed before (drug possession becomes drug trafficking - kidnapping becomes human trafficking, etc.). Otherwise, such as in the case of a serial killer, each state tries the crimes in their jurisdiction separately or elects not to as the case may be. Edit: That being said federal courts have original jurisdiction over certain civil suits which would otherwise be argued in state courts. Often when states are suing one another etc.

Eligibility rules for elected federal offices are written into the constitution. Any change would require an amendment; an arduous process which, even when most people would agree the stated change is a good idea, is too laborious to set in motion and complete for something so minor. Admittedly, it seems like a more glaring oversight now than in the past when it was basically unimaginable that someone with so few scruples and so little shame would stand for high office.

Despite prosecuting crimes in the name of the citizens of the United States, as opposed to a particular state, federal courts are portioned into district courts. These districts cover a distinct geographic area (there are exceptions but they are not important here) and the state’s attorney for a given district prosecutes crimes committed in that district before jurors from within its confines. The charges being filed in DC have to do with the fact that the violation of federal law occurred within that district. I hope that clears it up.

@Hartnell 1999 This thread is a useful resource and one of the few threads that remains unclogged with unnecessary comments. If you wish to use it for this, and encourage others to do so, would you kindly create a new thread?

To be fair…who really can?

@Paul Bearer - in ten years of lurking and over six of being an active contributor I have not once asked that something be done about trolls/pollution on the threads. That being said can we please, for the love of Christ, get this particular thread under control? Thank you in advance.

Are you saying that someone who reaches one age is not guaranteed to reach the next one? You know that’s just being alive right?

With the death of Luigi Bettazzi there are now only five Second Vatican Council Fathers and none from North America, Oceania, or Europe Francis Cardinal Arinze 90 (last to later be named a cardinal, last native African representative) Alphonsus Mathias 95 (India) José de Jesús Sahagún de la Parra 101 (last living bishop appointed by John XXIII, also last living South American representative) Daniel Alphonse Omer Verstraete 98 (Belgian by birth but represented an African diocese, was an apostolic administrator while at the council and was named bishop later, last non-bishop council father) Victorinus Youn Kong-hi 98 (South Korea)

You’re quite right. I had forgotten. I used the search tool and came up with nothing - huge surprise.

Had a difficult time deciding where to put this: Jack Hanna, zookeeper and television celebrity, has Alzheimer’s. He was always fun on Letterman and seems like a decent guy. He’s 76 and will definitely obit. From the article it sounds very advanced. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2023/06/21/alzheimers-jack-hanna-columbus-zoo-david-letterman-animal-guy/70342408007/

Incorrect. Again please try to read things before posting. What I very clearly said was that one of the living bishops was involved in the Warsaw uprising as a very young man. I have no evidence that he was part of any organized military group or someone who chose to be involved without any explicit involvement with an organized group. This is the issue with terms like partisan or underground. There were many people involved, and many more of the living as the survivors get reduced to people involved in their youth, the involvement of children or teens was relatively nebulous at best.
-
The key word there being most. You’re picking a fight without cause about a non-issue. The person in question was a child and participated in a somewhat organized/somewhat spontaneous uprising. I have no evidence that he was part of any organized military group. That was the distinction being made. Please try to understand before one of us dies.
-
Yes. You are correct. Do you really think everyone involved in the Polish resistance were part of an organized military organization? You really need to understand words if you’re going to make semantic arguments.
-
In addition to having an organized military there were partisans, you colossal fucking idiot.
-
Wow. You are proving every point that I made. The Soviets had both an Army and partisan groups, as did the Poles. If your goal is to be of even moderate use on this site don’t pick unnecessary fights about things you don’t understand.
-
Let’s start with that’s not what you wrote; so, your exasperation did not land because you functionally cannot type or think. I’ll leave that up to you. Partisan groups may in fact be organized and they may in fact be military (of sorts) but they are not ‘organized military’ by any stretch of anyone’s imagination. In fact describing them as such would erase the necessity of using terms such as partisan or underground. I fully expect you to attempt to correct this because you’re an obvious troll who cannot be bothered to use a dictionary let alone make their point using properly constructed sentences. As such: fuck off.
-
I believe I said the exact opposite. Try reading before posting.
-
This may, it’s hard to be certain, leave Rene Henry Gracida as the last Catholic bishop that is also a veteran of the Second World War. There is also a Polish bishop who was present at/participated in the Warsaw uprising but he was certainly a partisan and not a member of any organized military unit.

Any particular reason or are you just naming people you learned were famous?
-
No. Ten years ago there were very few remaining WWI vets. There are still literally hundreds of thousands of living WWII vets. While these posts are well meaning they are premature. If you were paying proper attention you could make one of these birthday posts every day. At this point these posts are just pollution in an otherwise interesting and useful thread.

@lay_kulast95 The joke, which you obviously failed to comprehend, is that the conspiracy theory you’re espousing is so old it’s the basis for a film from 1968. A truly exceptional film, but I don’t suggest you watch it lest you start buying up mineshafts. No reputable source has ever found evidence that fluoridation of the drinking water is unsafe, possibly ineffective, but not unsafe.
