This 2000 NHS Scotland anti-smoking ad/Britney-esque music video is iconic. I've even seen a drag act using the song. -
As Popbitch have reminded readers, Al-Fayed was one of Max Clifford's clients, and he spoke about the man's...proclivities...on camera.

People I Was Surprised To Find Are Still Alive

I didn't know that populariser of ancient astronauts nonsense and convicted fraudster Erich von Däniken was still alive. Now 89 and very obitable. -
The National Portrait Gallery shared this fantastic photo of John Hemingway, last of The Few. It's dated this year, so he's at least still capable of getting dressed up and showing himself to the public.

93 year old Larry Silverstein pictured at an event for his new book about the 20 year rebuilding of the WTC site. Bit of a Kissinger look about him, but clearly not at death's door.

Has released a statement about suffering from a severe eye infection for months that has limited the sight in one eye.

I thought he was already dead, but that was DJ Casper. Getting my fat early 2000s rappers mixed up.

Really interesting selection of eras and regimes represented there. The 'État français' is Vichy France. The South African Republic was one of the independent Boer states that fought the British in the Boer Wars. The rentenmark and rentenpfennig were introduced in 1923 as a means of combating Weimar hyperinflation and replaced by the reichsmark only two years later. The one with the stylised crossed wheat(?) and 1924 looks familiar, but I can't find anything from a brief search. Has a Soviet feel to it. -
I recently learned that in 1958 Le Pen acted as a second in an unlikely duel between the 72 year old Chilean-American ballet impresario and choreographer George de Cuevas and 52 year old Russian-French retired ballet dancer and choreographer Serge Lifar. They fell out over changes Cuevas' production had made to a Lifar ballet. They fought in front of 50 photographers and a cut to Lifar's arm was the only injury. Le Pen was Cuevas' second.

A Crem classic, posting a Tweet with absolutely no context or comment. -
He used to claim he was of Swedish descent before embracing the German reality. Plus of course Scottish.

Same rationale for the bizarrely large number of people who write about 'Borris'? -

Enjoying the notion that it's the Labour government that's responsible for Crem's dad apparently being an abusive cunt to his son. Btw Crem, it's Farage. One R. -

Finding the opening ceremony distinctly underwhelming, with a side order of cringe. -

Schumer, Jeffries and Pelosi all telling him that he's doomed. Article also has a detailed account of him dithering around a Mexican restaurant prior to the covid diagnosis: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv2gj8314nqo Will his candidacy last the week?

Over 5 years 'Sleepy Joe' has gone from insult to reality. Fundamentally he's an octogenarian in a very physically and mentally demanding job. It's natural that he should feel the effects of that, and also natural that people question his fitness to continue doing it.

I wasn't elated on Friday morning, more quietly relieved. I think I was just glad it was finally all over. That's evolved into a sense of calm satisfaction that there appear to be reasonable adults in charge again. -

'Levelling up' phrase has been officially binned, a victory for grammar if nothing else. -
