I submitted my hastily scribbled list. I've read the DDP Rules & Scoring a few times: before sharing it here, may I have confirmation that 20 *unique* picks aren't required? Good luck and Happy 2018 to all. Team Name: Scythe Matters 1. TBD *JOKER* 2. Fernando Ricksen 3. John McCain 4. Leah Bracknell 5. Rayya Elias 6. Tessa Jowell 7. Stefan Karl Stefansson 8. Clive James 9. Alberto Fujimori 10. Linda Nolan 11. John Hume 12. Leontyne Price 13. Shane MacGowan 14. Alison Lurie 15. George H.W. Bush 16. Jimmy Carter 17. Jill Gascoigne 18. Rosamunde Pilcher 19. Barbara Bush 20. Dennis Skinner Substitutes: A. Muriel Pavlow B. Philip Mountbatten (aka Prince Philip) C. Yasuhiro Nakasone ETA: Gah! I saw my error while away from the laptop on an afternoon stroll. I sent an email via the phone but it didn't sync up with my laptop's email client, so who knows if my 1st sub is in 1st place, or my requested replacement purportedly sent at 22h41m GMT 31 Dec 2017. Who needs drunkenness when one has ADHD?

Away from deathlist: Won (I think, 29 hours left to go) the $20 pay-to-play local dead pool, with a sixty-three point lead. Third time win, administratix giving up. Five out of ten. A BoingBoing unofficial dead pool: abandoned when the administrator requested his account to be anonymized. Leading with five stiffs from slate of ten and would win if this played out to tomorrow. Lost count of point totals. A Alt.obituaries dead pool: highest number of stiffs (14 out of 40) for personal best, ranking eighth out of over sixty is not personal best. I'd be higher if the Daily Doubles (two stiffs in a day: who plans for that?) didn't exist. I thank high-profile Canadian entertainers for making news of their ailments high-profile a well. B

I'm thankful for the multiple reminders. I had this contest on my radar and remembered the deadline but did I bookmark the URL or put its name on some tickler system or calendar? Noooo.

So How's Your 2018 Shortlist Looking?
Torva Messor replied to Joey Russ's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Thirteen new candidates so far. Was discussing list preparation with the lad (Dead Pool participation is one mother-son activity, he had a hit with baseball HOF Bobby Doerr yesterday) and we noted that the fun of research was the amateur exercise of style and personality in developing a list, e.g. stronger representation of wrestlers, musicians, composers, sports Hall of Famers, astronauts, depending on interest. He's learning what we know: there's a knack to balancing the (forgive me) "dead easy" with the specialty picks for competitive lists. When I see some online death pool standings tables in November with a few "Pointless" entrants (how Richard Osman and Alexander Armstrong would love them!), I wonder if their lists are mostly the 'Pope, Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth, the Bushs, the Carters, the "obvious" famous, and if they do any research at all,, or if they're stacking with high-risk but lucky so far candidates like international journalists, and Abu Bakr al-Baghdadii. -
La dee dee, one two three Voted for Mugabe A B C D E F G, Voted for Mugabe Is this wretched Mugabe, Doomed to die at ninety-three, to complete a string of three? We have nine more weeks to see!

Scott Putesky is a hit for me on two off-DL lists, one for ca$h, pending verifications from admins. But I am so far behind the person ranked immediately above me, not even Scott Putesky's passing will let me climb up the standings. I'm running to stay in place.

Going with the usual suspects isn't a successful strategy for mme. I have close to 3% chance of being correct and went with Doug Ellis, for no better reason than imaginary dice rolls for lengths of first name and surname. Although it's late enough in the year that Gord Downie could be the last DL hit for 2017.

I'll try again then. 1920 Roger Angell, Kate Murtagh 1921 King Michael of Romania, Muriel Pavlow 1922 Doris Day, Marty Allen 1923 Glynis Johns, Thomas Keating 1924 William Russell, Cicely Tyson 1925 Laurent de Brunhoff, Angela Lansbury 1926 Robert Clary, Gloria Jean 1927 Albert Uderzo, Phyllis Coates 1928 James Watson, Yvette Furneaux 1929 Alejandro Todorowsky, Shirley Ann Grau

Idiosyncratically I will remember Mr Hefner as a publisher. His daughter, Christie Hefner, was publisher for Playboy Enterprises and owned GAMES Magazine, a G-rated magazine of puzzles, entertainments and games I once subscribed to. His publishing company kept Jack Davis, Al Jaffee, Arnold Roth and Harvey Kurtzman fed and clothed for at least a few issues of the then innocuously-named Trump Magazine. Let the smaller-minded eulogize him in black and white.

Gentle corrections cheerfully accepted. First time caller: 1920 Roger Angell, Ken Nordine 1921 King Michael of Romania, Richard Wilbur 1922 Doris Day, Marty Allen 1923 Glynis Johns, Rose Marie 1924 William Russell, Cicely Tyson 1925 Laurent de Brunhoff, Arlene Dahl 1926 Robert Clary, Tony Bennett 1927 Doc Severinsen, Sidney Poitier 1928 Frank Borman, James Watson 1929 Mort Drucker, Ed Asner

Will 2017 Be a Bigger Year In Deaths Than 2016?
Torva Messor replied to Joey Russ's topic in Dead Pools
2017 has fewer days than 2016, so maybe not as big. Was that the kind of answer you had hoped for? -
At this rate, a logo of the Grim Reaper using a riding mower rather than a scythe would be more appropriate for DeathList.Net. I went with Lord Carrington. I am positive it will be somebody else though; pity that positivity happens only after pressing the 'Submit' button.

I am a Linux user (amd64, Mint 18.2, MATE, Gnome desktop). I don't have XFCE but I peeked at some advice online. I'm not promising anything other than a little time investigating, copying and pasting. What is your system configuration? Do the following terminal commands succeed at installing applications? gksu software-center gksu synaptic

Terrorists & Topical Terrorist Targets
Torva Messor replied to maryportfuncity's topic in DeathList Forum
It took "only" six weeks for major, "reliable" news outlets to publish as "claims" reports that al-Baghdadi indeed died. I wondered why reports Russia "may have" killed ABaB but couldn't confirm would be published, but that is the journalism "new normal." I'm grateful at least the Raqqa airstrike happened in the first half of 2017. At the current cumulative rate of outlets like Reuters reporting claims, confirmation of ABaB's demise could come as "early" as November 2017. Points are points!
