It is now beyond doubt that BOris is going to remain our Prime Minister for the forseeable future. You can celebrate or mourn that fact as you see fit !

It is interesting to note that Dominic Cummings is still self isolating 11 days after he got the symptoms of corona though ...

The Motion Picture Home has some interesting people inside, most notably DL forum regulars Ruthie Thompson and Glynis Johns, but also Helen Reddy and Joanne Linville. Will some of them fall to the 'rona?

I was randomly thinking about Glynis earlier this morning - hopefully she will survive but once it's in a home the majority of residents will get it sadly.

And with a Qualifying Obit, the DDP will have reached 100 hits in the 2nd fastest time yet, behind only 2016.

I think a Q/O will be unlikely unless he died with the Virus and he makes a roundup.

Yes, and the number of funerals here has increased by about 20% compared to usual implying more deaths than officially reported. But even given that, the outbreak is nowhere near European levels.  Bali, where most Chinese go (in their tens of thousands, including direct from Wuhan), has barely had any deaths.

Perhaps the seasonality helped- Whuan locked down just before I presume a rush for the Chinese New Year.

Small populations can give all sorts of surprising results from random chance, of course.

Incidentally, many bigger chinese tourism destinations than Hawaii, eg Indonesia, also seem to have been relatively spared. Maybe Chinese tourists' habits when abroad of mask-wearing etc may have helped limit spread?  Also, locals in the rest of the world may have been more cautious around Chinese tourists visiting than around businessmen who looked like them and had visited China.

That's not true. Jakarta is having a outbreak atm with suspicions it is covering up the numbers.

You can rank different countries in the world by cases per capita or deaths per capita on worldometer if you want to (being wary of drawing too many conclusions since there are significant differences in testing and reporting etc, of course). The USA is currently ranked 15th in the world in reported Covid deaths per capita. Based on the daily mortality figures it's in an earlier phase of the epidemic than many countries above it and of course it locked down later, so it may yet climb to a higher position; but there are worse places than 15th.

There are, as you might expect, major differences between states, however. If the worst affected state, New York State, were ranked as an individual country it would be 2nd only to San Marino in Covid deaths per capita; it seems to have been worse hit than even Spain or Italy overall.  Some other states have also been hit hard, such as New Jersey and Louisiana. Whereas the least affected states (Wyoming, West Virginia, Montana, Hawaii...) have barely been touched.

Hawail is a suprise being it is a popular tourist area and with strong links to Asia. Perhaps proof that much of the world's spread does come via Italy.

I didn't have internet at the time bar glances at the future Mrs msc's laptop. My memory is Reid was announced by the Beeb at the same time as Bergman.

NBC news from the day is pretty much obit, obit, obit (video linked below):

I didn't know who Bergman was in 2007 so his death would have passed me by. Reid was 100% in the morning I remember my parents telling me as i got up (through why i was up at 7 am being it was the summer holiday I don't know.)

I'm pretty sure the record is held by 30th July 2007, when 4 DDP hits for that day were announced: Ingmar Bergman, Micheangelol Antonioni, Ayatollah Meshkini and Bill Walsh were all announced during the day, as well as the deaths of Phil Drabble and Mike Reid which were announced on that day iirc despite being from the day before. Also not picked but Tam McGraw (notorious gangster) and Tom Snyder also were announced that day. There was 5 or 6 obits on the BBC front page alone.

PS Actor John Normington died on the 26th July but was announced 3 or 4 days later, I forget the exact day after 13 odd years. Anyhow, July 2007 was quite a big deadpooling month.

The only one of that day I remember is Mike Reid which had been announced overnight.

    He was 81/82.

I know it sometimes escapes us as we discuss a lot of people of such advanced ages, but the global life expectancy for a man is 70 years. In Togo where he was born it is 60, and in Paris where he died it is 82.

    Probably just natural causes.

It's just they has been a few notables Africans dying in France from the virus.
