    Donald J Trump

What the last 24 hours has made me realise is that even if Trump's eventual death is from natural causes, the US has got an almighty problem on its hands. The fallout won't be as bad as if the assassination attempt had succeeded, but there are plenty of supporters who would strongly believe it was a CIA/Biden plot even if Trump had a stroke/heart attack live on air.

    Donald J Trump

Yes I think Trump (and equivalent populist movements in other countries) is the result of capitalism failing for a critical mass of the population, while at the same time the same population has been convinced (by capitalists) capitalism is not the reason for their hardship. What I think we're also seeing is the system going through what communism and the USSR went through in the 1980s: it can be argued that the Cold War featured two ideologies that were both extreme and destined to fail, it just so happened communism fell first. Now it's capitalism's turn to fall, but this will be even worse because so much of the world has come to depend on it. There's a reason why the saying "it's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism" exists.

From what's visible it looks too minor to be a live bullet, if it were I doubt he'd have got up straight after, even if a non-fatal hit.

    Jimmy Carr

Probably because in TV image matters a lot, and given he'd already had his teeth done by this point, Carr clearly cares about his image more than most. Also he had it done during covid, which was the best time for someone to try out cosmetic experiments given very few would see the immediate effects if it went wrong.

    Joe Biden

There is no way Biden is getting re-elected after last night's gaffes, and the probability of him being made to step aside as Democrat candidate must surely have rocketed.
  8. I recall saying that myself in the election thread live coverage, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone more prolific said it on TV somewhere as well. Either scandals on the job will arise, past dodgy behaviour/associations (like the one being reported now) will be uncovered, and/or once the current Gaza conflict is over they'll give up and move on.
  9. If you haven't already done your by-election bingo, get Shockat Adam on your list. It's transpired one of his campaign supporters has been charged with terrorism offences, which could put the MP in an untenable position if he knew about links should the supporter be found guilty: https://www.ft.com/content/4045bcd4-2ceb-4f1f-9a90-137c04148f7b "A supporter of the new independent MP for Leicester South was charged on Wednesday with terrorism offences, less than a week after Shockat Adam’s surprise defeat of Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth in a campaign focused heavily on the conflict in Gaza."
  10. This is a good parliament for animal representation. Jennie representing the dog population, while Speaker Lindsay Hoyle represents the jellyfish population.
  11. I also enjoyed her line about the importance of shadow cabinet meeting details not being leaked...in a shadow cabinet meeting leak.

    General Election 2024?

History shows the next Tory PM is likely to not even be in Parliament yet. Every PM who came to power via an election since 1997 entered Parliament via the election after the election that party last lost power in: -Blair became an MP in 1983 (as did Brown as it happens). -Cameron in 2001. -Starmer in 2015. Entering Parliament in an election after the one your party lost power in pretty much guarantees one had nothing to do with the previous government.

Only 18 votes in it, which might be the tightest yet in this election.

    General Election 2024?

Remember Reform being polled 13 in the exit poll? They only have 4 in comparison, with potentially one more to take it to 5, so this was definitely an overestimate.

    General Election 2024?

I do occasional campaign speaking in favour of voting reform. This election is going to be an absolute beauty in trying to sell the case for proportional representation.

    General Election 2024?

Maybe Farage will be a hot pick for the by-election bingo? (Though knowing him he'll call this an establishment stitch-up) https://x.com/AdamJSchwarz/status/1809052657929040354

Waveney Valley another Green gain from the Tories, giving them 3 seats (4 if they hold Brighton Pavillion).
