Weither it’s January or not, this doesn’t explain his pale, tired and thin look. Nor does his posture honestly…
-
Doesn’t look good to me : clearly thinner, really pale and look tired… could be a big miss this year
-
Most significant doesn’t mean most Important for you. Significant is in term of impact on culture, politic, society etc… I get that it’s interesting to compare each one point of views but I have to agree with Ulitzer on this one… maybe put your own personal significant death and then the significant death worldwide ? Anyway most significant worldwide : Sidney Poitier most significant in France : Gaspard Ulliel and Thierry Mugler

Heard of it, thought it was already reported here some times ago, it really moved the opinion out there in France ! The only one to care and call the emergency services was a homeless guy !
-
You just jinxed all the chances of Randon to reach 119 now, congrats !!
-
Where this ratio comes from ? at least she has reach 26 out of the 365 days in her way to 120. 339 days left. honestly I’m so fascinating about these wop records ! This may be quite controversial but I don’t want her to reach 120 because I want Randon to be wop at some point, she has been overshadowed by Tanaka despite being almost 118 and I think she deserves the title for a moment
-
What are the odds of Kanata’s reaching 120 yo ?
-
Hospitalized after a fall, didn’t know that ! Will be fine though I think
-
Congrats on this one ! A great man gone and a great point made ! Should I keep a scoreboard somewhere or is it useless ? anyway, new round opened, I’ll myself take Dorette Ardenne

De Obaldia gone means seat 22 is in vacancy now. There is now 6 seats empty : • N°3 following the death of Jean Denis Bredin (01/09/2021) • N°6 following the death of Marc Fumaroli two years ago • N°16 following the death of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (02/12/2020) • N°19 following the death of Jean-Loup Dabadie two years ago • N°22 following today's death of René de Obaldia • N°35 : following the death of Yves Pouliquen two years ago seats 12, 18, 24 and 32 were taken respectively by Chantal Thomas (author born 1945, elected in 2021), Mario Vargas Llosa (Peruvian author born 1936, elected in 2021), Francois Sureau (author and lawyer born 1957, elected in 2020) and Pascal Ory (historian and author born 1948, elected in 2020). Out of them, Vargas Llosa is the oldest and so the first one to go I think but there's many other ones who are frailer (Nora, Carrère d'encaisse, Fernandez, De Broglie…). Also, while I'm at it, I red in the Dictionnaire de la Mort (which I talked about here recently) some interesting things about academicians. Apparently, French author and adventurer Louis Antoine de Bougainville (wiki) wanted to be elected at the Académie and plaid for his election to Charles Pinot Duclos (wiki) who was at the time the perpetual secretary of the Academie. While stating that he was really sick and that he won't have long to live, Duclos sassily answered back that "the academie doesn't provide the last sacrament". Those kind of quip are so funny to me. On the contrary, when Pierre Laujon (wiki) wanted to be elected in the Academie, he did the same thing as Bougainville, stating to Jacques Delille (wiki) that he was dying and Delille answered "Hey ! Gentlemen, we all know where he's going to, let him make it through the academie first". He thus was elected and died 4 years later. Anyway, a sad loss with the passing of De Obaldia, I was just seing ads on the subway for his new play about his centenary last week. Who will be the next one ? feel free to bet (I should have opened a sweepstake for academicians damn…)

René de obaldia dead at 103 +1 for my french list

I predict the grim reaper is going to confound sceptics and be its most powerful yet like a super strong enema in 2024 moreso than recent years equalling or even beating 2020

Thierry Mugler, Gaspard Ulliel, Meat Loaf and Hardy Kruger gone in less than a week is not what I personably call quiet but… -
Would be surprised if he dies before Napolitano though

I’m 23 and I knew 3 of my 4 great grand parents on my mum’s side : two of them got to 97 and 95, the other one is still alive and was in wonderful shape till her 100 birthday approximately (could still walk by herself, had great memories, was really energic). All of them had wonderful memories about hiding Jews during the war which I heard of from my grandpa’s brother who told us about it this summer : It was so interesting and I’m kind of proud of my ancestors for that ! On my dad’s side, I knew 2 of my great grandparents one of them got to 99 so I think I have good genes
-
Wow 106 is a wonderful age ! Did he die at 106 ? the oldest person I know myself is my great grandmother who’s approaching 102 now but tbh she’s not as healthy as she used to be in the last two or so years : she has cancer on her cheek (don’t know which kind of cancer though) and the medical team don’t want to take the risk to operate her because it would requires a general anesthesia which, at that age, is quite risky… so we’ll see how it goes !
-
Your point was right. I didn’t say it was ok to post without looking. I just say that it doesn’t need to insult people. We’re all grown ups, we’re able to communicate without being that angry all the time, furthermore when people are new here ! A simple notice as Ulitzer did is quite sufficient I think but I didn’t want to upset you either !
-
Hum ? Honestly that’s no big deal ! You’re being more annoying than he is ! Stop being so rude, nobody died (yet)
-
Thierry mugler dead !!

Currently reading a wonderful book called "Dictionnaire de la Mort" (The Death Dictionnary) which lists anecdotes, fun facts and citations from all over the world and all periods. There's a whole chapter about centenarians and some interesting stories about the claimed oldest people. Besides the well-known story of Pierre Joubert (1701-1814) who was considered the oldest man ever for centuries before a further analysis in 1990 which revealed it was a father and his son with the same name, the book also talks about a man called Annibal Camoux (wiki) who was supposedly born in 1638 and died in 1759 in Marseilles, France. We can apparently see him in this painting from the well-known French painter Claude Joseph Vernet who painted this L'Entrée du Port de Marseille in 1754 : in the foreground on the left, a yellow-dressed-woman is introducing a man who was said (by the painter) to be Annibal Camoux. Apparently this case was well documented and a lot of people believed in this legend : Cardinal Belloy (wiki) who was 98 when he died came to visit the man on his deathbed and practiced the last sacrament apparently. Even though I don't think this is real, this case is interesting and his inclusion in such an historical painting is fun to me. If anyone cares to investigate (which I don't) here is a blog from a descendant of Annibal Camoux who gave a lecture in 2020 in Marseilles about him.

Is it health related ?
-
Yeah I understand ! This is my first pool ever so I take note of all of that and maybe next year I’ll come up with something more meaningful for everyone, let’s say it’s a beta version rn but hope people like the idea anyway

well, that was quick ! A hit for @gcreptile, @msc and @Book so not THAT many people actually… It means : 8 points each for msc and Book with 2 deaths in 2 days and you had to renew 2 picks on the same day + 10 for the 3 of you cause your pick dies the day you choose him = 11 for gcreptile and 19 for Book and msc, congrats that's a great score ! Yet you didn't manage to have a single point in 2 months of game All jokes aside, point taken, the thing is, death is unpredictable and for example Khaleda Zia or Sartzetakis were said to be on their deathbed some times ago so everyone jump on them but it turns out they're still here and have locked a place on our list for nothing. I might add a new rule to prevent those situations from happening too many times if I run the game for next year. Again, Louie Anderson wasn't supposed to die that quick honestly. But this is how it works and only 3 people managed to put him on their list in the end : you have to be able to choose one candidate before it's too late which means you have to have a hit (and therefor, a place to fill in) before the soon-to-pass celebrity does die. I wouldn't say it's opportunistic I'd say it's a bit of chance and a race against the clock. And this is absolutely why I began the game in November and not in January in order not to have obscure but dying people on here but rather obvious picks who might linger for years and thus block spot on your list. I already explained that but It only makes sense now I think. Anyway good job to you 3 !
-
all good for both of you ! Chilean way you're up 4 places just with one death : congrats !
-
Léonore Oyarzun is a solo hit for @chilean way which means 6 points : congrats ! please choose another one + @gcreptile you still have one candidate to choose thanks !
-
Russell Bishop dies : one point each for @WEP, @Toast, @Book, @msc, @wannamaker, @CaptainChorizo and I Only @wannamaker has to choose another candidate Congrats !
