I was interested in Gorbachev's death. Nothing with Pele - I don't watch soccer (or futbol). Yes, I was interested in Loretta Lynn and Bacharach. I don't think being "American First" is the main factor. I think it's because of my lack of knowledge of British public figures. Never heard of Parkinson, Nigel Lawson, rolf Harris, Leslie Phillips, June Brown, etc. So I think I'm not interested when a British public figure dies because I never heard of them before finding this website Has an American public figure died that you never heard of before? Bacharach, Lynn, Lansbury, Jerry Lee Lewis, George Schultz, etc.? If so, did you care about their death even though you never heard of them before?

Genuine Question... As an American, whenever The Deathlist hits on a British person (or other nationality) I am quite emotionless. The only non-American hit that I was interested in was Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Other than that, I feel nothing when a non-American public figure dies. In contrast, when there is an American "hit" I pay a lot more attention to it and I might even get bummed out when learning of the passing. I was wondering if British folks on this forum feel a similar way whenever the Deathlist has an American "hit"?

    The 11th Death of 2023

I almost picked the random option of Dick Van Dyke, but I would be too upset with myself if Carter dies and I didn't pick him.

    Alan Arkin

I think it's time for an Alan Arkin thread. There's no info on his health, but he is getting up there in age. An absolute legend in America.

    1. Jimmy Carter

I wonder if Jimmy and his family are regretting the decision to start hospice care. Maybe his condition wasn't as severe as doctors initially thought. Or I think Jimmy was diagnosed with cancer and he elected to hospice care rather than seek treatment. I don't blame a 98-year-old that would rather die than seek treatment like chemo.

This is a very well-reasoned answer. I respect it, thank you.

    Ted Kaczynski

Did Pat Robertson say some not-so-nice things? Yes, plenty of times. However, the reaction to his death on this forum has been harsher than Kaczynski, who killed 3 people and injured about two dozen. Why is this?

    Rosalynn Carter

Honestly, every 95-year-old has some sort of memory problem and maybe some form of dementia. Therefore, I'm thinking her memory problems are severe enough to warrant being diagnosed and statement.

She's just confused because she thought Jimmy would be dead by now

My grandfather somehow managed to survive 4 months in hospice, so you never know. Carter might've been in hospice for a week or two already but the family put out the statement today because he has a day or two left. I remember John McCain's and Barbara Bush's family both put out a similar statement the day before they died.

    First Celebrity Death You Remember

The first celebrity death that I heard of that I felt sadness about was Ken Stabler (former Raiders QB) in 2015, because he was my Dad's favorite football player and he has a signed jersey from him.
