Damn. This really, really sucks. I remember him being aboard Go For Wand in the 1990 Breeders Cup Distaff race, which was genuinely one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed in sports, Go For Wand's breakdown. (Romero himself suffered a fractured pelvis and several ribs in the fall.) I was 12 years old and it brought me to tears. It would have at any age, though. Sounds like a certain 2020 pick, if he makes it.

As someone who picked her in his contest for this year, looks like a wasted pick. Of course, anything can happen quickly, but she looks vibrant and nowhere near death.

Where did you see that, just curious? I was watching him as a possible pick for this year, but are you saying he's, like, as good of a pick as Kathleen Blanco would've been this year or perhaps someone like Harry Reid if he makes it to 2020?

This is a very obscure one, but perhaps U.S. sports fans will know this name: former MLB player and coach Bobby Wine! (As an all-field and no-hit SS, he won a Gold Glove in 1963, but his .215 career average is fourth-worst all-time for players with 2,500 or more AB's.) He'll turn 81 on Sept. 17. If he were to die, I'm guessing that the local media in Philadelphia and Atlanta would cover it, at the very least.

Damn, this sucks. Yeah, McClain was a good fullback in his day, which actually wasn't too long ago. I'm heavy into fantasy football myself. Had one draft so far and have 3 more within the next 8 days.

Eddie Money, who had a string of hits in the 70's and 80's and who is featured in a reality show with his family (wasn't sure if I should've posted here or in the Reality TV thread) was apparently diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer late last year, according to TMZ. It looks like the normal life expectancy for such a diagnosis is 6 months, so he's already outlived that. I'm sure he's getting the best care imaginable, but if he makes it to 2020, he seems like a great pick in pools next year. Well hey, I picked him in my draft with my friends specifically because I saw him mentioned here! You're right, if he does see 2020, he's a stone cold lead pipe lock for next year's pools.

Picked up on this from the Hollywood Possibilities thread, so hat tip to Sir Creep and alt obits guy for this. They were commenting on Ryan O'Neal, and I think he would make a lot of sense as a 2020 pick. He's 78 and has had a laundry list of health issues, some of which are mentioned in this LA Times article from June that I came across. It also features a picture of O'Neal and his son Patrick (a local sportscaster here in Southern California), and you can see that he's pretty frail. I don't think it became Stage 4 cancer until 2017. I believe she revealed she's been battling cancer (again) since 2013, but that it metastasized in 2017 and spread to her bones at that time.

Thanks for posting; that was a good watch. She's a wonderful lady, and it's going to suck big-time when she goes. Maybe she can pull a Valerie Harper and live for much longer than people expect.

Hall Of Fame linebacker Nick Buoniconti, perhaps most famous for his status as a member of the perfect 1972 Miami Dolphins team, has died at the age of 78. I definitely remember him from Inside The NFL as well, as I got more into the game in the 90's.

Former big league pitcher Scott Sanderson has died at the age of 62. He was 163-143 over the course of a long, solid career that began in 1978 and ended in 1996, putting up a 3.84 career ERA. He made the AL All-Star Team in 1991. I don't see any details or cause of death yet, but the Angels announced it on their Twitter feed.

In the interview clip I saw in the link, I don't know, he doesn't look like a dude about to die. Doesn't look as sickly as I would have expected. Maybe he will see 2020 after all.

Don Newcombe, the first pitcher in major league history to win Rookie Of The Year, a Cy Young Award, and an MVP Award (this feat has only been matched by Justin Verlander), died yesterday at the age of 92. EDIT: Sorry about that, folks: I see that this was talked about in the Baseball thread.

Former USMNT World Cup veteran Fernando Clavijo, who also coached in MLS, has died after a 5-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was 63.

Celine Dion looks extremely gaunt. She looks more than simply being thin. I know she's always denied anorexia rumors, but damned if I am not having Karen Carpenter flashbacks. Ms. Carpenter was 32 when she died and looked 52, at least. She looked like death. Celine is 50, but take a look at her...she looks like she could be in her late 60's. If it's not anorexia, maybe she's just sick. All I know is that she does not look like a healthy human being. And she has also had the stress of dealing with the deaths of her husband and brother in the recent past. Could be one to watch.

Didn't know where to put this, as I am a relatively new lurker and decided to make an account. My friends and I did our first death pool more than a couple of years ago, where the 4 of us picked just 2 celebrities each, and the contest was over when someone had their 2 picks die. We enjoyed it so much (the winner had Zsa Zsa Gabor and Billy Graham) that the 4 of us decided to have a more-encompassing 2019 Death Pool draft, with 8 categories and where you pick 2 celebrities for each category. We are from America (California, to be exact), so the choices were more US-centric, as we had a rule where at least 3 of us had to know who the celebrity was (hence, no Leah Bracknell or Fernando Ricksen). Our 8 categories were: 40 and Under, Foreign, Movies/TV, Music, Sports, Wrestling, Movies/TV/Music (the first Flex category), and another Flex category. We had a draft where the person with the first pick got to choose a person in the category of their choice, and then that person would get the 8th and final selection in that category; in the next category, the person that picked 1st and 8th would go 4th and 5th. Oh, and we also had a rule where you could have no more than four 90-and-overs on your roster, and no 100-year-olds. In any case, this was my team: Bam Margera, Demi Lovato (40 and Under) Prince Philip, Pope Benedict (Foreign) Valerie Harper, Sidney Poitier (Movies/TV) Little Richard, Tina Turner (Music) Steve Gleason, Chris Doleman (Sports) Mr. Wonderful Paul Orndorff, Howard Finkel (Wrestling) Cloris Leachman, Barbara Walters (Movies/TV/Music Flex) Harry Reid, Beth Chapman (Flex) In doing my research, I based a lot of it on this site and just reading the comments.
