I'll give you that: he did indeed spinoff from those UK sitcoms. But what they brought to American TV was legendary...if I may use hyperbole.

I would say he's pretty well-known in America producing many famous, groundbreaking sitcoms of the 70s including All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons, etc.
