    Thoughts On The 2024 List

I, too, think we will have a bunch of hits in a relatively short time as soon as the 4th hit is a reality. It could be like the drought of 2022, when the DL had only 4 hits on 29 August but would eventually end the year with 14. Or it could end up like 2011 did.

    FIFA World Cup Players

Johnny Rep was mentioned on Dutch TV yesterday. A TV presenter made a song about Rep and then a former football commentator (known for the commentary of this Bergkamp goal) mentioned Rep is "currently not in the best phase in his life and hasn't been for a while". All the money the song makes will go to Rep, too. And a yearly local cycling event that bears his name has announced there won't be a 2024 edition, instead focusing their attention on the 2025 edition.

    Time Added

He's 70 today, but Belgian football icon Eric Gerets (wiki) reveals he has been progressively declining since two years because he developed brain calcification due to a brain aneurysm he had twelve years ago. It gets more and more difficult to talk and he loses his balance often while walking. The article doesn't mention it, but it sounds like Fahr's syndrome. As a player he was captain of PSV when they won the European Cup, being the only Belgian to have won the European Cup as a player, and he was a starter in the Belgian NT that had two very good runs in the international competitions in the 1980's. As a manager he's best known for being one of only six managers to have won the league in at least four different countries.

Article has been taken down and another obituary has not shown up (yet), so I guess we're not playing this round yet.

    Winter Olympic Deaths

And a week later Netherlands's first Winter Olympic champion, Sjoukje Dijkstra, is now dead too, she was 82. She won gold in figure skating in 1964. Unique pick in the DDP. She died not even 3 months after the death of her close friend and fellow Dutch figure (and ice) skating icon Joan Haanappel.
