Rumors floating around that Denis Kireev, one of the negotiators for Ukraine during the first round of talks, was detained by the Ukrainian security service as a traitor and has been killed. Apparently, there are pictures of his body floating around on Telegram, so he's likely dead, just a question of whether he was a traitor or not. This promises to get MUCH uglier if the reports are true. EDIT: Ukraine Pravda confirms: https://www.pravda.com.ua/rus/news/2022/03/5/7328458/ Gear up for things to get worse.

    Vladimir Putin

https://www.newsweek.com/russia-ukraine-putin-intentions-war-zelensky-1684887 I mean quite aside from the "please don't sanction us further we're very nice really" BS, the video of Putin speaking is interesting. Definitely the least put together I'm seen him in official videos - whether that's stress or illness, no clue.

More information about him: https://www.kyivpost.com/special/valeriy-chybineyev-hero-ukraine-soldier-wants-set-sniper-school-help-train-best.html Career soldier, but expect names like these to be the primary additions to this thread for a bit, tbh. And expect people the English media would have gone "who?" about 2 weeks ago to get QOs soon enough - wouldn't be surprised if he got one over the next day, tbh, especially depending on how much information comes out of Russia/Ukraine in the same period.

    The Ukraine Crisis

People fleeing Russia amidst reports that Putin's upcoming speech (should be given within the next few hours) will include a declaration of martial law in the country. Lawmakers in-country drafting a law that forces people arrested for protesting the invasion in Russia to be conscripted into the army to fight in Ukraine in a sick twist of things.

Notable Victims of the Russo-Ukrainian war

Honestly not sure where else to put this and since this is relevant... In the Ukraine Crisis thread I posted a video of Holocaust survivors cursing Putin while hiding in bunkers all over again. Here's a video with English subtitles, and I will warn that it's extremely tough to watch: Of the over 2500 people named Righteous Among the Nations from Ukraine, 17 are still living in the country, several in Kyiv: https://www.jpost.com/international/article-698462 Holocaust memorial charity From the Depths notes that they have lost contact with at least one of them: https://www.facebook.com/ftdepths/videos/456481162929767 From the Depths founder Jonny Daniels, a British-Israeli citizen, is in Ukraine in hopes of getting to them. I suspect that (and this may sound callous, but I'm being anything but) at least a few of them won't make it. The oldest of these individuals is Nina Bogrod, who is currently 97 and in Kyiv. I don't have a list of names for them, and it doesn't seem like any of them were "notable" enough in their post war lives to have individual Wikipedia pages. But should I be proven right and some do die as a result of the invasion, I fully expect that they'll be given significant posthumous attention by the press.

Notable Victims of the Russo-Ukrainian war

Not DL relevant, I should note, and it's a guy who seems to have been a career Russian soldier to have gotten to be Major General so I'm not all that upset, but here we go. Deputy commander of the 41st Combined Arms Army Andrey Sukhovetsky who has experience in several of Russia's "we swear we're not doing anything bad it's the West that's bad" wars.

Highly experienced General Major in the Russian Armed Forces killed in Ukraine. Not only is this is a major loss for the Russian Army, you have to imagine things become just a little more chaotic every time someone with actual experience in a war dies on the front.

Ukrainian born Russian oligarch found hanged in his Surrey mansion: https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/ukranian-born-oligarch-mikhail-watford-found-dead/ Does this have anything to do with the war? No clue. But an interesting coincidence nonetheless.

    The Ukraine Crisis

Should note that this guy seems to have been a pro=Russian mayor who tried to negotiate a surrender to the Russians. Per Twitter chatter, seems like nationalists killed him in revenge for what a good amount of Ukrainian commentators are calling treason and there's no small amount of celebration at his death.

Kherson seems to have fallen, becoming the first major city to fall. In other news on the "denazification of Ukraine," turns out Holocaust survivors have opinions as well: There's an English subtitle of the video in the replies, and even for someone who spends quite some time on this forum, it's difficult stuff to watch.

    The Ukraine Crisis

Based on everything Zelensky's been saying, his family is "in a safe place." There's a claim that there's a video out there of him saying something on the lines of 'I'm here, my family's here, we're just like you (the Ukrainian soldiers),' but I can't find a source on that. That said, I'm inclined to believe that as of now his family is still in the country, because the journalists would have sniffed out them fleeing by now. Now, would I call that the smartest move? No. But that's what I do believe to be the case. On a kind of related note: while Zelensky's courage cannot be denied, one of the biggest criticisms of him leading up to the invasion was that he couldn't see the big picture. To the moment Russia invaded, he continued to insist that there was no way that was happening and the West was panicking. Should something happen to him, there doesn't seem to be much provision for a Ukrainian government in exile at the moment. Per some of his videos, the top politicos are still in country, including the PM, and so is the only other elected pro-West head of state in Poroshenko. So, the question becomes, what happens if they are captured or killed? No one wants that to happen, but if you're the president, you need to have a plan in place for that happening. In the same way that he can't seem to plan for contingencies in political life, keeping his family in the country means he's not planning for contingencies personally either. It's the one really bad move he's made, IMO, and I'm really hoping this is not something people come to regret.

    Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Zelensky's just refused a US offer to fly him out of the country - the States say he's Russia's #1 target, so it does seem like: * Putin's willing to make a martyr out of him * he's planning on staying to the bloody end Whatever happens, he'll go down as a hero in the history books at this point.
