I predict the grim reaper is going to confound sceptics and be its most powerful yet like a super strong enema in 2024 moreso than recent years equalling or even beating 2020

I’d say, Badinter and Malaurie were such big names out here that it makes february a « good » month overall, but I tend to agree that in terms of international fame, it’s quite dry… -

Of course I knew Lumley, Twiggy, Redgrave and Philips but couldn’t recognize them (except Lumley). Redgrave looks the frailest of them all…

Can someone explain who si who on the photo ? I Absolutely don’t know any of these women except Routledge whom I search prior to her addition to deathlist edit : no need to tell me who Camilla is in the picture though

I was sure he was already on the immortal list ! He for sure qualifies as @arghton sum up his illnesses a while ago : « Juhani Palmu (Have to mention him here. Diabetes, stroke, heart problems, history of smoking and drinking, stroke, heart attack, battled three different cancers plus now battling cancer, two near-fatal house fires that have resulted in him loosing all the fingers on one of his hands, one leg and multiple toes. The second fire put him into coma, he was critical in ICU and his heart stopped beating twice during a surgery. He's 77, must be some kind of a medical miracle) » since then near : fatal infection in April 2023 + pneumonia in october + now hospitalized. I personnaly consider him the King of immortals. The two house fire are just cherry on top

9 février 2024 Hit n°3 Death penalty inevitable Former minister of justice and renowned lawyer Robert Badinter has died aged 95 to provide our deathlist with a quick follow-up hit. Badinter was born in Paris in 1928 in a bourgeois family which exiled in Lyon during WWII. After having graduated from Law School in Paris in the early 1950's, he became a lawyer for almost thirty years, until 1981. Between 1974 and 1976 he defended Patrick Henry who was suspected of having killed an 8-year-old child : this marked the start of a period of activism against death penalty for Badinter. In 1981, Mitterrand appointed him minister of justice and after many heated debates, he succeeded in having the death penalty abolished in October of the same year. At this time, he was one of the most influential left wing politician and one of the most famous faces of french politics. He then became the president of the Conseil Constitutionnel between 1986 and 1995, before being succeeded by another of the candidates on our list, Roland Dumas. In his later years, he remained a senator until 2011 and was frequently interview on his view about current political affairs. He is survived by his wife, author and philosopher Elisabeth Badinter and his ex-wife and current 100 yo pick Anne Vernon. After a quiet month of January, things have seemed to accelerate as Badinter marks a welcomed third hit for our list in the space of a single week. He was selected this year at number 14 and died on the 80th anniversary of his father deportation during the Rue Sainte-Catherine roundup in 1943.

Badinter was picked by two teams including my french theme one. Waiting for an obit, I would be surprised if it doesn't happen

Yep, just got the breaking news notif… Quite unexpected he was still in and out talking on TV recently… A great mind, 3rd hit for our french deathlist

Robert Badinter dead aged 95. 3rd hit, obit to follow

If I’m not mistaking, several articles refer at thé celebration as the « 100th anniversary of Siphandone’s birth » which is a very odd phrasing. Wouldn’t be too surprised if he’s already dead and they announce it in some days

Biden must be at least 100, as he confused Macron with « Mitterrand from Germany »

5 février 2024 Hit n°2 The Great Expedition French explorer, anthropologist and geograph Jean Malaurie has died aged 101 and marks the second hit for our french common deathlist. Malaurie was born in Mainz, Germany in 1922 and studied at the Institute of Geography in Paris. He embarked for two French Antarctic Expedition in 1948 and 1949, the firsts of thirty-one expeditions between Groenland and Siberia. His 1955 book "Les Derniers Rois de Thulé" was traduced in more than 20 languages and rapidly became a reference about inuit people. He worked for a while between France and Russia, leading the first soviet-french expedition in Siberia in 1990. Defender of arctic minorities, he fought against globalization which he though was a risk for small cultures and diversity and even became a consultant for the United States, Danemark, Canada and Russia. Up until his death, he was also a UNESCO goodwill ambassador. His passing marks a significant loss, especially for deahtlist which now counts "only" seven centenarians. He was awarded the 9th spot this year and is the second hit of our list.

Jean Malaurie dead at 101. 2nd hit. Obit to come

That’s no protest but of course both would obit in UK so what’s the big deal of posting the obits there rather than in the DDP thread ?

What would be the misteries that you want to see solved before your death ? I can think of several : • The Sodder children's disappearance on Christmas Eve 1945 • What happened to Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès after having killed his wife and 4 children ? • What caused the death of the nine soviet hikers in the Ural Mountains in 1959 ? (the Dyatlov Pass incident) • Who killed 4 years old Gregory Villemin in 1984 ? • Was Jeanne Calment really 122 ? Both Dupont de Ligonnès and "le petit Gregory" are the most famous cold cases in France. Everybody basically knows what is their stories, don't know if this is known worldwide though. Feel free to share your favorite unsolved mysteries here.
