Alan Root (IMDb), a British born Kenyan cinematographer, has died aged 80. He is best known for his wildlife documentaries, including the Academy Award nominated Mysterious Castles of Clay. His former wife, Joan Root (IMDb), also worked on documentaries until she was shot and killed in Kenya - she received an obituary from The Guardian. Sean O'Callaghan, IRA terrorist who turned and worked as a special agent for the Irish Government from 1979-1988, has died aged 62. He voluntarily surrendered to British prosecution and wrote accounts of his experiences both as a book and for The Sunday Times. After being granted a Royal Prerogative of Mercy by Her Majesty, he went on to become a part time adviser to the Ulster Unionist Party. Quite the change of heart. Mirgayas Shirinsky, the Russian ambassador to Sudan, has been found dead aged 62 in his swimming pool. This marks the 9th Russian diplomat to die in the space of less than a year. -
George G. Klein, an American veteran who for decades has been hailed as a hero who took part in the D-Day landings, has revealed he is nothing more than a fraud. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Légion d'Honneur for his 'bravery', although at age 96 he has admitted he made the whole thing up and was in fact in Northern Ireland at the time of D-Day. The story is covered by The Telegraph, and so he perhaps may gain coverage in the British press when he goes.

Tom Pritchard, a New Zealand cricketer who played in England for most of his life, has died aged 100. He played for Warwickshire County Cricket Club from 1946-1955, and was the oldest living first class New Zealand cricketer. -
Bill Green, English footballer and manager, has died aged 66. He played for a variety of clubs including Hartlepool United (1969-1973), Carlisle United (1973-1976), West Ham United (1976-1978), Peterborough United (1978-1979), Chesterfield (1979-1983) and Doncaster Rovers (1983-1983). Nicholas Medforth-Mills, King Michael of Romania's grandson, has announced his engagement with the wedding expected in the Summer of 2018. Will he be sticking around for it? I doubt it.

Simon Barker, lead vocalist of British punk rock band Heavy Load, has died. Heavy Load were the subjects of a documentary film, and have been featured in profiles by both The Guardian and the BBC.

Gordon Williams, British author whose novel The Siege of Trencher's Farm was turned into the controversial film Straw Dogs, has died aged 83. His other work includes From Scenes Like These which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1969, as well as ghost authoring the autobiographies of footballers Bobby Moore and Terry Venables. Ed Sharockman, NFL player for the Minnesota Vikings (1961-1972), has died aged 77. He played in the Super Bowl of 1970, and is one of the last few original Vikings from the 1961 roster - the year they made their debut. Additionally, Jim Hargrove, NFL player for the Minnesota Vikings (1967-1970) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1971-1972), has died aged 72. He also featured in the Super Bowl of 1970. -
