    French Academician

Following the passing of Marc Fumaroli yesterday, I thought it was a good idea to start a new topic concerning the 40 French/frail academicians. To be honest, I was quite hesitant to make it as a game just like the oldest state leaders alive where everyone can choose a candidate between the remaining one, but maybe a simple topic about is enough ? Let me know if a game sounds interesting for you ! Anyway, I doubt those people are barely even famous outside of France (except for a few one) and, even here, there's some names which remains quite unknown ! Here are the 33 remaining academician alive after Fumaroli's death : - René de Obaldia (seat n°22) : 1918 - Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (seat n°16) : 1926 - Jean Denis Bredin (seat n°3) : 1929 - Hélène Carrère d'Encausse (seat n°14) : 1929 - Dominique Fernandez (seat n°25) : 1929 - François Cheng (seat n°34) : 1929 - Gabriel de Broglie (seat n°11) : 1931 - Pierre Nora (seat n°27) : 1931 - Pierre Rosenberg (seat n°23) : 1936 - Michael Edwards (seat n°31) : 1938 - Claude Dagens (seat n°1) : 1940 - Angelo Rinaldi (seat n°20) : 1940 - Jean Clair (seat n°39) : 1940 - Daniel Sallenave (seat n°30) : 1940 - Florence Delay (seat n°10) : 1941 - Jules Hoffman (seat n°7) : 1941 - Jean Marie Rouart (seat n°26) : 1943 - Frédéric Vitoux (seat n°15) : 1944 - Michel Zink (seat n°37) : 1945 - Jean-Luc Marion (seat n°4) : 1946 - Eric Orsenna (seat n°17) : 1947 - Patrick Grainville (seat n°9) : 1947 - Xavier Darcos (seat n°40) : 1947 - Barbara Cassin (seat n°36) : 1947 - Daniel Rondeau (seat n°8) : 1948 - Amin Maalouf (seat n°29) : 1949 - Alain Finkielkraut (seat n°21) : 1949 - Jean Christophe Ruffin (seat n°28) : 1952 - Danny Lafferière (seat n°2) : 1953 - Dominique Bona (seat n°33) : 1953 - Maurizio Serra (seat n°13) : 1954 - Marc Lambron (seat n°38) : 1957 - Andreï Makine (seat n°5) : 1957 There is actually 7 seats empty : - N°6 : following the death of Marc Fumaroli the 24th of June of 2020 - N°12 : following the death of Jean d'Ormesson the 5th of December of 2017 - N°18 : following the death of Michelle Serres the 1st of June of 2019 - N°19 : following the death of Jean-Loup Dabadie the 24th of May of 2020 - N°24 : following the death of Max Gallo the 18th of July of 2017 - N°32 : following the death of François Weyergens the 27th of May of 2019 - N°35 : following the death of Yves Pouliquen the 4th of February of 2020 Noted that there is actually 3 deaths of French academicians this year, the deadlier year for academicians is 2007 with 7 deaths. Plus the deaths of Dabadie and Fumaroli are exactly one month appart : could we expect another death on the 24th of July now ? So, now, who will be the next one to die ? Who will be the next one to join this frail assembly ?

    French Deathlist 2024

11th of June 2024 Hit n°12 "Tu m'admirais hier et je serai poussière, pour toujours demain" French icon, singer and model Françoise Hardy has died aged 80 on the 11th of June providing our French list with our thirteenth hit. Hardy was born in Paris in 1944 during a bomb alert. During her teenage years, she was drawn to music and began composing her first songs around 15 or 16 years old. In 1961, aged 17, Vogue hired her to produce a first solo album which should be a counterpart to Johnny Hallyday's music. Her first hit was ''Tous les Garçons et les Filles'' in 1962, sold over 500,000 copies in 6 months. In the meantime, Hardy met French photographer Jean Marie Périer who would ultimately introduce the young Françoise to fashion and make her one of the best-known ambassadors of French style and the face of a new generation of women. In the following years, Hardy composed and sang numerous hits and now classic French songs such as ''Comment te dire adieu ?'' (cover of Vera Lynn's ''It Hurts to Say Goodbye''), "L'amitié'', "La Maison où j'ai grandi"' or "Mon Amie la Rose" which now sounds like a poetic epitaph. In 1981, Hardy married another French iconic singer, Jacques Dutronc with whom she sang several songs and had a son, Thomas. She continued composing and singing melancholic songs till the end of her life and was ultimately considered one of the most talented and famous French singer-songwriters alongside such icons as Serge Gainsbourg, Véronique Sanson, Michel Berger and others… In 2004, she was first diagnosed with cancer of the lymphatic system which should eventually worsen in 2014 before being cured in 2016. However, in 2019, Hardy was diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer which should ultimately claim her life five years later. In the later years of her life and during all her health problems, Hardy made front-page news and was therefore a clear choice for our first common deathlist, jumping straight on at number 12 despite our common wish to avoid her being a hit this year…

    Thoughts On The 2024 List

Honestly, everyone’s talking about Carter and Chomsky but I can’t understand how Woodward is still with us. She should have been nº2 on the list also. I sense she can be a hit soon.

    French speaking deathlist

As one of the last actress alive of La Dolce Vita, Furneaux could. Genevieve Page played in Belle de Jour, Fanfan la tulipe, She played with Mitchum, Loren, Deneuve, for Billy Wilder and Luis Bunuel, I think She might get à Yahoo one. As for Judith Magre, She received 3 Molière but as she‘s mostly a theatre icon, I’m not sure…

    Derby Dead Pool 2024

As we all doing this… Daniel Baremboim : confused on this one, probably not as ill or frail as I thought he was so I’d say 20% of chances of him scoring Jimmy Carter, Joanne Woodward and Noam Chomsky : won’t reach 2025. 99% chances of hit there at least for two of them, and if two survive, I’d be amazed Roberta Flack : real ill for sometimes but I don’t think she’ll score this year. 30% Ron Jeremy : supposedly at the end, but is it just a coup to get him out of jail ? 60% Jose Maria Marin : personal favorite of mine and unique pick, hospitalized after a massive stroke last year at 92 but nothing since, I doubt he’ll he succesfull but who knows.. 50% chances Steve McMichael : see other posts, think it could be his year. 80% chances Esther Rantzen : doubt she’ll go the assisted suicide way as mentioned and doubt she’s at death door. 50% chances Ted Turner : as outlasted his prognosis after Lewy Body Dementia. But not his year I think yet, 30% Michael Tilson Thomas : don’t care much about him, I don’t know but I’d say 50% chances James Whale : see above, I’d say 30% of chances of going this year 8 hits already and I’d say taking everyone above 50% chances I could end up with 5 more. Jose Maria Marin, Ron Jeremy and Joane Woodward would probably make me reach top 10 but I doubt it

New picture of Marie Rose Tessier, France’s oldest woman, from a month ago. Doesn’t look bad at all. on the other side, her granddaughter revealed she was really sick with bronchites/pneumonia in march and was even put on oxygen but bounced back. Potential immortal here ?
